Starbucks Labeled "Slutbucks" By Christian Group Due To New Logo

Starbucks has trotted out a new logo on their coffee cups which has raised the ire of a Christian group known as "The Resistance," leading them to call for a boycott of the Seattle chain. As Think Progress explains, the logo was part of a campaign by the company to introduce a new roast that could compete with less expensive varieties of coffee.

This logo, pictured below, caused the Resistance to issue the following press release:

Starbucks has recently introduced a new version of their logo which features a topless mermaid with her legs spread, which has caused outrage from a nation wide Christian media watchdog organization. The Resistance, with has over 3000 members nationwide, is boycotting Starbucks across the country saying their new logo is inappropriate.

The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute, explains Mark Dice, founder of the group. Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves, Slutbucks.

It's a shame to see that most Christians today identify with the "religious" right's completely narrow view of moral values, namely sexuality, gay marrige, and abortion. They consider a nude body a sin if featured as a completely innocent logo on a coffee cup, but don't flinch at TV reports featuring nude Arabs being tortured at Abu Ghraib or blown to pieces as part of the "war on terror?" Here's a fact they like to ignore: The most mentioned topic in the Bible is the poor. Starbucks has improved by leaps and bounds in its fair trade practices and is now paying Ethiopian coffee farmers a living wage for their product, that sounds like something Jesus would do.

I believe that is their first logo, and is over 20 years old. If not, it's very much like that. I have a vintage package stored away to prove it. I'm glad to see a real mermaid back on the package.

It is their first logo and their store in Pike Place Market (their first store) never changed their sign so this logo has been in use (at least at that one store) continuously since the begining (well over 20 years, in fact about 30 years). I'm sure they anticipated all this "controversy" as this same controversy was the reason for the new logo (which I suppose people will now be calling the old logo) in the first place though I've never really seen what the problem is. It's not any more pornographic than a lot of classical works of art....in fact I think it is a classical work of art based on the original Little Mermaid story.
