***UPDATE TUESDAY, MAY 13***

China Earthquake:
The AP is reporting today on another major school collapse triggered by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck China Monday. This collapse has buried an additional 1,000 students and teachers. AP also reports that Chinese authorities have raised the death toll to nearly 12,000 and say that over 18,000 are missing.

Chinese state media is reporting that another 1,000 students and teachers are dead or missing after a massive earthquake crushed a high school.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that the school collapsed in Beichuan county, just east of the epicenter of Monday's 7.9-magnitude earthquake.

Florida Wildfires: CNN reports that Gov. Charlie Crist has declared a state of emergency in Florida:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency Monday as wildfires fed by drought conditions threatened homes and businesses and forced the closing of part of Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

Seven to 10 structures, including some homes, have been destroyed by the largest of the fires, said Yvonne Martinez of the Palm Bay Fire Department.

"The fire situation has been very unpredictable," she said. "The winds have basically caused what fires we had yesterday to jump a half a mile at a time."

Burma Cyclone: HuffPost contributor Hanna Ingber Win reported that local corruption was hampering recovery efforts in Burma:

In the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis in Burma in which 1.5 million people are at risk of dying from disease, local government officials in Rangoon have been selling aid and bribing residents in order to turn a profit, according to sources in Rangoon. It has been eight days since Cyclone Nargis wiped out entire villages along the Irrawaddy delta and left Rangoon in shambles, but the ruling junta has prevented relief efforts from barely making a dent in the recovery process.

Government officials have stolen donations of rice, cooking oil and diesel and sold them on the black market, a businessman in Rangoon said on Sunday. In several townships around the major city, the government announced that it would provide a certain amount of rice and cooking oil to each household, but local township officers were found refusing families their quotas and instead selling the goods on the black market.

US Tornadoes: The AP reported that 22 people were killed in tornadoes that swept across the central U.S.:

More than a third of the 22 people killed by a tornado that smashed parts of Oklahoma and Missouri over the weekend died in cars, troubling experts who say vehicles are one of the worst places to be during a twister.

"It's like taking a handful of Matchbox cars and rolling them across the kitchen floor," said Sgt. Dan Bracker of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, surveying the damage in and around Seneca, near the Oklahoma line, the hardest hit area. "This is devastating."

Among those killed were three people in Oklahoma who were rushing to reach a relative's house in their car; a woman whose car was blown off a road near Seneca; and four family members _ Rick Rountree, his wife, his 13-year-old son, and his mother-in-law _ who were in a van on the way to a friend's wedding when a twister packing winds of 170 mph struck the Seneca area on Saturday night.

You can come together as one as a species. From afar, your world glistens like a beautiful blue jewel in the heavens, one planet, but not one as a species. Until you can free yourselves from the grip of greed and power over one another, your species and your world will continue to suffer as it has never suffered before. The real storm you face is within yourselves. Without quelling that pain and coming together as one species to heal your one world you will not succeed. Your world as you know it and need it to feel to support life, is rapidly coming to an end. There is still little time for you to change on a worldwide scale that has never been attempted in your history. Change to heal yourselves and your world. Act now. You do not have much time left before the damage you have done cannot be reversed. The universe is watching.

soundfury, for some reason your reply to me is missing a reply button, so I will reply to
your reply here. We have no problem with in coming news here, it's free press unless
it's about Japan's past, but even that is improving. I'm sorry that you feel that in
America there is much that is not reported in your msm. You however own a computer
and can check out sources in other countries, I feel sorry for the rest of your misinformed
citizens.

Thank you. It is unfortunate that the masses drink the media kool-aide, and don't go further to get the truth. The media is the powerful tool of corporations who want to control public opinion and government. It's true, the truth is always out there. My point was just that we are in many ways in the same boat as those countries, except that here, they want us to believe that the mainstream media is unbiased.

If you can think for yourself after reading or watching something that's fine.
If not that's sad. I use resources just for the opinion of others. It doesn't
mean that I'm obligated to agree with them and often I don't. Why is it that
Americans are often too lazy to form their own opinions?
It can't always be blamed on lack of education.

After a posting gets about 3 replies, the subsequent comments on that thread lack "reply" links. They apparently started doing this yesterday. I'm going to contact Huffington and let them know that I disapprove of this. I suggest others do the same. It's kind of a backhanded impediment to our right to say what we think and carry on a meaningful dialog with each other. It's kind of like the moderators are telling us how long we're allowed to talk about a particular topic or idea. It's un-American.

18,00 buried, 3629 confirmed dead in quake hit city of Mianyang. This will take weeks
before an official total of the dead can be counted. Don't expect the truth, remember
China has to keep it's image for the Olympic Games and thousands of reported dead
citizens, is not so great for the propaganda machine. Saving face is important. Losing
face is suicidal.

This is terrible.

That's sure to cut into Hillary's illegal Chinese fundraising.

I'd like to agree with you, but unfortunately this is the dumbest comment of the month:

"Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

That was un-called for. You can Blame the United States of America and Corporations for this, not Hillary Clinton, but remember her husband signed NAFTA, George Bush put it on Steroids. Biggest mistake in U.S. History, giving another Country your Power to Manufacture Goods. Big Mistake. Thanks to all of the U.S. Government Officials that did this, you were really looking out for America's Interest and the American People weren't you. There used to be a time in this Country where we took pride in the quality of goods we sold, now we have given our quality away to another Country, that gives us the poor quality back. Their greed and easy access to filling one's pockets with money, has made America at its worst.

Thank you for maintaining our so-called Standards.

12,000 dead, 18,000 missing.

Maybe we can get back about 30,000 of those manufacturing jobs that the big corporations out-sourced.

Very sad situation, but why do you say the earth is angry--that's a human emotion. The earth is being the natural object that it is--it doesn't follow our rules or care where we build our houses. These are natural disasters, but like every story covered on this site, there is some hyped-up false emotion attached to it.

It's just an analogy, a figure of speech. Just imagine if nature were endowed with emotion? Thank God, it's not, we have enough problems as it is.

The story broke yesterday with no casualties reported. Hours later there are thousands
buried under rubble and my latest BBC e-mail says the total of dead now stands at
11,900. Don't expect the truth from either China or Burma any time soon. How about
Russia and their military strength parade?
Are we in fact going backwards to go forward of forward to go backwards?
It's hard to tell.

Why are we always so quick to judge the sins of our neighbors. Is our media giving us all the facts? Is our government being honest with us?

Until we realize that we must change, can we expect our neighbors to do it first? The yardstick we use to measure their progress is based on our own inadequacy.

The blind trying to lead the blind.

"We are the ones gone wild, and He's just allowing for the laws of nature to be executed."

McCain's favorite pastor (Hagee) proclaimed that "He allowed for the laws of nature to be executed" with Katrina, to stop the gay pride parade. So, pray tell, who are "the ones gone wild" causing God to execute all these recent laws of nature? Aren't all the homosexuals in these parts of the world all "hiding in the closets" to seek shelter from the storms of society & GOD?

It must be the "terrorists" causing God to go medieval. Are the Chinese still "terrorists"?

Stay safe, healthy and happy,
Love, Loretta

If we're going to anthropomorphize the planet, I guess we might as well imbue it with our basest traits. Perhaps the tectonic plates are ENVIOUS of our position of planetary dominion. Could it be that the oceans are GREEDY and wish to occupy more of the total surface area of the earth? Maybe the weather is JEALOUS that Linday Lohan and Brittney Spears get more press than it does.

I can't help but suspect that we've been listening to the clergy too much. They would tell you, without blinking, that the omniscient Author of the Universe is petty, capricious, vengeful ... all sorts of nonsense ... and never even pause to question their own blasphemy.

Where does this lead us?

All these disasters were predicted in the Bible, if only people knew how to read those spaces between the words. The Koran and the Bhagvad Gita missed these entirely, proving once again that the Christian God is the real God, and the others are just imposters. In fact it is the Christian God doing all this to punish gays. Any straight people getting killed are just collateral damage.

All over the world, authoritarians, whether Burma's self-styled "socialists" or America's self-styled "free market capitalists," see the plight and needs of people as an excuse to tighten the reigns of power (authority) and extort ever more profit.

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney see the soaring gas prices as a "desirable outcome," shaking twice as much money from American pockets for the same gallon of gas is the goal of "good" oil company marketing and production strategies. (Just as Enron overloaded transmission grids, shut down production at some power plants for "maintenance," and did everything in their power to make electricity scarce, and thus more valuable... and costly.)

In Bush-Republican's case, while blasting Democrats for "tax and spending," they are far worse. They use BACK DOOR TAXES, printing double the money which makes the $100 in an American consumer's pocket worth half as much, on top of war, usurious credit rules, soaring heatlh care costs, and other means to take every last dime out of American pockets.

During the slave era, presidential mansions from Mount Vernon to Monticello to the Hermitage agree: slaves were issued two shirts, two pair of pants, one pair of shoes, and one jacket... per year.

THAT IS the Right-Wing agenda - extort as much labor from workers, and pay them barely enough to keep them alive.
