WASHINGTON — Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr launched a Libertarian Party presidential bid Monday, saying voters are hungry for an alternative to the status quo who would dramatically cut the federal government.

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.

"I've heard from Americans from all walks of life ... they want a choice," he said at a news conference in Washington. "They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us."

Barr first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

If he wins the White House, he said he would immediately freeze discretionary spending in Washington. He also would begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and consider slashing spending at federal agencies such as the departments of education and commerce _ as well as at overseas military bases.

The former U.S. attorney also said he would strictly enforce immigration laws.

"This notion that government owes something to people just because they're here does not resonate with me," he said. "This is not a charity."

Barr, 59, quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism. He has been particularly critical of President Bush over the war in Iraq and says the administration is ignoring constitutional protections on due process and privacy.

While in Congress, he was a persistent critic of President Clinton and was among the first to press for impeaching the former president. He helped manage House Republicans' impeachment case before the Senate.

He lost his seat to fellow Republican Rep. John Linder in 2002 after a redistricting. He then opened a lobbying and public affairs firm with offices in Atlanta and outside Washington.

The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, took less than 1 percent of the vote, placing fourth behind President Bush, Democrat John Kerry and Independent Ralph Nader.

Oh that is just great now we have a 4 way race, maybe even a 5 way race, McCain should be able to get 26 percent of the vote and win. Bush can still get 26 percent and win. Think about it.

Hillary could go maverick upon losing the nomination, or Bloomberg could jump in.

He could never win the nomination. "Libertarian" in the US does not mean libertarian. An American libertarian is an antiwar Republican.

Perhaps I'm missing something, everyone seems to think this would somehow help Obama? Here's my question -- how does it help Obama when Barr perhaps pulls in the same disgruntled republicans Obama is trying to win over?

A lot of "old boys" won't vote for a black man. Give them another choice besides McCain and Obama has a better chance. Very few Obama voters will switch to Barr because they like him more.

Face it Libertarian is the new bastion for conservatives, especially with Bob Barr as the candidate. I hope he takes away from the Republican base.

What good news. Conservatives can choose between McCain and Barr. Moderate Republicans can vote Obama along with all the Democrats. Sound like a big win for Obama in November!!!

bob barr is my hero. i am voting for obama, but this guy has been making more and more sense. he doesnt buy into the war in iraq or gwbush. he will siphon votes from mccain and i am glad for this.

i think he is doing to help obama and defeat the republican bs.

what can i say this is my opinion.

Your "hero"? Have you forgotten all the crap he pulled during his reign during the Clinton years? The man was a Republican through and through, and a staunchly conservative one at that. He was a part of that Trentt Lott, Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan crowd that at the time seemed like the craziest bunch of S.O.B.'s to ever pass through the Capital. But that was before an even CRAZIER bunch of Neo-Cons swpet into power and showed America what it TRULY meant to be a right-wing lunatic. Jerks like Tom Delay, Dennis Hassert, Rick Sanorum, and every single person connected to George W. Bush.

So my point is, while I certainly agree with everything you just said, and I hope he runs and is a spolier, the only line I would draw is to call Bob Barr "my hero".

this just in...

Clinton claims that Barr more qualified than Obama. Clinton supporters insist that if she is not handed the nomination, they will vote for Barr. "He's a better choice than Obama", they insisted.

Now back to you Bubba.

Almost is the key word but if you were going to give $150 to Obama, you wouldn't then give Obama $125, you would just have to set aside another $25 or less. Bringing your total to $175. I think it should probably be a one time thing too. I might do the same but I would wait to know how he fundraises. If he does poorly and is having severe monetary problems, I might just give him $25.
