JACKSON, Miss. — It's becoming a disturbing trend for Republicans: losing traditional GOP strongholds to Democrats in some hard-fought congressional races.

It happened again Tuesday, as Travis Childers beat Greg Davis in a special election to replace Republican Roger Wicker, who served in the House since 1994 and was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott.

Childers' win will give him the chance over the next several months left in the seat's two-year term to build a fundraising and publicity advantage as he heads into November's general election. He will again face Davis, as well as two other opponents.

Childers' win gave Democrats a 236-199 edge over Republicans in Congress.

Earlier this year, Democrats captured the Illinois district long represented by former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert, who resigned from Congress. This month, Democrats claimed a seat in Louisiana that Republican Rep. Richard Baker vacated and that the GOP had held since 1974.

Childers is a socially conservative county official, while Davis is mayor of a fast-growing city across the state line from Memphis, Tenn.

Vice President Dick Cheney campaigned for Davis the day before the special election, and Davis ran ads trying to tie Childers to Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the national Democratic Party's policies.

Childers stressed his independence, emphasizing his support of gun rights and opposition to abortion. He said his values match those of most voters in the deeply conservative district.

Tom Cole, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the Mississippi race showed that "Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority."

Cole said voters are "pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general" and the GOP must offer "positive change."

Marty Wiseman, a political scientist at Mississippi State University, said if Democrats can carry districts that traditionally have been safe bets for the GOP, "Republican strategists have to be terrified."

"If you think about the House and the Senate ... and the number of Republican Senate seats that are exposed, this could turn into something bigger than the presidential race this fall," Wiseman said.

Elsewhere, in right-leaning Nebraska, Republican Mike Johanns, the former U.S. agriculture secretary and Nebraska governor, easily won the Republican primary Tuesday in a race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel. On the Democrat side, Scott Kleeb beat three other Democrats.

And in West Virginia, a conflict-of-interest scandal derailed the state's top judge from serving another term. With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard, once considered a shoo-in for re-election, was third in a field of four candidates.

The two top vote-getters will face the lone Republican in the race for two high court spots in November.

Maynard lost his advantage when photos surfaced in January of him vacationing with the chief executive of a massive coal producer. He faced a former justice, a Huntington lawyer and a West Virginia University law professor.

Maynard raised the most money, and his allies included the state's chamber of commerce and medical association. But the photos taken during a 2006 Monaco vacation, when he met up with Massey Energy Co.'s chief executive, quickly became campaign fodder.

Maynard blamed the furor on political foes, but withdrew from several Massey-related cases. He had said he would do the same if re-elected.

West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who hasn't lost a statewide race since 1972, easily beat two challengers as he seeks a fifth six-year term. He'll face Republican Jay Wolfe in November's general election.

Gov. Joe Manchin easily fended off a primary challenge and will take on Republican Russ Weeks, a former state senator, in November.

You need to remember that the way Childers won this race was by putting out a counter-ad against the repug Rev Wright smear.

In the counter ad, Childer's had to claim that he didn't even KNOW Obama and had NEVER met him. Childer's claimed in this ad that he and his family were being smeared by claims that they were associated with Obama. Childers didn't make any attenpt to defend Obama at all. He basically said it was a smear tactic for his opponents to even claim that Childers had ever met Obama. That's not much of an endorsement of the presumptive dem nominee. How do you think Childers will use his new super delegate vote now?

He'll probably keep it in his pocket. (sd vote). I think KATRINA is drowning the republicans in the gulf region. This election shouldn't be about Obama. It should be about America. While I am a supporter, I see the bigger picture. The People must reclaim the House and the Senate. It, IMHO is even more important that the WH.

It is going to be a long time before Republicans will be relevant again. They have tried repeatedly to pin this war and the lack of success on the Democrats but I guess they overestimated the stupidity of the public. The public remembers who started the war. They remember the bravado with which they were claiming that they could fight a war on two fronts. They remember the talk of how the surge would miraculously solve all the problems. They remember people like Rumsfeld, Powell, Condi, Cheny and Bush babbling about WMD's in Iraq. To this day all they have managed to find is industrial strength cleaner and some depleted sarin gas shell that were provided by - wait for it - the United States.

I am indescribably glad this Childers/Travis race is over, and the right man won. The Repubs and various neocon groups ran ad after ad after ad on local tv, slinging mud wildly, but it didn't work. They sank a fortune into this campaign, to no avail. If this deeply, deeply conservative district won't elect a Republican this year, the Repub party is in considerable trouble. And it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch. Ha ha ha.

I must say that as much as Bush is to be hated and reviled you cannot argue with the fact that he has made the Republican party into the most hated political party in America. Thanks Mr. Bush, hope you have a good retirement along with your wife and daughters.

There are some comments below about Obama's "coat tails" with respect to the Mississippi District 1 race. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Childers did as much as possible to distance himself from the Obama/Wright "God Damn America" ads that Greg Davis was putting on TV. Childers went as far as to deny that Obama had ever said anything nice about him.

The story isn't that Obama helped Childers win. Childers was favored to win. The story is that trying to associate the candidate with Jeremiah Wright's comments didn't work. It may have hurt Childers, but it didn't cause a massive loss of support even in the Deep South.

The implication for this Fall is that the GOP may rethink their strategy to hang Wright/Ayers around Obama's neck. It didn't work in May when the story was relatively fresh. Five months from now the story will be even more stale.

The GOP may well have just lost their most powerful weapon against Obama in the general election.

This is absolutely wonderful, we are kicking in Operation Chaos for the Republican's. I wonder if old disgusting Rush will be talking about THAT today. Maybe he can form another ingenious plan!!

Republicans have been ruined by the politics of the people that stick to BUSH, like Liebermann, Cornyn, McCain, Graham, etc. Now we need to take THEIR seats. THEY don't deserve to represent the people. Especially, MCCAIN , Liebermann, Graham, CORNYN(TX FOOL). But I am repeating, there are so many more. We need to make a list. Any one up for it???

you think itis wonderful that Childers had to make sure the voters were told he didn't know Obama and had never met him in order to win the race?

Of course! It proves you don't need anybodies coattails as long as you have that "D" behind your name this year.

Don't you get the picture? ANYBODY can beat the Republicans this year. ANYBODY.

Get real. This is Miss. The man did what he had to to take a repug seat. Would you rather he kiss up to Obama and have the seat go back to the repugs?

The MSM are ignoring this stunning development in the deep south while babbling on and on about the meaningless beauty contest in W. Virginia.
Obama and the dems are on course for landslide victories of epic proportions this fall.
Change is on its way!

It's profitable for media to keep the Democratic Primary going.

It also lets them ignore issues.

MSNBC talked about it in detail last night.
They had, among others, Huckabee weigh in and he frankly said this was a big loss. He talked about how he and Cheney campaigned there and thought it would be a win, and that their brand is so damaged that McCain will have to run on more than just being a Republican or they will have a real hard time in Nov.

The Indiana electorate's recognition of the ridiculous gas tax holiday scheme as a cynical attempt by politicians from both parties to manipulate the public through old-style nonsensical pandering and the surge of support for the candidate who went against common political wisdom and spoke to the people like adults, allowing him to narrow his opponent's predicted margin of victory from more than twenty points to less than two, signaled an important change in American campaign politics. For the first time in decades, the candidates who appeal to the lowest common denominator are being rejected and candidates who challenge the people to think for themselves are being rewarded. It may have taken the financial and moral bankrupting of our country, but I believe that the majority of the American people have come around to the fact that they have been voting against their own self interest and that we are now paying the price for relying in authoritarian father figures to take care of everything for us. Voters who used to flock to leaders who stubbornly refused to admit their faults because they considered it a sign of weakness, are increasingly turning to leaders who admit their faults because they recognize that there is strength in humility and a willingness to change.

Ha ha.

The dems are gonna win big time in Nov.

All that heavy Obama negative ad and the Dick meant nada for the election.

Too bad, so sad for them old republicans that thumbed their noses at the voters.

Why would they use Dick - after his famous "SO???" when told the American voters did not want to stay in Iraq???

Talk about stupid politics. The only person with a lower pole that Bush is the Dick Chaney.

Oh well.

Don't forget to vote folks!!!

Childers publicly distanced himself from Obama, said he had never met him. Childers evidently felt compelled to do this in order to win.
I live in France. Many politicians distanced themselves from French President Sarkozy who -- like Obama --ran his campaign on a heavy dose of slogans and the word "change" in every other sentence. Some of the politicians who distanced themselves from Sarkozy -- like Childers -- managed to get elected.

If you enjoy peace and quiet, ask a self-described Republican voter to explain his/her reasons.

Then, find a comfortable couch and read a little.
