WASHINGTON — Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr launched a Libertarian Party presidential bid Monday, saying voters are hungry for an alternative to the status quo who would dramatically cut the federal government.

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.

"I've heard from Americans from all walks of life ... they want a choice," he said at a news conference in Washington. "They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us."

Barr first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

If he wins the White House, he said he would immediately freeze discretionary spending in Washington. He also would begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and consider slashing spending at federal agencies such as the departments of education and commerce _ as well as at overseas military bases.

The former U.S. attorney also said he would strictly enforce immigration laws.

"This notion that government owes something to people just because they're here does not resonate with me," he said. "This is not a charity."

Barr, 59, quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism. He has been particularly critical of President Bush over the war in Iraq and says the administration is ignoring constitutional protections on due process and privacy.

While in Congress, he was a persistent critic of President Clinton and was among the first to press for impeaching the former president. He helped manage House Republicans' impeachment case before the Senate.

He lost his seat to fellow Republican Rep. John Linder in 2002 after a redistricting. He then opened a lobbying and public affairs firm with offices in Atlanta and outside Washington.

The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, took less than 1 percent of the vote, placing fourth behind President Bush, Democrat John Kerry and Independent Ralph Nader.

I'm confused - how do you run for nomination after almost all of the states have voted? Are there no other Libertarian candidates this year?

As an indie. The Libertarian Party has already positioned themselves previously on all the 50 states. The Ron Paul crowd will move that way and a smaller minority to split twixt Obama and McCain.

But let us be clear. Obama 08 n 12

No need to vote state by state. They can have a convention and put everyone who is interested in a medium size town hall. And that might only be half full...

Libertarians will select their presidential candidate at their National Convention in Denver at the end of this month.

Actually, Parties can nominate their candidates anyway they like. The Primary process that the Democrats and Republican's go through is voluntary. There's no law requiring it. In fact, the original purpose of party Conventions was to pick their nominee for the general election. There were no primaries.

That's why the stink about Florida and Michigan. Primaries are run by Parties and they make their own rules. Florida and Michigan agree to the rules then decided to thumb their nose at them. Now their whining about not being included.

So the Libertarians are doing it the old fashioned way. Hold a Party Convention and then pick your candidate to run in the general election.

The Republican and Democratic conventions are just week long pep ralies now since the real work of picking a candidate is done through the primaries ahead of time. But that's also why the Democratic convention is so potentially interesting this year because the primaries may no settle it before the convention.

This year, Barr will be the Nader-esque thorn in the GOP's derriere.

This is excellent news for Senator lying McSame who is always contradicting himself even when he is confronted by the media... always turning it around... "no, no, I did not say that..." etc. etc. He and Hillary Clinton are cousins in that arena. Both liars you can't trust. Bob Barr, though a despicable rascal, is fine to take on the McSame camp. Bob is not well liked, and in most cases hated by the Clinton machine and many GOP... Great news that he is running as a Liberterian! Hip, hip, horray.

Sweet. Yeah, Barr is one of the few guys out there with enough of a history of national exposure that could run Libertarian and actually pull a decent chunk of the GOP vote away. For a while I thought Ron Paul might go this route, but Barr is much more polarizing, so he's definitely the guy we want jerking McCain's chain from the right.

Great news!

Yes, this is excellent news for McCain. His entire lowlife pandering lying career just ended with a big fat thud. Like when his heart stops, which looks as if it is happening in slow motion right now. Even his wife's "connections" can't stop mother nature from destroying the mental capacity of this mother phuqua.

Well at least I have a choice now. And going to the booth should be a bit more fun. I have never voted Libertarian before.
