The Washington Post reports on another grim news event for Hillary Clinton: confirmation that her campaign is $20 million in debt.

With her campaign falling ever deeper into debt, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton spent a rainy Mother's Day seeking votes ahead of Tuesday's primary here, turning a deaf ear to calls for her to leave a Democratic presidential contest she has little hope of winning.

Clinton aides continued to insist that she will remain in the race even while confirming that she is $20 million in debt. "The voters are going to decide this," senior adviser Howard Wolfson said on "Fox News Sunday," acknowledging the $20 million figure. "There is no reason for her not to continue this process." Wolfson said he has seen "no evidence of her interest" in pursuing the second-place spot on the Democratic ticket, contrary to rumors that she is staying in the race to leverage a bid for the vice presidential nomination.

Campaign Chair Terry McAuliffe suggested
Clinton might lend her campaign more money:

Terry McAuliffe, the Clinton campaign chairman, told Tim Russert on "Meet the Press" that he spoke to Clinton about the possibility of contributing more money and "she said that she would be willing to do it." However, McAuliffe insists, "We haven't needed it."

I am grateful to the majority of Democrats that voted for Obama over Clinton. He has run a SUPERB campaign and has tens of millions on reserve, while she has bankrupt herself. He has a campaign manager that makes 12K a month while Clinton's is reported to make 242K a month. He hired talent that is devoted to the cause and not that which charged the most money. This is a sign of someone capable of taking us out of a 9 trillion dollar debt and restoring our credit in the world. Hillary would be a DISASTER when she can't run a 195 million dollar campaign without going broke.

Well said and true.
I have to laugh when Hillary supporters --you know, the ones who want to bomb Iran in order to support Israel ---claim she has more experience. Now that's true only if you're talking about sharing cookies with the wives of 80 international leaders.

Clinton to Obama:

Pay my debt or I'll make them put me on the ticket, and we'll both drown !

Hillary, please lend yourself up to the maximum allowed by the FEC and pay off all of your creditors. They cannot afford to carry your debts for you. We are in a recession, and is this what you want to leave businesses saddled with? You are being portrayed as a DEADBEAT. Your new money is going to ads instead of paying off old debts. Is this what America has to look forward to should you become President? It's disgraceful the way you cannot even manage your own campaign and yet you would ask us to trust you as President. PAY YOUR BILLS.

Give her time please for more insider trading (as in cattle futures) and more tax fraud (as in Peter Paul (---she has already been fined $34,000.00 but who's counting?)

Poor Howard Wolfson... He's so busy backing a losing candidate that he forgot that the reason they're 20 Million in debt is because of a poorly run campaign... And if that's the way Hillary would run the country, she's not our candidate. I just hope she doesn't still the poor creditors who advanced her credit for offices, banners, billboards, food, and stuff like that. I believe she could become a deadbeat and will pay the political price. So before she goes off ringing up any more debts, perhaps she should put some time into paying some of her bills. D.

Well, with access to (our) trillions, she can afford to hire better people. She is so much better with large amounts of money. With trillions, she can save us from ourselves, reverse global warming, save social security, bail everybody out of their mortgage, provide health care for the entire world and balance the budget ... we promise. Sorry, but a few hundred million simply isn't enough to defeat a "black" candidate that nobody likes and nobody voted for. It's just not real money.

Is that about right Hillbots?

Isn't this the definition of an addiction? Hillary needs a 12 step program to recovery. It's time for her fat cat donors to sit her down and have an intervention and tell that they have stopped throwing good money after bad, in case she hadn't noticed.

Wake up!! If she can't run a campaign without going into the red -- deep red -- then how can she claim she is better than Obama at "the hardest job in the land".

With a track record like her campaign, if she came into my office looking for a job, comparing them selves to another applicant (Obama) who has a perfectly run enterprise, I would be shocked @ the audacity.

As Donald Trump would say.......

She knows she is in debt yet, her power hungry personality would put her further in debt (with other peoples money) to keep a sinking ship going.

She never has to stay "in debt" she's got the cash to break even in August without another single donation. Its her money. If she wants to use her own finances because she believes in her campaign she totally has the right to.

Just like I have the right to donate to Obama's campaign and urge voters in the remaining states to show up for Obama and make their voices heard.

You are right when you say it is her money . .But she is loaning her campaign money. Her campaign could walk away from it's debt and declare bankruptcy and she could keep her money. I do not believe this will happen. I think she is gonna try and get the money from Barack, then she will keep her money even though she is the one who is responsible for the debt. I never liked Hillary (and still don't) but I do believe she cares about this country, no one throws 20 mil of their own money to a losing cause if they do not care. That said, I believe Barac should choose Ed Rendell for VP. We need PA in the general

As a man, I have to say that it feels like she's tarnishing the feminist image. How does it look when the first serious female candidate's campaign is $20MM in debt while her competitor has nearly $40MM in the bank? Fiscal responsibility anyone?

What's even crazier is that she is out there tearing down the guy who is going to have to bail her out financially. She is trying to create a situation where the only way Obama can shut down her race baiting campaign is to pay her hush money. Where I'm from, we call this extortion. Of course this is nothing new for this candidate. Remember when she tried to play the hostage game with the nomination -- first give me the nomination now and then I will release my tax returns later. And then at the last minute, she filed for an extension for the 2007 taxes so that we never got to see those. And the good news for all of us is that now we never will get to see them. Because she is through.

~~~ "Says Clinton Could Lend More Money" ~~~ ........
Oh for the love of God, WOW, come on ... really going in the wrong direction now, isn't it?
If this is the true then Hillary and Co.'s judgement really is getting totally unreasonable and irrational, not to mention on par with BushCo.
HillCo's campaign: No exit plan, rather keep digging an even a bigger hole of debt.
BushCo's Iraq: " "
Come on now peeps --- it's time for all of us to COME TOGETHER -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vAqekT-GuA as ONE united front, one party, with one candidate in preperation for GOP/McBush in November.
Hmmm ....
Yes, I now do see this person's comments (and attached link) below; I didn't notice or read it prior to me posting my other comments above.
Perhaps it is her 'exit' plan. Though, must say, if we knew for certain that is the case, I'm sure many people would be willng to financially contribute to help expedite the process .....
THIS is an interesting one - from respected business-website www.bloomberg.com:
"Clinton Deadline Looms for Recouping $11 Million Personal Loan"
By Jonathan D. Salant and Timothy J. Burger
May 12 (Bloomberg) -- Hillary Clinton may have a financial incentive to remain in the presidential race for a while. And she has Senator John McCain to thank for it.
Clinton loaned her struggling campaign $11 million in recent months. A little-known provision of a 2002 campaign- finance law cosponsored by McCain prevents candidates who drop out of the race from raising money after the nominating conventions to repay themselves for personal loans.
Should Clinton fail to come up with the funds by the Democratic convention in August, she'll be out the $11 million. If she quits the campaign before then, she may find it hard to get people to keep giving cash just so she can retire her debt.
That may ratchet up pressure on Clinton to cut a deal with rival Barack Obama to help her through his supporters. Obama may oblige since he would love to get her out of the race for the nomination so he could focus on the general election.
Now I understand why Hillary klings to the democratic nomination with such frantic fervor:
"It's the 11 mil. Dollars, stupid!"
Hillary must raise the money she needs to pay herself back by the convention, any shortfall after that is lost and she is prevented from raising money. She will still be running in August just so that her campaign can raise the money.
Ya but you don't stop the hemorrhaging of debt by creating more. Which keeps begging the question no one seems willing to ask the Clinton's, what are they going to do to Obama to render him unelectable?
This partner is dangerous as She is ready to bring with her in death the all party, as She would draw down with her the all country as she sees herself in the dig
This is not a courageous woman but a leader I would never follow in WAR bat ail because She would kill me for to save her image or because of her selfishness.
She continues to loan money - then She will ask or deal with Obama to pay back her campaign debt.
Hillary's attitude doesn't show a sign of roughness but a sign of craziness associated with a lack of responsibility.
Nevertheless her debt, aides acknowledged, has now reached 20 million dollars but She will continue to do anything for to destroy Obama, especially when She knows that She will not win…. It’s ugly – I blame her dotter with a mother like that whom cannot accept her defeat without destroying anyone on her road.
Is that the image of a first or a witch for the Democrats. If She dies, She wants us to die with her. It’s hard to love her, really hard to like a gender like her. She knows that Peoples would give her anything for to see her disappear out of the race. But as you guess Hillary doesn't care, not for the economy, not for the war and less for NAFTA.
How bad will it look if Obama has to pay the "little woman's" debt. I cringe. It's like an old 50's sitcom where the woman can't manage her money and the man has to bail her out.
It is my understanding that it is illegal for him to use campaign contributions he has already received to pay off her debts or pay her off directly. What he could do is have a series of fundraisers where the money is earmarked for such purpose. Perhaps a series of "unity rallies' with both candidates where HRC speaks first, endorses Barack and goes after McCain. Then Barack could come out and give his speech.
