Starbucks Labeled "Slutbucks" By Christian Group Due To New Logo

Starbucks has trotted out a new logo on their coffee cups which has raised the ire of a Christian group known as "The Resistance," leading them to call for a boycott of the Seattle chain. As Think Progress explains, the logo was part of a campaign by the company to introduce a new roast that could compete with less expensive varieties of coffee.

This logo, pictured below, caused the Resistance to issue the following press release:

Starbucks has recently introduced a new version of their logo which features a topless mermaid with her legs spread, which has caused outrage from a nation wide Christian media watchdog organization. The Resistance, with has over 3000 members nationwide, is boycotting Starbucks across the country saying their new logo is inappropriate.

The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute, explains Mark Dice, founder of the group. Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves, Slutbucks.

So the religious group wives DIDN'T spread their legs? Does the coffee come with a shot of milk? The only thing this press release will do is to give Starbuck's a counterculture feel, instead of a corporate chain feel. Which will lead to increased sales. Starbucks probably concocted this whole thing to generate publicity and name recognition for a new product line. This logo is actually pretty hideous. Makes me wonder how the ad agency got this by management.

Nonetheless, this =is= their original logo. Next time you're up in Seattle, go to Pike Place Market where the original store is still located. It read: "Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices" and it was originally so campy that its nine-letter name was painted over nine square windows.

But facts are facts ... no matter what you do or say, someone out there is going to "be offended" and is going to therefore try their damndest to offend everyone else within earshot with their incessant self-righteous prattling.

Mermaids with two fishtails are strange. A mermaid is supposed to be a woman on top and a fish on the bottom, not a pair of fish on the bottom. And I must say, the logo is so explosively ugly that I have to welcome any objection raised to it for any reason and from any quarter.

ok, now we all know that these "christians" are far more likely to be familiar with the various positions prostitutes can take (including diapering, snorting meth, posing for male military porn, etc), but WTF? can a prostitute, even one trained at Cirque de Soleil, actually get into the position shown, even setting aside the argument that her tail(s) isn't (aren't) legs?

i can't address the morality, nor the graphic quality of the logo unless and until i see a photo of a prostitute in this position, with both legs arc-ing outward and around the sides, up to the head. please advise. Were her legs broken? how did she stay upright? were any mermaids and/or prostitutes harmed in the making of this logo? How much would a prostitute charge to get into this position? how long would she stay there? what, exactly, are the services available, seeing as her bits are inaccessible, and her hands are occupied and her legs are both broken, so she's likely to be in extreme pain?

i can agree with previous posters - no amount of boobies or bad drawings could make me gag down that awful coffee they serve there.

Starbucks isn't that racy. That photo is doctored. No breasts on the actual cup. It looks a little stupid but nothing pornographic. It looks like the mermaid is happy, not begging for a little seahorse, if you know what i mean.

It's actually an old logo not a new one. This was the original logo before the sanitized, vectorized corporatized version that is now all over the world. It depicts a mermaid ala ye old sea faring maps. Train of thought being Starbucks > Moby Dick > I Sailors.

And from a company that sells you $4 coffees, maybe a prostitute would be a better choice of imagery. Perhaps they can use the image of Mary Magdalene instead?
