Starbucks Labeled "Slutbucks" By Christian Group Due To New Logo

Starbucks has trotted out a new logo on their coffee cups which has raised the ire of a Christian group known as "The Resistance," leading them to call for a boycott of the Seattle chain. As Think Progress explains, the logo was part of a campaign by the company to introduce a new roast that could compete with less expensive varieties of coffee.

This logo, pictured below, caused the Resistance to issue the following press release:

Starbucks has recently introduced a new version of their logo which features a topless mermaid with her legs spread, which has caused outrage from a nation wide Christian media watchdog organization. The Resistance, with has over 3000 members nationwide, is boycotting Starbucks across the country saying their new logo is inappropriate.

The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute, explains Mark Dice, founder of the group. Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves, Slutbucks.

Great. The original cups were brought in for a promotion for a couple months. Then SBUX is going back to the green cups. When this happens, the cultists will no doubt take credit, even though it was planned from the beginning of the campaign.

A simplified logo was introduced, hiding the siren's breasts under waves of hair, and that in turn was cropped and enlarged so the split in the siren's tail would no longer show. The only indication now that the female icon is a sea creature is in the wavy lines, which originally were part of the representation of the two tails. And yes, although the image is that of a split-tailed sea creature, it is a siren. More specifically, it is a double-tailed siren, a baubo siren, which The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects points out, is "a cross between a mermaid and a sheila-na-gig" and is found as a decorative motif in many European CHURCHES. "Her suggestive pose, like that of the sheila-na-gig, referred to female sexual mysteries in particular."

You've nailed what should have been obvious--Anything that celebrates or reveres--even obliquely--the Power of Women, must be attacked! The whole patriarchal religious and political society we have built, demands it.

We are, in our own Puritanical way, as bad as the fundamentalist Moslems when it comes to how we treat Women. The really bizarre thing is that these same morons will drool over Fox News' latest "investigative news story" on prostitution, lap dancing, or Britney and Lindsey--liberally laced with photos and video of the offending body parts--while leading the charge against something like this.

BTW there was more to my post, at the begining but it got cut off. That logo is starbucks first, and was introduced cos of the pikes place coffee, pikes place being the boardwalk and fish market where starbucks first opened. I've been to that starbucks the original one, and it has ALWAYS used the original logo. that said the current logo is just a cropped and differently rendered version of the old one, so it's always been the same thing. so i don't understand why now all of a sudden it's taboo

The most obvious thing from the Starbucks logo is that right-winger Mark Dice needs some serious psychiatric help if he sees what he says he sees in that logo. Makes you wonder what his wife is like.

It isn't enough that these wingnuts attempt to go in or bedrooms to police, now no one is even safe to enjoy a cup of coffee unless the religious right approves of the source. Anybody remember when Proctor & Gamble got in trouble with xstians because of their old logo? It had like a quarter moon and three stars (something like that) and the xstians were in an uproar because they thought it was some devil symbol (something like that). P&G actually changed their logo (if I remember correctly; it was quite a while ago).

exactly... in fact it is very close if not spot on. The original logo was sanitized for those who see evil in all things.

I want to officially apologize for Starbucks as it is today. Many years ago, we used to stumble down from Capitol Hill in Seattle, to a tiny Pike Place Market hole in the wall for a cup of wonderful coffee at the original Starbucks. We would often muse to ourselves how wonderful it would be if they opened another a bit closer to home...

The moral... be careful of what you wish. I'm truly sorry.
