WASHINGTON — Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr launched a Libertarian Party presidential bid Monday, saying voters are hungry for an alternative to the status quo who would dramatically cut the federal government.

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.

"I've heard from Americans from all walks of life ... they want a choice," he said at a news conference in Washington. "They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us."

Barr first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

If he wins the White House, he said he would immediately freeze discretionary spending in Washington. He also would begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and consider slashing spending at federal agencies such as the departments of education and commerce _ as well as at overseas military bases.

The former U.S. attorney also said he would strictly enforce immigration laws.

"This notion that government owes something to people just because they're here does not resonate with me," he said. "This is not a charity."

Barr, 59, quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism. He has been particularly critical of President Bush over the war in Iraq and says the administration is ignoring constitutional protections on due process and privacy.

While in Congress, he was a persistent critic of President Clinton and was among the first to press for impeaching the former president. He helped manage House Republicans' impeachment case before the Senate.

He lost his seat to fellow Republican Rep. John Linder in 2002 after a redistricting. He then opened a lobbying and public affairs firm with offices in Atlanta and outside Washington.

The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, took less than 1 percent of the vote, placing fourth behind President Bush, Democrat John Kerry and Independent Ralph Nader.

You know what's really ironic? In 2002, Barr's Congressional district was merged with another, and he was put in the unique position of having to run against another Republican incumbent in a primary. Georgia has open primaries, and a whole bunch of Democrats voted in the Republican primary for Barr's opponent, because they were pissed at him because of his involvement in the Clinton impeachment. Barr lost, and the guy who beat him went on to vote in lockstep with what Bush wanted. Oy.

Is this the man who will rescue the Obama campaign? Obama will need someone since the Democrats haven't won a majority since President Carter's 50.1%.

Hey. He beats McWorse. Read the article again. If he gets good media, he could take votes from Obama too:

"If he wins the White House, he said he would immediately freeze discretionary spending in Washington. He also would begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and consider slashing spending at federal agencies such as the departments of education and commerce-as well as at overseas military bases.

The former U.S. attorney also said he would strictly enforce immigration laws."

Taking funding out of education and commerce kind of sucks, but he wants to freeze discretionary funding and bring the troops home.

Why not. Very interesting idea. And contribute to Ron Paul to disrupt the Republican convention, he already had Nevada suspend meetings as his group disrupted the McCain anointment..

Maybe he and Nader can form a unity ticket so Republican donors can get a little more bang for their buck.

He has come out strongly against Barr. Also so has Fox. They don't want Barr's message to get out, because it will take votes from McCain. Fox has accused Barr of working to put Obama in the White House.

Can't say yes. Bob Barr is a real mixed bag. One thing about him, he's not a hypocrite. He's consistent, he believes what he believes, and he doesn't pander. Kind of Ron Paul, but more conventional. He's actually all over the punditry, if you're interested. Probably some YouTube out there.

Well... there is that adultery and dumping his family stuff. But I suppose you mean about things like taxes & civil liberties. He's been true to those values, yes.

This news is very good for Obama. McCain stood to gain many of Ron Paul's voters by default until Barr gave them a new home. Also, Barr will give Obama cover to press some of the more civil-libertarian positions that (I hope) he holds.

If the Dems and Reps want to eliminate other parties why don't they just do it? They have the power. On the other hand good candidates can win against all opposition. Bad candidates need to limit the field. BO shall prevail. Notice how poll show that support for Nader is much less with BO running instead of HRC. BO is a much superior candidate to any body the Dems have run in 40 years. This is why he attracts Greens and other independents to his campaign. This is why he will win. Welcome Bob.

The more the better. As a Green supporting Obama I think that everyone who wants to run should run. Obama will still win. A good candidate has nothing to fear from the opposition. It is McCain that should fear because he is not a good candidate. BO supporters will concentrate on winning the election and we have nothing to fear from all candidates. Welcome Bob, Ralph and Cynthia to the race. McLoser is going down to defeat.

Tell that to Al Gore. With all those idiots on the ballot in 2000(Nader and Buchanon), the ballot got all messed up and helped contribute to Gore's defeat. Don't confuse the electorate or the people that make up the ballots with more than two candidates, they can't handle it.

It's amusing to me how quickly the very acknowledgment of there being "more than two horses in the race" is immediately dismissed as a portent of doom. Fact is, most Presidential elections in this country had more than two contenders ... and with good reason.

What we would otherwise have in this country is a non-race ... three hand-picked "so-called candidates" who are not candidates at all, coming at the tail of the most explicit and outrageous war-crimes and merely promising eight more years of the same no matter who "wins." That's not acceptable.

What this country needs, even more than a jar to the existing status-quo, is a firm reminder that this status-quo does not have to be; and should not be. Our country has suffered grievously at the hands of these men and women, in the White House, House, Senate and Court. We absolutely must not abdicate our responsibilities, as citizens, to be involved in what citizenship in this country requires of us.

Hey, I know that previous paragraph sounds a bit like what is normally accompanied by a fluttering flag and a nice patriotic hymn in the background ... but nevermind the media bit. It's true. We can't just wring our hands. Vote for whoever you like, but vote, and think. And when someone's dumping a wheelbarrow-load of you-know-what on you and saying "that's the way it is..." No. No, it's not.

Great comment.

There is nothing to fear from other players. You're right, we've heard all the statistics, all the collateral arguments and all the vitriol. The reason that this is so disturbing to some is the fact that they don't trust their fellow Americans any more than they trust our current Government.

Absolutely - we do have the power... we have the power of our vote and we have the power of how we spend our money. If one uses that money to further the same old addiction to "image Crack" as I like to call our collective lust for shiny toys and designer homes, while we're in a state of poverty because of our willingly accepting endless indebtedness as a way of life - then who's to blame.

It's time to take responsibility and wrestle back the power and freedoms that so many in history devoted their lives.

i think all of us Obama supporters should hold our nose and send $10.00 to Bob Barr . I understand he only has $57,000 in the bank. I see him taking as much as 15% to 20% of McCAIN voters. But we have to help him compete on the radio and TV. Remember, Barr is a very conservative Republican from Georgia, Anti-immigration ,anti federal involvement in health care, anti federal assistance to citizens,he will attract a lot of rednecks who would have otherwise voted McCain. This would be a reverse "operation chaos" it will boomerang right back in the faces of Limbaugh and Hannity. ITS A GREAT IDEA,LETS DO IT.

Let's be careful, if Hillary doesn't get her way, we may have a 4th party as well, wouldn't put it past her to try, she won't win, just screw it all up for her hopes of 2012.
