Angry Earth

***UPDATE TUESDAY, MAY 13***

China Earthquake:
The AP is reporting today on another major school collapse triggered by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck China Monday. This collapse has buried an additional 1,000 students and teachers. AP also reports that Chinese authorities have raised the death toll to nearly 12,000 and say that over 18,000 are missing.

Chinese state media is reporting that another 1,000 students and teachers are dead or missing after a massive earthquake crushed a high school.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that the school collapsed in Beichuan county, just east of the epicenter of Monday's 7.9-magnitude earthquake.

Florida Wildfires: CNN reports that Gov. Charlie Crist has declared a state of emergency in Florida:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency Monday as wildfires fed by drought conditions threatened homes and businesses and forced the closing of part of Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

Seven to 10 structures, including some homes, have been destroyed by the largest of the fires, said Yvonne Martinez of the Palm Bay Fire Department.

"The fire situation has been very unpredictable," she said. "The winds have basically caused what fires we had yesterday to jump a half a mile at a time."

Burma Cyclone: HuffPost contributor Hanna Ingber Win reported that local corruption was hampering recovery efforts in Burma:

In the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis in Burma in which 1.5 million people are at risk of dying from disease, local government officials in Rangoon have been selling aid and bribing residents in order to turn a profit, according to sources in Rangoon. It has been eight days since Cyclone Nargis wiped out entire villages along the Irrawaddy delta and left Rangoon in shambles, but the ruling junta has prevented relief efforts from barely making a dent in the recovery process.

Government officials have stolen donations of rice, cooking oil and diesel and sold them on the black market, a businessman in Rangoon said on Sunday. In several townships around the major city, the government announced that it would provide a certain amount of rice and cooking oil to each household, but local township officers were found refusing families their quotas and instead selling the goods on the black market.

US Tornadoes: The AP reported that 22 people were killed in tornadoes that swept across the central U.S.:

More than a third of the 22 people killed by a tornado that smashed parts of Oklahoma and Missouri over the weekend died in cars, troubling experts who say vehicles are one of the worst places to be during a twister.

"It's like taking a handful of Matchbox cars and rolling them across the kitchen floor," said Sgt. Dan Bracker of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, surveying the damage in and around Seneca, near the Oklahoma line, the hardest hit area. "This is devastating."

Among those killed were three people in Oklahoma who were rushing to reach a relative's house in their car; a woman whose car was blown off a road near Seneca; and four family members _ Rick Rountree, his wife, his 13-year-old son, and his mother-in-law _ who were in a van on the way to a friend's wedding when a twister packing winds of 170 mph struck the Seneca area on Saturday night.

The sheeple, they are a ba-a-a-a-a-a-ing and trampling around, so a-feared that their consumptive, gluttonish ways are a-catchin' up to thems, yes they are.

And they (which includes you, the one reading this; yes it does) should be.

But hey--ya' still got yer Wal-Mart, and yer Home Depot, and yer unlives working for the corporation, and yer cute little suburban McMansion..... So what the hell do you care that hundreds of thousands are being disrupted--by your (yes, by you, the stupid f**ckhead reading this) gluttony, your ignorance, your vile insistence on more, more more?

You claim to care.

Right.

Methinks, like all the disasters that have gone down in California, that the earth is trying to tell us something, that it is getting overdeveloped and overcrowded, polluted to an excess.

I don't believe in any apocalypse, but the earth has always had natural disasters. It's just in the past, there weren't as many people as now. What can we do? Not much.

It could happen anywhere, anytime. What if Yellowstone blows? We can kiss the U.S. goodbye for the most part.

So, because earthquakes are not a part of the global warming issue, we are NOT ALLOWED to post about Climate Change?

That's a pretty good trick for the Huffy Monitor-thugs: Climate Change posts are considered OFF-TOPIC and will be removed.

And before they are removed, our resident Republi-thugs will attack. Gee. Arianna, when do we get a Climate Change thread?

The best way to honor those who lost their lives in these disasters is to make a commitment to prevent more of the same from happening again, where ever possible.

It's not just about these isolated events, but the frequency and severity at which they have been occurring that should alarm us all. It is a well documented fact that as the ocean temp warms, hurricanes and cyclones gain in intensity. Anybody see "The Day After Tomorrow?" Great movie.

I'm suprised the evangelicals haven't popped up everywhere spewing all sorts of "the end is near" doomsday rhetoric ....

What's the deal: something with war, water storms, fires, all sorts of natural disasters in some sort of chronological order signifies the end of the world? or it signifies God is coming back down to earth for everyone? ...

I don't know which, what exactly it is they believe, but I DO KNOW whenever big storms and natural disaster sort of things like this happen the bible thumpers are usually vocalizing the end of days is near. Good Grief.

Sodoma and Gomorra
The tower of Babylon

History repeats it self. The reason why we have so much damage now, because we build on every spot of land. There were always tornadoes, but they had miles of land to twirl their funnels.

That would be Sodom and Gomorrah and the Tower of Babel.

Didn't you pay attention when Uncle Ben gave you religious instruction?

Give 'em time! Look at it this way, they come out of the woodwork every time the planet clears its throat... one of these days they're gonna be right!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:26 AM on 05/13/2008

$64K question: when are these mindless sheep going to understand that the 'end of days' is inevitable -though, has nothing to do with predictions, forecast, so-forth from their ancient book of fables- rather, because they're huge contributers to destroying this planet.

And if they're so concerned re: 'end is near' why don't they do their part to change it by putting an end to their careless, abusive, gluttonous relationship w/it: and have some concern re: ozone, climate change, energy over-consumption, polluting, etc.

They completley ignore any science and reality, live like careless pigs: do they think if they spend their Sunday mornings in church praying to God and asking him/her not to bring the end of days then the problem will just be solved? They'll take no personal responsibility or action, rather God will listen to their prayers and solve it: that simple for them?

..These idiots and their blissful ignorance: wonder if there's been any change w/ these 'types' in accepting things like climate change. I remember a couple years one night flipping through channels, stumbling across Sean Hannity on Faux-News blabbering on, insisting it wasn't at all real, rather just a bunch of liberal hooha. Unreal!

Anyway, instead of comments 3x -to you, BeyondGood, and Volvo- throwing it out to all, as well as anyone reading this: anyone know, by chance, if idiotic Faux-News talking heads, or other GOP surrogates, are STILL telling their sheepies that climate change is absolutely pure hype?

The earth is not angry, but we will be pretty hungry in 20 years unless we clean up our act.
When the earth overheats, it cool itself down. This is nothing out of the ordinary, or mystical.

There will be more volcanic eruptions, and the ash will eventually cause the earth's temperature to fall.
The storms are a response to the increase in temperature. Can you say convection? That is how air circulates.

I hope you like the taste of algae! because very soon, that is all we will be eating. Yum!

The Chinese earthquake, America's tornados and Myanmar's cyclone are neither the result of mankind's sin nor its technology. The Galveston hurricane of 1900, the Chinese earthquake of 1556, the Krakatoa eruption of 1883 and the Thera eruption of 1600 b.c. not to mention the dozen or so calderas dotting the planet all demonstrate that far worse natural disasters have happened before and thousands of years after we're gone they'll continue to happen.

The Nature had been balanced by God. Now the Nature is increasingly being thrown off balance. This cannot be accidental nor cyclical. Something is happening that unbalances God's work and plans! Two many great disasters have happened recently, including the Chilean volcano which erupted after being dormant for more than 3,000 years! I hate to be an alarmist, but the Bible does speak about "many natural disasters preceding the end of the world"! The moral is: we should return to God with all our hearts, minds, and souls ... just in case!

Why not the U.S.? Bush said he invaded Iraq out of a sense of duty to the Kurds after the WMD's story turned out to be false.

Why not save the Burmese from their tyrant?

In this case, yes I am. How long is the world going to sit back at watch this atrocity play out? We did it with Cambodia, Rawanda, Bosnia, and countless others. This is WHY the UN was formed to begin with- to prevent this type of genocide by a government on its people. So to answer your question- yes.
