I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Hillary In Low Light

As the odds get longer and longer, the obvious question is: Why doesn't Hillary Clinton gracefully concede defeat and throw her support behind her party's defacto nominee, Barack Obama?

As my colleague at Salon, Walter Shapiro puts it: "What motivates her? Is it ambition, pride, feminism, vindication, public service or ideology? Or is it some combination of all of them?"

Mary Sanchez, writing for the Kansas City Star, is more blunt: Hillary should scram:

'A lady always knows when to leave the party.' Or so my mother used to say. It's time for Hillary Clinton to take a tip and leave - not the party, of course, but the presidential race....She should save her political future and concede the nomination to Obama. The Democratic Party's chances to win the White House are at stake now, not just her own career. Or her husband's ambitions, if it is he who is pushing her to continue in a race she cannot win.

The decision, Peter Keating, former senior writer for politics at George who
now covers sports business for ESPN, suggests is "how much she wants to hurt Obama. And when she equated 'white Americans' with 'hard-working Americans' in attacking Obama last week, she signaled that she's still willing to campaign destructively. As long as Hillary is playing with her knife collection, she can make Obama bleed."

Michael Crowley has his own interesting take:

[O]ne gets the overall impression that the Clintons feel Obama shouldn't be here in the first place--that this 'young man's' very claim to power is itself questionable. In this sense, the Clintons may be victims of their own sense of victimhood. The vileness of the Clintons' past enemies seems to have convinced them that their enemies always are, by definition, in the wrong. And that Obama's candidacy is almost like another illegitimate attempt to steal a White House that, in some sense, belongs to them.

Speculating on the Clintons' motives and what they hope to achieve has become the media parlor game of the moment. To add my own two cents worth, I suspect, but have no way of knowing, that she is:

*Praying for a devastating anti-Obama story -- Jeremiah Wright-Tony Rezko squared - to surface and turn the Illinois Senator into an unacceptable candidate in the eyes of the media and convention delegates. This is clearly a long-shot, and presumably her aides have no such story in reserve or it would have already seen the light of day.

*Convinced, correctly, that after running a lousy campaign she has finally hit her stride as reflected in her solid victories in Texas, Ohio and, on Tuesday, in West Virginia. These victories, in her eyes and in the eyes of many of her aides, demonstrate that Obama is an empty suit weighed down with general election liabilities that are only coming to light at the close of the nomination process.

Story continues below
advertisement

*Psychically unable to accept defeat -- after first believing she was the anointed candidate, and then, after losing her superstar status, clawing her way back into contention in an extraordinary display of grit.

Opinions on this subject are a dime a dozen. Just go to RealClearPolitics and get your fill for free.

The more important issue is that Hillary's continued battle for the nomination, no matter how futile and no matter what the motivation, has consequences. One of the best analyses of the likely consequences is by June Kronholz in the Wall Street Journal.

"What is clear," Kronholz writes, is that "when challengers refused to concede and instead pursued the nomination into the convention," their party's nominee got beaten in November. She cites Ronald Reagan's 1976 challenge to Gerald Ford, Senator Edward M. ('Teddy') Kennedy's 1980 bid to unseat Jimmy Carter, and Senator Gary Hart's insurgency against Walter Mondale in 1984.

Ford, Carter and Mondale all faced uphill general election struggles, no matter what kind of primary fights they had, while this year the "Democrats have the electoral winds at their back," she notes. But, Kronholz concludes, "a long, ugly nominating battle that splits the party still could cost it the White House."

For Hillary, there may be very little downside in staying in the race until the bitter end, or at least until the final delegates are selected on June 4.

Under once scenario - Obama gets the nomination but loses to John McCain - Clinton could begin her 2012 campaign on November 5, 2008, as a vindicated politician, using the narrative that she was the better candidate.

Under the alternative scenario - Hillary promptly concedes and Obama wins the presidency - she may well have lost her one shot at the highest office in the land, and the White House and the power, prestige and status that goes with it, will be forever out of her reach - a intensely painful prospect.

As the odds get longer and longer, the obvious question is: Why doesn't Hillary Clinton gracefully concede defeat and throw her support behind her party's defacto nominee, Barack Obama? As my colleag...

Dear Hillary,

As a Republican, this has been a big day for me. 4 weeks ago, I watched you insist on staying in the race - I agreed you had every right - its the American way afterall. Besides, as a Republican sitting on the fence, not happy with my party's nominee, I was paying attention to what you and Obama were saying.

But today, my fence broke when Bush made his comments and McCane opened his big mouth. Those two things should never happen on the same day. And now, I can finally say I am officially a fallen Republican, and have landed happily into the Obama camp.

I will tell you, the reason you did not break my fall is not only because of Obama's contagious and powerful positive motivation about changing this nation and changing the world, I saw you take your drive on flat tires too long this past week. There is a difference - you need to know when to say "stop" - and it made me fear that not knowing when to make the right choice when the chips are down . . . scared me about your clarity and ability to make decisions for the nation when it was appropriate. At this point, it is just too cockey to be admirable.

Girl, it's time to take your ball and jax and go home. How you do this, will make all the difference for years to come. Make it good - you only have

Yeah... she should stop... before she wins another state by 41 points... and before either candidate has reached the winning number. If Obama was so good... he'd have knocked Hillary out. The fact is... he's has no experience and is a fraud. All the kids... can want him... like a pack of cigarettes, keg and bong... but adult voters realize what's being marketed and understand the consequences.

Adult voters for Hillary, eh?

I'm mid 30's and used to vote republican. I'd consider myself a well-informed voter and am behind Barack 100% (and $250 so far). Pretty surprising eh? Even more surprising when you consider I've been prejudiced toward blacks in the past. What is it about Barack that inspires so many people like me?
Experience? Your argument relies on a relevant term. There are only a handful of people with presidential "experience" living yet. Our fore fathers' intentions were not to have "experienced" people run our government, rather the opposite.
Fraud? Where is your evidence? That's like me calling you a stupid-poopy-pants.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:14 PM on 05/16/2008

And why didn't the adult voters end this? Why didn't the "inevitable" candidate knock him out? (And big wins: Barak had already out-tallied her by 20, 30, and 40 point spreads seven times...).

I'm a hard working, 55 year old white Obama supporter who, now, must evidently face the fact I'm not an adult. Talk about elitist attitudes.

Oh. BTW: I live in MICHIGAN.

And experience? Why doesn't the seasoned veteran know how to successfully handle caucuses -- that have been around for all of the years she claims experience? Why is her campaign millions in the hole? Is that the experience that should lift us out of this tragically trashed economy?

I think not.

Instead we get variations of "if you won't play by my rules, I'm taking my toys and going home!" or holding your breath until you turn.... Red (that would be voting against your alleged political interests and principles if... check that... WHEN Obama wins).

Very adult indeed.

Exactly how is Obama a fraud? Do you mean that he's a "never really dodged sniper fire" fraud? Or more like a "he changes his accent in each state he goes to" type fraud? Or even "the only states that matter are ones that I win" kind of a fraud?

Just asking.

I agree with you. Obama is not the man Americans think he is. Is this the new attack on America, the terriorist get their people in our highest office? I hope we voters wake up and realize Hillary has the experience and solid adviser in her husband. She is definitely the person for the job. Only the Clintons will get us out of Iraq and put a cap on the big oil companies to resucitate our economy. Wake up America. You are about to do a major injustice and we will all regret it in the future, where we will never be safe from terrorism because we will not know which direction or who it will come from next. Possibly from our highest office?

lugslady07 ,

For your information we already have a terrorist ally in the White House,George Bush.
everything he's done has furthered the Al Qaeda cause. Were it not for him the terrorists would not be so insinuated in Iraq and would probably not have made so much headway in Pakistan. If Pakistan falls to the Islamic radicals then they will have nuclear weapons at their disposal, What then. Who will have helped them get that. Bush seems to know how to grow enemies for America. He's done a damned fine job of it. All he has to do is throw around a few nasty words, like Axis of evil or some false charges and he can stirs up something new. With any luck he will have Russia and the ourselves at each others throats again.

Hilliary is not a genuine person. She says one thing then if it does not go over well she adjusts it.
She is a cheater, a hate monger and a sore loser. I will never again vote for anyone named Clinton. I don't see how anyone can support a candiate that says yes I voted for that, but I'm glad it did not pass.
Anyone voting for Hilliary or MCain will be voting for putting the final nail in the coffin of this Nation. Hilliary is so hateful she would rather tear the party apart than concede and be a team player. Now that people can see her true character, I hope after losing tihs primary election she loses her senate seat.

"the terrorist are going to take over America from the White House..."

Seriously, dude, we get that part. We've just gone through eight years of it. That is why the only ones who can stop the Blue Wave are the Blues who believe such distracting mis-information, and accept that crap without actually thinking or researching.

That's why I like setting two straight-from-the-dictionary definitions side-by-side:

1. Liberal: Not limited to-or-by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

2. Bigotry: Stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own.

And Charles, please, while you are at your deep research, go read about Hillary's religious associations while you're at it: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2007/09/hillarys-prayer.html

If you're going to get all exercised over one person's religious connections, you may as well get all exercised over both. Do us a favor, take a breath (or a pill), and do a little reading from sources other than the ones coming from the Republican handouts.

It's fascinating how many HillBillies have trouble with grammar and spelling. It is that demographics they write about -- non-educated, elderly, raised with the mind-set that the TV is the "window to the world", the kind that loved Roseanne and Married With Children....a chunk of America which will be dead by 2012.

Whats the matter, did the latest drug craze lose its appeal? so now yall are searching for something else, and its o.k if its a hate mongerer bent on vengeance. Anything for a thrill, huh? And speaking of grammer and spelling, check out abc news comment pages and see what kind of things obama followers are saying, oh and check their spelling! I say followers, not supporters, because thats what obamamaniacs are, they are sheep being led to the slaughter!

Er... yeah. He's done that quite a few times (meaning beat her by way huge margins). If he were god to everyone, then I'm totally convinced that god *would* help us all if she got out now.

Look, he withstood the best of the attacks that could be thrown at him (except it worked better when the Clintons and MSM were tossing Wright at him than the Republicans; they've tried it twice in special elections in DEEP RED territory - -and were beaten by the Democratic opponents anyway).

Guilt by association has little real effect when the candidate and his campaign are so well run. But, if you really, really must live in that guilt-by-association world, then you are bound by those very principles to read this: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2007/09/hillarys-prayer.html .

And what's the guilty associations for Hillary there? Oh, nobody other than John Ashcroft, George "Macacca" Allen, Sam Brownback and Rick Santorum.

Just love the way folks like Edsall have all the scenarios lined up and then predict what will happen if Hillary stays or goes. Something Edsall doesn't realize and lots of the Obamacons don't either, she is in no trouble about keeping her Senate seat. She has a political future, a damn good one, IF she loses this nomination. And just imagine what would happen to the Democratic Party if she should leave......the Democratic Party, perhaps run as an independent? There are many, many folks out there who would still stick solidly behind Hillary. And lots and lots of states where she won, all the industrial states except Illinois, where I know for a fact that she has a lot of very high regard. The Party could be in big trouble of its own.

If Obama loses... it's because he couldn't win. period. It says something BAD about him
that he just lost a swing state by 41 points AFTER he gave his NC General election speech.

If you understood the concept of delegates -- and that they are real people -- and at the DNC in August there will be about 4,000 delegates (people) there. A difference of
140 people on either side... is not much at all. Try to think not just blaaaag.

Oh yeah, wasn't there a precedent in a dimly recalled election when some guy named Gore, if I recall correctly, relented to such pressure and conceded? Probably historically inconsequential though, huh?

Once a trend is detected, we might as well truncate the process. Later voters we really don't need anyway; their votes only perpetuate the illusion of uncertainty when pundits and bloggers waving public opinion polls have already determined the outcome. Come to think of it ,why the hell have elections anyway when we are constantly fed opinion polls interpreted by experts?

Obama campaigned to be a US SENATOR. He went out, gave speeches, told people how hard he would work to serve them. He GOT elected... and 7months later... he decided he didn't want the job... he want to be president instead. So he doesn't care about serving anything other than his EGO. His own pastor, his spiritual intimate mentor said Obama's a LIAR: "a politician who will do or say whatever he has to to get elected".

That man and his hate for this country and white people is not going to file with americans over 30yrs.

Hinnis and oscarp and others of their ilk can soothe themselves with however many mean-spirited delusions they care to put forth. Whatever happens, all of us who are seeking a restoration of America's values and standing in the world will not be daunted. If Obama is the person we feel will further the restoration, then that's who we'll be voting for. No amount of derisive divisive commentary or its seconding will deter us from what we know to be true. Politics 101:

WE THE PEOPLE of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect UNION, establish JUSTICE, insure DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY, provide for the common DEFENCE, promote the GENERAL WELFARE, and secure the BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY to ourselves and our Posterity.

Obama is the candidate most likely to uphold these principles, and that's why we're voting for him.

Hillary will be too old in eight years, or even in four. She is not able to understand that the "Rovian" ways are outdated.
I know, I know McCain is even older, but I consider him way too old. I have nothing against older people at all, I just think that running for president is such a tough job that you need to be younger to be able to keep up.

Politics 101 for Obama supporters: FIRST: Obama wins the nomination without winning the popular vote, and based upon early unrepresentative causes wins. SECOND: As polls show, at least 28% of Hillary supporters refuse to vote for Obama, and many instead vote for McCain. THIRD: This leaves Obama with the AA, the teenyboppers, and the party elite. FOURTH: The Republican Party is energized by the prospect of running against an inexperienced, deceptive and divisive politician, with a list of shady associations longer than a football field. FIFTH: With much ammunition, the 527s pepper the airwaves with Obama's gaffes, Rev. Wright, William "the bomb" Ayers, black liberation theology, the most liberal member of the Senate, Bittergate, etc. FIFTH: The night before the election, the Obama's teenyboppers have mass celebratory keg parties all over the country, get too drunk, and are unable to vote in the election the next day. SIXTH: Obama is defeated and John McCain takes the oath of office in front of millions of cheering Republicans and Democrats. SEVENTH: Patriotic and savvy observers around the country breathe a collective sigh of relief in realization of how narrowly they had adverted disaster. EIGHTH: Many Obama supporters have to attend 12-step meetings in an effort to wean themselves off of their addiction to responding to all criticism with attacks, insults, and race cards.

Hinnis, you are the best!!! Great post !! Well, you described just as it will happen !!!! Only problem, they might need more than 12-step meeting to overcome their frustration and anger, I guess it will be a lifetime, hate does not wash away so fast.

LOL, think 12 steps will be needed to be taken by the feminista's who have indeed been Hillary's base support out of their own frustrations at not able to crakc many ceilings or the perceivement they have NOT and just need this HRC as CIC to make their point which is NOT truly in their best interest other than for show and tell. Then there are the uneducated , hardworking BITTER /FEARFUL white folks more than willing to accept the "cover" to their innate racist mindsets that the CLintons offer and those males in her rank, well, they are willing to give the lady a pass and let her have the title figuring Billy will be there guiding and instructing the decisions so things will be kept in check and no hysterical oms'd woman is going tomuck things up too much with a tizzy fit /etc....GET A REALITY CHECK and for those Clinton campers who vow THEY will either stay home or vote McCain...start shopping for replace noses NOW !!! IF they choose to be so foolish to be bitter and spitefully inclined, they too will desrve the worst of al possibles and have McC take the title and all that he will NOT SO MAVERICKLY CHANGE but just go along to get along and relish the trappings of being empowered to do so !!

I am a feminist and I dont want Hillary. I would love to have a woman but not this woman. I dont trust her or believe anything she says. She reminds me of Bush. She doesnt have the math the only way she can win is to cheat.

"the Republican Party is energized by the prospect of running against an inexperienced, deceptive and divisive politician, with a list of shady associations longer than a football field." why not, they're already energized by the prospect of running WITH an experienced, deceptive and divisive politician, with a list of shady associations longer than a football field... that's a debate they can easily win.

First: Obama is ahead in the popular vote, even when FL and MI are included, he still beats Hillary. Second: the popular vote totals do not reflect the popular vote of IA, NV, ME,and WA. Hillary does not include these totals in her calculation.
Third: does Hillary seek to disenfranchise those voters?
Fourth: Obama's scandals are nothing compared to Hillary's scandals. Whitewater, travelgate, billings gate, Castle Grande, the ongoing civil case of Paul v. Clinton, Rose Law firm, etc....
Fifth: Your childish rants do not help your losing candidate.

Politics 101 for Clintoon supporters for 2008. FIRST: Hillary (America’s EVITA) steals the nomination in Denver. SECOND: Obama supporters break for McCain or stay home and let Hillary deal with her 47% hard wired negatives among the population. THIRD: Republican energized and galvanized by their blind hatred of Hillary will flood the polls and vote against her AND every democrat “Down Ticket”. FOURTH: The democrats both go down to defeat and all gains in 2006 are wiped out. LAST: President McCain will have the luxury of both a republican congress & appointing up to four hard line anti women supreme court justices = GAME OVER

I know how very difficult it is for Obamas worshippers to get that not everyone sees him as the second comming , but DEAL with it !
Bad mouthing Clinton just makes helps certain he will not be elected, Guess thats really (your )underlying goal , huh? Otherwise you could'nt have one .

Clinton, Miss I'll do anything to get elected Zombies. They cant admit she doesnt have the math. Without cheating, Michigan and Florida she agreed to until she didnt have the numbers than she crys the votes need to be counted! If Barack played the same game if she had his numbers he would be laughed out of the Senate. Who wants a President that no one trusts and cheats.
