Obama Hamas

For a long while, presidential contender Barack Obama had to contend with a whispering campaign that suggested he might be some sort of Islamic fanatic. You know! It was all a part of his parents' master plan to destroy America by giving their son a middle name that would come to be shared by an Iraqi dictator that no one had even heard of at the time of Barack's birth! After a while, Obama got shot of that mess and was accepted as a Christian. But then! It turned out that his preacher had said three or four things that people found objectionable, and it turned out that said preacher enjoyed all the attention he got more than he did serving his faith, so Obama had to labor to get shot of that controversy. Well, it's been a few weeks since the nation has pointedly moved on from that matter, so I guess it's time for the pendulum to swing back to the Obama-as-secret-Muslim argument.

Stepping up to fill that void is Edward Luttwak, a military strategist who apparently feels like he's got the background to start expounding on religious doctrines he's not familiar with in the New York Times. According to Luttwak, Obama's a Muslim and there's nothing he or anyone can do about it:

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother's Christian background is irrelevant.

Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him.

In other words, nuts to Obama's professed personal choice in faith! The only thing that keeps Obama from being a Muslim is the peculiar semantic trickery of "most Americans'" understanding.

Luttwak takes pains to say, "That an Obama presidency would cause such complications in our dealings with the Islamic world is not likely to be a major factor with American voters, and the implication is not that it should be." And that would be sufficient, I suppose, were it not for the great lengths he goes to in presenting these "complications" as things that sound like they might be a "major factor with American voters."

At the very least, that would complicate the security planning of state visits by President Obama to Muslim countries, because the very act of protecting him would be sinful for Islamic security guards. More broadly, most citizens of the Islamic world would be horrified by the fact of Senator Obama's conversion to Christianity once it became widely known -- as it would, no doubt, should he win the White House. This would compromise the ability of governments in Muslim nations to cooperate with the United States in the fight against terrorism, as well as American efforts to export democracy and human rights abroad.

Allow me to translate from the original Luttwak: "I only have a faint idea what I'm talking about. But you voters should be really, really concerned. Just don't tell anyone it was me who suggested this!"

Of course, Luttwak's chiefest concern is also the most inane one:

With few exceptions, the jurists of all Sunni and Shiite schools prescribe execution for all adults who leave the faith not under duress; the recommended punishment is beheading at the hands of a cleric, although in recent years there have been both stonings and hangings.

So there you have it. If Obama is elected, we will have to break with tradition and undertake the unprecedented step of ensuring he is not beheaded, stoned, or hanged by Islamic clerics.

For a long while, presidential contender Barack Obama had to contend with a whispering campaign that suggested he might be some sort of Islamic fanatic. You know! It was all a part of his parents' m...

Are diapers standard issue at the "Center for Strategic and International Studies"? Seriously, how do these Nancies live with themselves? Grow some stones Edward Luttwak. Get an f--ing clue. There is not a Muslim under every rock waiting to behead you.

These neo-cons really do suck at math. The VAST MAJORITY of practicing Muslims are peaceful and law abiding. It's the religious nut cases, the "devout", the fundamentalists of all faiths that should be singled out and worried over. They are, in all cases, in the single digit percentage. The tail does not wag the dog. It never does.

Keep this in mind: Fervent religion is for the weak and the aimless. The truly enlightened and educated among us keep our religious beliefs where they belong, where they do the most good... IN PRIVATE.

Jason is right, this Luttwak fool knows little about this subject. He is another noise maker whipping up fear for profit.

One of the STRONGEST men of our time, FDR, crippled with polio, helpless to walk or defend himself, stated it best:

"WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR, BUT FEAR ITSELF"

With that, we can only laugh at frightened opportunists like Edward Luttwak.

I was a little taken aback by that article when I saw it in the NYTimes, yes, but this is the least substantive counter-argument I've ever read. You say that the guy who wrote it doesn't know what he's talking about and present NO EVIDENCE except that you can't cite a degree he has in the subject.

What makes you think what he is saying is unfounded or wrong? I know this site isn't fact-based but is here to whip up storms of ignorant shouts but read the freaking article and then decide if you think it's just a plain smear or maybe if the author has an interesting point (though not one that we should consider in a voting booth).

I just don't see any argument against it, only smarmy arrogance.

The argument is that the article is based on somewhat anectodal assertions. To have any validity we have to assume that Islamic Law in ever present and rules over people even if they do not ascribe to the ideology. If you are not a Muslim how can you be subject to Islamic Law? Lutwakk's whole argument is based on the baseless assumption that even though Obama is not a Muslim he is subject to Islamic law because of who his father was. It's a ridiculous notion and the point (you seem to revere) is invalid. The evidence you seek is right in front of you. It's simple really, Christans are not bound by Islamic Law, it doesn't matter who your daddy is.

Ummm...maybe you want to go ask a MUSLIM if that is the way they feel. They would consider him to have been born a muslim.

Most of those who really believe that he is a Muslim are a part of the 27% who think that George W. Bush is doing a great job as President. Trying to rationalize with these people will cause medical complications. Let them live in their unfortunate, twisted view of reality.

The length and breath that people will go to to prevent this man's presidency is amazing. He would stand a better chance if he were an ADULTERER. Look at how many of them are re-elected and not a word is spoken we just accept it. Shame on us.

Do you really think it to be legitimate to wonder if Obama is a Muslim and a Marxist because some of his family he barely knows in Africa are? Would it be legitimate to ask if some african american kid in a Orlando suburb is a gang member because his cousins (whom he may have seen twice in his whole life) are affiliated with gangs in Detroit? I want to understand you sir. Please tell me how your question would be legitimate.

Wow. I never thought I should consider Muslim laws or culture in the middle east when voting for a U.S. President.

I can't believe anyone would print this kind of crap. I know one newspaper I will never consider subscribing to.

I was standing in line to hear Barack Obama speak a while ago and some of the others in line were asking, "Is Obama a Muslim like everyone is saying?"
This kid next to me, who was 11 year old said, "Why does it matter what religion he is?"
The knowledge of youth. It shouldn't matter.

Let him be Christian (as he is), or Muslim, or Jewish...or an atheist. I just want him to be a good president.
And he will.

ROFLMAO

Complicate visits to Muslim countries???

What a joke.

Is the pentagon paying this guy to write this article???

It sounds like it is full of military intelligence - and we all know military and intelligence are opposites.

This is another example of a military "has been" that disgraces the service he once represented.

Sad that the pentagon would become involved in politics - they cannot keep the military together as it is.

Eddie is a sad little man with a sad little mind writting for a sad little paper.

Get ready for more crap like this.

Remember Christian Amanpour? Her father was supposedly an Iranian muslim. Yet I never saw an attempt by Khatami (who picked her to interview him) try to behead her. Or anybody in Iran clamoring to arrest and execute her...

It is a fact (little reported but a fact nonetheless) Are you saying Odinga is not Obama's first cousin? Are saying they do not communicate on a regular basis?

Who knows? Who cares? Who says he did? What business of yours is it how Dick Morris makes a living? Shouldn't you be more concerned about HRC claiming she will recreate OPEC by waving her magic Disney/Halliburton wand over the Middle East, than what happens in Kenya, a country I can almost guarantee you couldn't even find on a map? When do you people stop floating in the vast pool of illusion and delusion, and show some concern about the self-destructive course of this country? Instead of spreading stupid rumors about who's a Muslim, why not educate some of these illiterates that live and work near you? Are you really more concerned with old political races in Kenya, as opposed to the US Presidential race? I may really have to move to Iceland now.....

Now I know the NYT has in recent weeks tried to pass itself off as "The National Enquirer" tabloid spewing trash......beginning with it's story about John McCain's supposed affair with a lobbyist, which summarily went nowhere....Now this person, who nobody really knows...spewing total nonsense, about Sen. Obama. For the NYT to even consider printing this sort of trash...is quite insulting...because this is not news, or even newsworthy....this was written as an op-ed....just this author's warped opinion....that the NYT seems to agree with since they decided to put it in their newspaper.....Now it is not surprising that since the paper is supporting Sen. Clinton....no editing of smear is required....since Obama is well on his way to securing the Democratic nomination, they still have to fling boomerangs, that ,as boomerangs go.....return to the one who flung it........

This is so ridiculous it is not funny. I am completely aware that Barack is a Christian. My beef is that if he chose to be a Muslim so what? Who cares? Are we saying that all Muslims (especially American Muslims) are terrorists? The last time I checked Americans had the right to choose their religion. One of the benefits of this type of propaganda is that most Americans are pushing back on this type of ignorance and they are DEMANDING real answers to the things that truly affect us as Americans i.e. war, economy, healthcare, recession, our stance on foreign policy, changing our image in the world, etc.
