Bill Kristol Predicts Obama Veep As...Dick Gephardt?

Nyp Gephradt

First Posted: 05/19/08 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:30 PM ET

Remember four years ago when the New York Post announced to the world that Dick Gephardt was going to be Kerry's pick for vice-president, except that it wasn't true, not one word of it, not even a syllable? Good times! And we were all reminded of those good times this morning on Fox News Sunday when the most genius man in punditry, William Kristol, confidentally predicted that Richard Gephardt would be Obama's vice-presidential pick. And it took Terry McAuliffe pronouncing Tim Russert's father - who is very much alive - dead and in heaven for my brain to to add a triple toe-loop to the quadruple axel spin that it did at this moment.

[WATCH.]

WALLACE: Who do you think he should pick or might pick?

LIASSON: I think he needs someone with foreign policy experience. By definition they'll be older than him. I think if you want to do the easy route, Ted Strickland probably will get you Ohio.

WALLACE: Governor of Ohio.

LIASSON: Which is a state that you really, really need. He doesn't have foreign policy experience. Ed Rendell.

WALLACE: Governor of Pennsylvania.

LIASSON: If they need him to get Pennsylvania I don't think that's not such a good thing for the Democrats. Sam Nunn I think would be great, but he's a little old.

WALLACE: I'll give you one name.

KRISTOL: Dick Gephardt.

WALLACE: Former congressman, Missouri.

KRISTOL: Former Democratic leader in the congress. Very attractive to working class Democrats.

WILLIAMS: Very nice, but old news.

Uhm, yeah. Very attractive to working class Democrats. Who powered Gephardt to the presidential nomination all of ZERO times.

Naturally, one has to allow for the possibility that Kristol is making a one-in-a-million prediction here. So, if he turns out to be correct, I promise to bake him an apple pie while wearing a prom dress on the roof of the Newseum.

I suspect it's wise to take anything Fox News says about Democratic affairs with a nugget of salt.
02:15 PM on 05/12/2008
Oh, please, let this be true! I can't wait to watch the white folks at Huffingtonpost go ape***t over this. Dick Gephardt?! Seriously?

You all have labored so long for your precious Ba-rock star; Dick Gephardt clearly doesn't fit the bill. The laughter will never end in my house if this turns out to be true. Wow, nothing like DIck Gephardt to burst the balloon of the Obama paramours running the media and left-wing blogosphere. But, then again, Gephardt does have about as much sex appeal as John McCain. Come on, can't you guys get Clooney on the ticket; then everything would be just dreamy for your picture perfect election.

Only someone who writes a response like this could believe anything Kristol says. Why don't you sit down with a nice book and try to educate yourself.
01:53 PM on 05/12/2008
Why even dignify Kristol with a discussion? The crazy old man on the subway platform probably has some VP guesses but you don't see me analyzing them.

1st choice is Chuck Hagel from Nebraska if he would accept it and my 2nd choice is Senator Webb.

Sorry but your partially correct. Bill Kristol bloviates that Obama will cross party lines and name Vito Fossella as his running mate. Kristol, as usual, is brilliant and ahead of the counter intuitive curve.

Right, and all the Democrats who worked so hard to get Obama where he is can just go to Hell.

I don't think so.

12:57 PM on 05/12/2008
Anyone other than a White Male for VP is a disaster!! Why do so many Democrats and Progressives act as if they are 'brain dead" when it comes to VP running mates. Forget Richardson, or the list of potential female VP choices. This nation is not ready for all of this change thing at one time. Take it slow.

Barack Obama should pick someone like Jim Webb or Wesley Clark. Based on some of the comments posted on this site it is clear to me why Democrats lose so many presidential elections.

MyNameIsJames,

Of course you have to understand that most of the bloggers here are just kids really. College age with high ideals and clear consciences.

Have you considered what a disaster Obama's campaign was predicted to be by just about everyone? Recently it seems predicting what our nation is not ready for has been pretty futile.

It's actually thinking like yours that has entrenched the Republicans. The failure to distinguish ourselves distinctly enough from the right has been a major downfall. After all the conventional wisdom has proven to be dead wrong on just about every major issue we have these last eight years.

In other words. Give me a change please.

You're so right! Obama didn't have a chance when this all began, and now look where we are. I think the best choice is Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas. If Obama/Hillary was a dream ticket, this is even better because Sebelius doesn't have nearly as much baggage as Hillary, AND she was elected to run a republican, mid-western state. Pretty impressive for a female democrat. The only knock on her is lack of foreign policy experience.

And on that note, what is all this talk about foreign policy experience? Does anyone actually know what foreign policy is? It is the US government's program to protect and advance American business interests abroad. That's it kids! I'm not saying it's an easy job, but it sure as hell isn't rocket science either.

I'm an older(?) white lady that agrees with James....take it slow. Those 15million-16million that did NOT vote for Barack might be pushed a little too far. I went to 2 different states (SC & PA) to Get Out the Vote. There's real animosity among registered Dems that aren't exactly as thrilled with Obama as I am. I agree with James, an older white male might make people easier with their decision when they vote for a Democrat instead of McCain. Don't get me wrong - I don't think the presidency should be based on race or gender, but apparently I'm not in the majority if you listen to the news much.

Has Kristol ever gotten anything right? Ever?

It boggles the mind that someone who is so consistently wrong still gets air time to spout forth more garbage.

Has he ever been right about anything? If so, what? No memeber of the Kristol family has ever been prescient, deliberate or foresighted. No conservative ever is with only single exception to prove the point. His intials were WFB.

Tiffany Shepherd is more qualified than Kathleen SEBELIUS (kansas governor)!
12:20 PM on 05/12/2008
ANYBODY but a token like SEBELIUS, bland, in-experienced, boring, !!!

Bloomberg is the MAN !
12:49 PM on 05/12/2008
Kathleen Sebelius is an "inexperienced TOKEN"?

Oh, I see, you must be a Republican who knows what's up and is terrified.

Kathleen Sebelius your so-called "the token" would bring Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Look up who she is. Oh, right you already did.

Your so-called "inexperienced token" erased a $1.1B inherited debt, is former chair of the national demcratic governors association, delivered the Dems rebuttal to W.'s SOTU, and then the very next day endorsed Senator Obama.

A pro-choice Catholic who is an elected official since 1986 who told the insurance lobbyists to stuff it, was re-elected by a landslide in Kansas, is popular among the very moderate Republicans Senator McSame would hope to appeal to, especially since Bob Barr will peel off conservatives.

Did I mention her Military Bill of Rights?

I've never been to Kansas, and had not heard of her until after the State of the Union and the Obama endorsement, and realized immediately the Barack Obama / Kathleen Sebelius ticket is amazing.

Republicans should be terrified.

As a former Kansas resident - I was proud to have voted for Gov. Sebelius on her first term as Governnor. I would have done so again for her second term except that I had moved to MD.

Kansas is a strange place, full of religious moral conservatives that have gotten screwed long and hard by the Republicans. They have gotten almost nothing on their moral / family values agenda from them, and have gotten screwed into the ground by the 'Vodoo Economics' of the Republican/Corporatist party.

Some of those 'moral' conservatives have started to wake up and NOT vote against their interests all the damned time. Sebelius could bring a subset of the moderate Republicans back into the Democrat party.

I personally think that Clark, Webb, or Richardson would be better choices as VP - but Sebelius would be a fantastic choice as well.

As much as the Obama Post hates this, Hillary has 16.6 million votes to Obam's 16.7 and as much as you would like to marginalize her, she has a lot of support. Live with it.

Not even Georgie can unite the RepugliCON party as fast and more efficiently
then Hillary.
That is the biggest single negative about her.
She will DRIVE THEM OUT IN DROVES in November for McSame.

I think we all can "LIVE WITH IT", the fact that there are two very qualified candidates
in the Dem primary, compared to up to 25% of the repug's not voting for McSame in
the ongoing primaries, where he is already the candidate.

Let's hope that whomever is the candidate we remember the Supreme Court configuration!
Do we really want more Alito's or Robert's??

Dick who ? This is ridiculous. Obama won't choose one of the white old guard. It's tiresome how the status quo acts like it's someone's turn to run for office, like in a monarcy when titles are passed down. Obama will pick a running mate that compliments his candidacy. ..new and fresh ...not a dinosaur.

Some people are incapable of learning. "Bill Kristol predicts" should have been a three-alarm warning.

Bill Kristol has been wrong (read: lying) about every "prediction" he's made about Iraq. This is the guy that thought it was psychobabble that the Sunni and Shi'i could not co-exist. Isn't he also the one that said we'd be greeted as liberators and the oil revenues would pay for the war?

So what happens to him? He goes to jail? Nope. He gets a job at the NYTimes. Un-be-f-ing-liev-able.

I thought that was crazy when I heard it, too. I tried to figure out WHY Kristol may have chosen Gephardt out of all the Dems available. Then it came to me: Gephardt is the palest, whitest guy Kristol could think of.

He was balancing the colors.
