WASHINGTON — With the racially tinged Democratic race drawing to an awkward close, Barack Obama and John McCain face the challenge of winning over "Hillary Democrats" _ the white, working-class voters who favored the former first lady over Obama's historic candidacy.

Obama and McCain clearly have set their sights on each other, a recognition of the long odds Clinton faces in trying to capture the Democratic presidential nomination. The McCain campaign figures some of her supporters might be up for grabs and won't necessarily vote Democratic in the general election in November.

"I've been saying for a year that you never count a Clinton out, but now people are laughing at me so I guess I've got to stop," McCain strategist Charlie Black said Friday. "But if you look at the blue-collar Democratic votes that Mrs. Clinton's been getting and then look at their opinions of Obama in these public polls, there's clearly an opportunity for McCain."

Clinton won more than two-thirds of the white voters without college degrees in the last three primaries _ Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana _ according to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks. When those Clinton supporters were asked who they would vote for in an Obama-McCain matchup, just fewer than half said they would support Obama. Three in 10 said they would vote for McCain and the rest said they wouldn't vote for either.

Shrugging off those numbers, Obama spokesman Bill Burton expressed confidence that Democratic voters will unite behind the nominee. He argued that the Illinois senator also would attract "droves of independent voters and disaffected Republicans that he has already won over all across the country."

Clinton is trying to use her advantage with white working-class voters to persuade party leaders to disregard Obama's overall advantage at the ballot and nominate her. Her campaign circulated a letter Friday from 16 members of Congress arguing she's the strongest candidate to have at the top of the ticket in the fall because she has won most rural and suburban congressional swing districts.

Clinton told USA Today in an article published Thursday that AP exit polls "found how Senator Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

"There's a pattern emerging here," she said.

Story continues below

Republican pollster Whit Ayres said that based on focus groups he has conducted in swing states, including Missouri, Michigan and Florida, Clinton's claim that she would do better than Obama with blue-collar white voters is believable.

He said those voters support her because of the prosperous economic times they experienced when her husband was president. He also said they are uncomfortable with Obama because of his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who created a furor with his divisive comments, and questions about Obama's patriotism.

"It's cultural," Ayres said.

The older those voters are, the more likely they are to support Clinton. Whites without college degrees under 30 support Obama, although to a lesser extent than the college educated.

In the general election, Democrats trying to attract white, working-class voters immediately start at a disadvantage. The party's presidential candidates have not won a majority of white voters in more than three decades, according to exit polls over the years. The only Democrat to come close was Bill Clinton, who lost to Bob Dole among whites by 3 percentage points in 1996 and to President George H.W. Bush by 1 point in 1992.

This year, whites who do not have college degrees lean slightly toward the GOP, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News survey conducted last month, with 43 percent calling themselves Republicans and 38 percent considering themselves Democrats.

Ruy Teixeira, author of "America's Forgotten Majority: Why the White Working Class Still Matters," said Democrats have a better chance of winning more votes from this demographic this year because of the troubled economy, the war in Iraq and rising health care costs and millions who remain uninsured.

"These are voters who haven't been doing too well throughout the whole Bush administration and now are really sort of beside themselves, don't have a lot of faith in the Republican brand of economic management," said Teixeira, a Democrat not supporting either Obama or Clinton. "The question is can McCain push other issues in such a way as to prevent the Democrats from taking advantage of their built-in advantage on the issues that are going to be current in this election."

Black said if McCain is to win over any "Hillary Democrats," he'll have to work for them and earn them, and he plans to do that.

"I think you'll see particularly his economic message and his health care message in very populous terms, and that he'll be talking to and meeting with people in that category," Black said. "A lot of these voters are conservative. A lot of them believe in a strong national defense."

They also believe in their guns, said strategist Mudcat Sanders, who advises Democrats on rural issues.

"He's got one thing he's got to do and he's got to say it clearly. He's got to say, `I'm not going to take anybody's gun,'" Sanders said. Obama has done that at times, such as when he was campaigning for Western voters. "It's not a litmus test. It shows you are in line with the culture."

Sanders said if Obama does that and spends time getting to know rural voters, he can win them over.

"He's got to embrace the culture is what he's got to do," Sanders said. "The boy's IQ looks like Pete Rose's liftime batting average. It's off the charts. But at the same token, that comes off to us as big city. The big city thing John Kerry never could shake, I think, is Obama's problem right now. But I think he can get those voters and lot more if he just gets out there among the people so they can get to know him."

I can't help noticing that Obama supporters, who are ever so sensitive about their candidate's name, feel free to twist, distort, and ridicule in any way possible the names of his opposing candidates, Hillary Clinton and John McCain, e.g., Billary, McSame, etc.

This is typical from the Obama camp. From day one, Obamaphiles have labeled any and all criticism of Obama as racist, while lashing out in the most degrading language available at Hillary Clinton and other candidates.

The only way these voters are up for grabs is if Hillary Clinton refuses to support the Democratic Nominee. If Clinton does such a move, she will be as relevant to the Democratic Party as Pat Buchanan is to the Republican Party today.

You are 100 % right. All of these polls and talking points are being raised when no one
has even taken a look at the issues. If McCain is elected say goodbye to Roe v. Wade.

The Washington Post has an interesting piece on women in WVa who are still campaigning for Hilary. They make a huge effort to participate in politics and hold up a sign for her and passersby taunt them. This is a terrible way to respond to people's grassrooots efforts. It can only make them bitter and turn them against Obama because of the actions of his supporters. There is too much of this kind of thing on the web as well.

The most important thing Obama supporters can do now is be nice to Clinton supporters. Respect them, talk to them about what they want in a future President. Enough calling people names or mocking their beliefs. Enough insulting people for having hope. Isn't Obama about avoiding negativity and reaching across the aisle to work with all Americans?

Remember, we need each other.

I agree with you on many levels.
However, many Hillary supporters take pointless stupidity to new and dangerous levels.
It is frustrating trying to reason with people who can look in your face and repeat a lie no matter how much proof or truth you provide.
There is a disconnect from reality that is Bushian and disturbing.
I'm not saying that a whole lot of my fellow Obama supporters aren't gloating jerks, but somewhere someone is going to have to find a way to sit these folks down and explain that gravity does exist, the earth does revolve around the sun, the earth is actually a slightly warped sphere, and that Hillary threw her campaign away with hubris, picking loyalty over competence too many times, managing her money badly, picking bad advisers, not dealing with reality early enough to do something about bad situations, allowing surrogates to use racist rhetoric, and alienate her most loyaly supporters for the votes of a few bigots who when it comes down to it will not vote for a woman when push comes to shove the same way they won't vote for a black man.

Her campaign stinks of race baiting and Bush thinking. She is the senator from my home state. I certainly gave her support and a chance. However, at every turn she proved that she was dumber and more disconnected from reality than anyone could have imagined. Bush dumb. Bush disconnected.

You are smart. Unfortunately other people on this blog are not. It's great to feel passionate about your candidate, but stop taking everything so personally and stop thinking that everyone who disagrees with you is stupid. And for heavens sake, stop calling people who did not vote for Obama racists because it is very insulting to be called a racist.

Thank you for your comments.I voted for Obama on the issues.I like Hilary's grit , but can't vote her politics.
However the ongoing hostility, sexist comments and general abuse against her and her supporters is somewhat shocking to me.The fact that very few to no Obama supporters blow a whistle on them speaks to me of mob mentality and makes me fearful for what would happen if he does get in the W.H.It's the Evangelicals all over agin!

Will criticism be stifled, will racism be leveled with every disagreemnt?Despite Obama being the presumptive nominee , the tauntings have not stopped. Instead I'm hearing calls for "punishment" and the blockage of Clinton supporters from govn't posts. It sounds like the Tom Delay regime. When you love your candidate so much you are willing to hurt his campaign, because thats what you're doing-
that's pathology.

Yeah BookQueen, now you want to make nice. I guess you want to kiss and make up now that Obama supporters and Republicans have ruined her career. GOOD LUCK.
There is a "Movement", (I know you guys like that word), to write in Hillary Clinton's name on the general election ballot if she is not the nominee. Wouldn't it be funny if she won after all of the Obamacans "return to the roost" instead of supporting him.

Average, hard working Americans of all types, take note:
- People in Illinois still have their guns. They hunt too. They hunt a lot.
- People in Illinois know that summer gas tax thing doesn't work. They tried it.
- Contrary to what you may have been told, Obama is not a Muslim.
- Contrary to what you may have been told, Obama is not a terrorist.
Just do a little research on both candidates actual voting records and include the state voting records also. Then compare what they say to what they have actually, truly done.

I'm a Hillary Democrat that will be voting McCain in the fall. No matter what the pundits tell you, we are real and we aren't "come back home" to Obama just because he is running under the banner of the Democratic party. If this is the leader of a party I've worked to get in office my whole adult life, then I wish Hillary would burn it to the ground on her way out. This is not the party I use to know. How can a man that got out debated in 22 debates on the issues be our nominee? He may be able to read a teleprompter or remember the talking points given to him by Axelrod but that has nothing to do with "leading" People need to wake up and see that this man is the Democratic version of George W Bush. Hell, he isn't even original enough to find a different slogan. Both promised to be "unifiers" David Axelrod is the new Karl Rove.

Sorry, hwebb54, but your must be a pathetic puffhead if you are going to vote for John McCain. Not only did he make the same moral mistake as Hillary Clinton in voting for the War on Iraq Resolution in 2002, he has recently compounded his mistake by saying we should stay in Iraq for the next hundred years (provided the Americans don't suffer any more casualties -- fat chance, Senator).

Anybody who votes for McCain is voting for four more years of Bush (without the integrity). McCain has sold his soul to the devil (continued tax cuts for the rich and a continued war on Iraq -- which had nothing to do with 9/11). John McCain is a rich, philandering fraud. Vote for him and lose your soul and your integrity.

It really is funny, how so many of you Hillary supporters have no problem spouting the subtly racist (yeah....I said it) implication that Obama, Columbia, Harvard Law Review, is really too stupid to think for himself, and is really only being fed talking points by a white man.

Why don't you be as honest as you were in the first few lines when you spoke of hoping Hillary burns the Party to the ground, and just admit that you, like many of your friends, are just a pissed-off bigot supporting another pissed- off bigot who lost huge despite her former president husband, her former president husband's name, her former president husband's political machine, and her former president husband's money.

Must be painful to admit, that Hillary has been so thoroughly rejected, despite her advantages, by a man who looks like he does, and has the name that he has. As for your never coming back home, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. It's about time the Democrats rid itself of the mental dinosours anyway. More Bushit, hwebb54. "You just can't make people like Obama. This is a genuine dislike that goes beyond party lines. I just wish she had the nerve to burn the party to the ground for the way they've treated her."

As Donald Rumsfeld would say, "Oh, goodness gracious."

Are you really the ignorant, bigoted dimwit that you appear to be? Are you against Obama because he's black or because he's against the war?

Hillary's had her chances in the primaries and Obama has beaten her, fair and square. You may cling to Hillary, because she's white, but not because she's "working class." She has led a privileged, middle-class life and has never had to "work" for anything. She's been "given" everything she's gotten. Whoever thinks our party hasn't been damaged by the way HRC has been treated by the Press and Sen. Obama himself, (giving her the finger in a childish manner), are fooling themselves. The fact that he could be nominated without the Democratic Base, meaning the Big Dem states seems wrong in the most basic sense. He has been nominated not by Dems, but by converted independents and Republicans. She is by far the choice of longtime Dems, but if he loses to McCain, his supporters will blame HRC, no doubt about that. There is an alternative to McCain, and I now am a believer in his message that we need a 3 Party System.

Monique,

As one woman to another, if you value your reproductive rights, then maybe you need to see what the National Organization for Women (who endorsed Clinton) and Planned Parenthood have to say about a vote for McCain, he is a very real threat:

http://www.ppaction.org/ppvotes/08_antichoicemccain.html

http://www.now.org/news/note/041008.html

If this isn't enough, here it is from his own campaign website, where he vows to nominate judges that will overturn Roe v. Wade (under the banner Human Dignity and the Sanctity of Life).

http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/95b18512-d5b6-456e-90a2-12028d71df58.htm

Not to mention all the federal judgeships that the Senate is holding up waiting for a democrat to take office that directly affect our civil rights.

Is not voting for a democrat really worth it because your candidate didn't win the primary?

Monique,
I don't believe that anyone is talking trash about HRC. And you might want to rethink the voting for McCain thing. If you are a Hillary supporter, one must assume that you support her on the issues. Voting for McCain would contradict that.
