I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Cynthia Nixon

The UK Mirror sat down with "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon, and she revealed she would marry her girlfriend Christine Marinoni, given the legal opportunity. The pair have been together since 2004.

"If it becomes legal I think we would," says Cynthia, who still lives in the Upper West Side neighbourhood where she was born. "It's something my girlfriend is interested in and it was not something my boyfriend ever was.

"I think that to get married to her would be a little act of rebellion. It's like if you've never had the vote and then you get it you're going to run out there and vote.

"I always avoided marriage in the past and was always very wary of it. I felt like it was potentially a trap. People sometimes want the party, the gifts and the public celebration of this big love - they're excited about that rather than about the lifetime commitment. So I always steered clear of it." Emmy-award winning Cynthia shocked everyone when she walked out on her partner of 15 years - English professor Danny Mozes - for Christine...

"I never felt like there was an unconscious part of me that woke up or came out of the closet. There wasn't a struggle or an attempt to suppress. I met this woman and I fell in love with her.

Read the whole Nixon interview here.

Most conservatives could care less about some issue unless there's money in it. Jena 6, Darfur, Tibet, Global Warming; issues without a financial impetus for them to act upon. I suspect so-called social conservatives just want to keep gays from getting married, because like all single people they are taxed at a higher rate (usually no children, no marriage deduction, and gays tend to have higher incomes). Taxation without (real) representation. And, of course, when gays die, quite often the state can swoop in and snatch their stuff.

Maybe gays should start holding those parades daily in DC until the law allows them to get married or God calls down another Katrina.

How would another hurricane make any difference to this issue? Patent nonsense or sheer stupidity?

It's sarcasm. lol. Hagee blamed Katrina on a gay parade, since there's no such thing as global warming.

Many gay couples have children, especially lesbians.

Hey if they are happy, who are we to say No? Its not my cup of tea, I prefer men myself, But I won't tell anyone they can't marry someone who makes them happy, its not my place nor anyone elses.

If this is directed at me, I am VERY female, a very straight, decent on the eyes, but taken (by her loving boyfriend), FEMALE. Having a niece who is gay, I would never disown her, nor tell her she can't marry the person who makes her happy. My family accepts the fact the world is a HUGE place, and there is room enough for all kinds of individuals. Ditto for my other relative who is gay, if that is what he was born to be, so be it. People have this idea that they can dictate how others live and so long as someone doesn't harm another, a child, what they choose to be, are born into, is irrelevant. This is a big world people, let's stop judging so much and try to go beyond bias.

Move to Massachusetts, it's been legal here for a while now. The world has yet to end, our divorce rate is the lowest in the country!

I've always found it interesting that the right talks about the sanctity of marriage as a way to prevent gays from marrying but allows easy quick legal divorce. They usually take advantage of that marriage loophole often like McCain and Reagan did.

And you are, what, prince or princess Charming? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Cynthia seems to be one of those rare people who sees beyond the surface to the inner, beautiful soul of her mate.

Care to snark about how many attractive STRAIGHT women are married to male warthogs?

Seems to me looks matter more to men than women. It's a gender thing more than a gender-preference thing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:19 PM on 05/12/2008

I resent your comment. The MAN whom I date, hopefully will marry, is a joe average, which suits me just fine. I have come to the belief, looks are not important in whom we choose as mates. Its what is inside a person, how they treat you, respect you, make you laugh, and feel, how they feel about themselves, how much harder they work on the job, to please me, proves they are the higher species. I am sure, Cynthia has similar feelings about her girlfriend. It is the person who sees beyond the outter wrapper that is evolved. Those who only see looks, miss the bigger picture.

Well good for her.

I am still trying to figure out why American lawmakers are basing their prejudice against gay people ON RELIGIOUS VALUES.

Since when does the U.S. take it's legal marching orders from a few loudmouthed homophobes?

Oh silly me, I forgot that republicans are still terrified of gays...unless they find them in bathrooms at airports or they work in Congress.

I"m just appalled at the homophobic reaction to gays in this country. Why are so many people frightened of gay people???

It's because we are still shackled by the Puritan ethic. At least people aren't being burned at the stake as witches anymore, but there is a long way to go.

I was once in a coffee shop in Amsterdam when a Dutch guy remarked that Americans are so progressive on everything except sex and drugs and I gave the Puritan response. He said, "Oh yeah, those nutcases. They came here after leaving England and we kicked them out, that's why they went to No. America. Thank God we did or we would be just as messed up."

Look at the divorce rate in this hypocritical country of ours.

It's a good excuse to hate those who disagree with you. Many Conservatives would support a civil union. My wife and I have one and wonder why gays don't feel that is good enough for them. For many in the US marriage is a holy union. They feel it would be devalued by allowing anyone to get married. In a democracy we all have to live with laws we don't neccessarily believe. That's a responsibility we should be able to shoulder without denigrating others.

The point is NOT civil unions, which despite the rhetoric does not guarantee one all the rights given to legally married people.

A lot of states won't even allow civil unions. BUT why is it such a horrendous step to believe many gay people are indeed religious?

IF they want to get married and consider themselves to want to out of personal AND religious beliefs why should it be so upsetting to so many?

Religious beliefs notwithstanding, it still doesn't answer why ANYONE else should give a damn about who gets married.

And what is this crap about DEVALUED? Gays getting married doesn't devalue MY marriage and if it's the reason then it's a pretty damned stupid reason to deny marriage to gays. The comment about "anyone" is really nothing more than prejudice.

ANYONE should be allowed marriage so long as they are of the legal age and have the ability TO CONSENT to marriage between them.

I have no problem with polygamy either. I do have a problem with secrecy and believe THAT should not be allowed as has been shown in the recent cases of very young girls being FORCED to get married.

OTHER than that, who gives a damn about who is married to whom? Some religious nutjob should NOT be allowed to dictate who can and cannot get married AND if their marriage is so shaky that gays getting married will undermine theirs' then they have a whole lot more problems than gays being married.

Holy Union? What gives? Plain and simple it is a contract in law. It is a feeble attempt to assure that one's worldly assets are transferred to ones genetic offspring. The only reason religion eneters into it is that it makes money for the churches.

Yeah, notice how well it worked out for Melissa Etheridge after a baby, etc. Self involved, shallow, and silly people who want to promote their flavor of the moment. I don't people should have to hide in the closet, but all she is doing is giving the GOPers more ammo to turn out the base. Can't we just live our lives in private?

THAT is a ridiculous statement. To use any "hollywood marriage" as an example and say "see! it doesn't work!" is ludicrous. There are so many screwed up straight marriages and there will probably be just as many screwed up gay marriages; percentage wise. You are talking about uber-twits and spoiled brats. Hollywood people don't get married, they just go steady. The same will probably apply to Hollywood gays.

Make sure marriage is between two PEOPLE and just leave everyone alone. That's the only solution to this whole argument.

Marriage is like Christmas or Disneyland--it basically exists for children. That so many people divorce or do not have children is peripheral to the main intent of marriage. Children need, crave, desire, and expect both the maternal and paternal lines. I am divorced but when both my husband and I are long dead in our graves and nobody remembers what we were mad about, those lines will be available for our descendents to explore. Gays having children are basically selfish. Given what we know about anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, they are the ones who need to explain why we need to throw away thousands of years of human behavior that acknowledges the importance of both mothers and fathers in favor of the obliteration of one of those lines. Screw the Bible. A great case against gay marriage is made using information from the above-mentioned areas of knowledge. Society has an obligation to promote those institutions best suited for the benefit of its young.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:21 PM on 05/12/2008

Do you even KNOW any gay or lesbian couples with kids? If so, are their kids distinguishable from kids of straight couples?

But I'm guessing you DO know a good number of STRAIGHT couples with kids, and a good number of DIVORCED couples with kids. Are any of THOSE parents selfish?

Your last sentence is right on, ironically. The institution is marriage. Why deny it to two people willing to sign up?

Kids want love and stable, safe, home environments. Plenty of STRAIGHT homes are war zones churning out messed up kids. Anthopopyscholophically speaking, of course.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 PM on 05/12/2008

Then why don't you push for outlawing single people having children? You're a bigot. Deal with it, and stop trying to turn us into a 3rd world country. Gay people have been here since the beginning of time. It's natural, it's normal. Gays and lesbians need to be protected, and they deserve the same rights as every other American. It's none of your fucking business. End of discussion.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:52 AM on 05/13/2008

By your own argument you should ban divorce. It is just as easy to say divorced people having children are basically selfish. How is it any different for a gay person to have a child and a divorced person to have a child? They are still both single parents. I guess that makes you just as selfish as it does for a gay person to have a child.
