Novak: Michelle Obama Nixed Hillary As VP

Conservative columnist Robert Novak alleges in a new column that Michelle Obama has nixed the idea of Hillary Clinton as a VP candidate:

Close-in supporters of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign are convinced he never will offer the vice presidential nomination to Sen. Hillary Clinton for one overriding reason: Michelle Obama.

The Democratic front-runner's wife did not comment on other rival candidates for the party's nomination, but she has been sniping at Clinton since last summer. According to Obama sources, those public utterances do not reveal the extent of her hostility.

But the Obama campaign brushed off the column in colorful terms:

[Barack Obama] dismissed it with a flit of his hand. He nearly didn't say anything, but then offered: "My wife does not talk to Bob Novak on a regular basis."

Communications director Robert Gibbs suggested afterward that the article should be set aside "in case of a toilet paper emergency."

I don't get Novak's appeal to anyone -- particularly the people who he works for. At least Coulter, Limbaugh and O'Reilly offer some pathetic amusement value. Novak is just wrong, stupid and dangerous. Anyone who "outs" an American spy with the excuse that "I thought it was old news" makes William Ayers look like a choir boy.

And I'm sorry, I don't want Novak's words so close to body parts that are precious to me and the Mrs. They're fit for litter box duty only.

It isn't much of a story when you boil it down. Of course Michelle has little positive to say about Hillary. It is pure conjecture for Novak to say that her attitude would be the reason Obama would reject Hillary. Novak doesn't like candidates for president who are different, for example he compared the Carter White House to the Snopes family in Faulkner's novel. Novak gets McCain, McCain thinks like Novak, so he's okay. Obama thinks on a higher plane than Novak, so Novak will oppose him.

It plays to those who are afraid of strong women, particularly black women, it is a blatant pander (if a journalist can do such a thing?) to the racist/sexist arm of the vote.

It is not much of a story if you are someone who thinks.

If you aren't, well.. there are a lot of them out there, you may notice.

decision = correct. Hillary on Barack's ticket does not help the way Barack on Hillary's ticket would have, and we really don't need another more competent VP undermining a wishy-washy president.

I cannot in my wildest dreams come up with anything as good as this and I tried. I played a medley of Novak's greatest hits in my head, starting with the Valerie Wilson leak and concluding with his angry walk-off-the-set during a CNN news show. I thought about Novak's resemblance to Klaus Kinski's "Nosferatu" and all the nasty, untrue things he has said about people I really like and respect..Still, suggesting an alternative use for his Michelle Obama 'scoop, and probably anything else that flows from his poison pen is the best solution..and probably good for the environment as well.

Two points. First is that everyone is giving this talk of HRC as the VP choice way more mind share than it deserves. It would be the wrong play, and Obama doesn't need his wife to tell him that.

Second. When it come to Michelle Obama speaking her mind, I suspect we are all just going to have to get use to it. She's a proud black woman and you tell them to shut up. Barack is just going to have to factor those brushfires into his plan :-)
