JACKSON, Miss. — It's becoming a disturbing trend for Republicans: losing traditional GOP strongholds to Democrats in some hard-fought congressional races.

It happened again Tuesday, as Travis Childers beat Greg Davis in a special election to replace Republican Roger Wicker, who served in the House since 1994 and was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott.

Childers' win will give him the chance over the next several months left in the seat's two-year term to build a fundraising and publicity advantage as he heads into November's general election. He will again face Davis, as well as two other opponents.

Childers' win gave Democrats a 236-199 edge over Republicans in Congress.

Earlier this year, Democrats captured the Illinois district long represented by former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert, who resigned from Congress. This month, Democrats claimed a seat in Louisiana that Republican Rep. Richard Baker vacated and that the GOP had held since 1974.

Childers is a socially conservative county official, while Davis is mayor of a fast-growing city across the state line from Memphis, Tenn.

Vice President Dick Cheney campaigned for Davis the day before the special election, and Davis ran ads trying to tie Childers to Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the national Democratic Party's policies.

Childers stressed his independence, emphasizing his support of gun rights and opposition to abortion. He said his values match those of most voters in the deeply conservative district.

Tom Cole, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the Mississippi race showed that "Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority."

Cole said voters are "pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general" and the GOP must offer "positive change."

Marty Wiseman, a political scientist at Mississippi State University, said if Democrats can carry districts that traditionally have been safe bets for the GOP, "Republican strategists have to be terrified."

"If you think about the House and the Senate ... and the number of Republican Senate seats that are exposed, this could turn into something bigger than the presidential race this fall," Wiseman said.

Elsewhere, in right-leaning Nebraska, Republican Mike Johanns, the former U.S. agriculture secretary and Nebraska governor, easily won the Republican primary Tuesday in a race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel. On the Democrat side, Scott Kleeb beat three other Democrats.

And in West Virginia, a conflict-of-interest scandal derailed the state's top judge from serving another term. With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard, once considered a shoo-in for re-election, was third in a field of four candidates.

The two top vote-getters will face the lone Republican in the race for two high court spots in November.

Maynard lost his advantage when photos surfaced in January of him vacationing with the chief executive of a massive coal producer. He faced a former justice, a Huntington lawyer and a West Virginia University law professor.

Maynard raised the most money, and his allies included the state's chamber of commerce and medical association. But the photos taken during a 2006 Monaco vacation, when he met up with Massey Energy Co.'s chief executive, quickly became campaign fodder.

Maynard blamed the furor on political foes, but withdrew from several Massey-related cases. He had said he would do the same if re-elected.

West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who hasn't lost a statewide race since 1972, easily beat two challengers as he seeks a fifth six-year term. He'll face Republican Jay Wolfe in November's general election.

Gov. Joe Manchin easily fended off a primary challenge and will take on Republican Russ Weeks, a former state senator, in November.

Okay come on supers Obama has helped you pick up 3 for 3 seats against the elephant. Obama has 3 things the Clinton's don't have.

1) $$$ Money
2) The Political Machine
3) Coat Tails

There is a elephant sitting in the room, and it's a republican. ;)

Congratulations to all the DEMS that unseated republicans in the special elections - especially Childers who was unfairly targeted with the Wright Controversy

Got that right Marc, Davis and the RNC ran the dirtiest and rottenist campaign I have ever seen in my 50 years of life. It was lie upon lie and they forced Childers to react in ways I'm sure he is not to proud of. But he had to fight fire with fire. We here in the Mississippi 1st district are proud of our new Congressman Travis Childers.

This show us how the Barack Obama brand is! The republicans are going to get spanked. They all stated that if Barack become the nominee they would lose seats. They knew if Hillary won the would have a chance. People love to vote against the Clintons. Now, the republicans are just waiting to see how large this wave is. I say it is a tidal way. LOL

The RNC cannot be happy about this. And it is more evidence that the Republican brand is a suffering one right now, they can thank the Bush administration for that one. This is also more evidence that 7 years of Bush policy has totally changed the electoral map, there will be traditional red states that will be in play for the Democrats to steal come November.

A happy day.

But to be realistic, one should remember that Mississippi ain't Massachusetts.

And some guy from down South elected as a Democrat ain't necessarily Barney Frank.

No one is saying that Childers will be a left wing Democrat. But he IS NOT a Republican. The most important thing about these special elections is that they are a solid indication that the Democrats are capable of picking up MANY seats this November in both the House and the Senate. Readers - study your region. If you are represented by a strong Democrat, find the closest district where the Democrats have a fighting chance against an incumbent Republican, and do everything within your power to help that Democratic candidate win. Your reward? Ecstasy on election night. I know - I donated to Jerry McNerney in 2006, who defeated Richard Pombo, the most anti-environmentalist member of the House. Getting rid of Pombo was delightful!

Make no mistake - I'm delighted to see Republicans defeated.

As an apostate from that Church, I'm hoping to see it go the way of the Whigs.

But at the end of the day ideology not party labels matter.

If we elect Gingrich, Boehner, DeLay, McCrazy clones as "Democrats", it won't be a real improvement.

All it will mean is to cement procedural control for the DP in the Congress - a benefit.

Until of course one of our "yahoos" gets to be committee chairman.

The audacity of hope needs to be leavened with an unflinching acceptance of reality.
To achieve one's dreams one has to acknowledge how things are now and not imagine they already are what one hopes to achieve.

Thats funny. You are right though. Childers is a very conservative Democrat, he's not even 'moderate' by Northeast or West Coast standards.

What kind of Democrat are Childers, Foster, and Cazayoux? Other than the fact that these wins make Republican prospects in November that much bleaker, are we getting anyone we can really cheer about?

It's called addition by subtraction.

I can only speak of Foster since I voted in the election. He beat Jim Oberweis, Hastert's handpicked successor, an owner of a chain of dairys in northern Illinois. Foster worked with the FermiLab and owns a multimillion dollar business and is a first time candidate. His draw was that he did not outsource jobs to foreign countries when he could have, and it gave him great credibility.

The desire for change is deep in this country. The pundits can talk all they want, but the fact is Republicans are going to take it in the backside in November.

I think technically "owned" is the right word since he sold his ownership in the company to his brother (who already owns most of it and actively manages the company) to avoid any conflicts of interest if he should get elected. But I think just speaking of ownership doesn't really cover it -- Bill Foster and his brother Fred created the company in their garage.

It's a company in Wisconsin that actually manufactures things that get sold -into- Asia. How's that for a switch?

And as for those who might think any big business is evil, this is a company where an outside union organizing effort (i.e. not requested by any employees) died on the vine because they couldn't find anyone who wanted it -- even after Bill's brother told everyone they should be courteous and listen to the organizers.

Good point just because they are democrat doesnt mean its a given that we should get excited. Foster I know for a fact that Obama endorsed him and in fact had some of his volunteers worked to get people register to vote so he is a lot like Obama I think he endorsed Cazayoux too but I'm not not sure what the deal is with Childers.

I think Obama lent his political machine to Childers on the down low. Everyone was watching this election to see if the republican tar and feather treatment was going to work. Much to the dismay of the republicans it didn't. We might see a delegate shift tomorrow, we might not with Hillary's blowout, in WV.

Foster's an ActBlue candidate, so you know he's a yellow dog progressive through thick and thin. He's also a scientist.

Cazayoux is conservative on the minor issues (pro-gun, pro-life) but he's anti-war and pro-health care.

Childers is also a conservative democrat.

It's not the people that were elected, it was the fact that if Republicans can't hold on to these 3 reddest of the red seats, they are looking at a complete wipeout nationwide. If they lose the ex-speaker of the House's seat, what do you think it's going to look like when those Republican's try and keep their seats in upstate New York?

I saw the ad earlier. It is vintage Republican, yet they couldn't tie Childers to Obama and Wright. I agree with the assessment, it is BUSH who is going to be the issue in November.

W and Obama's cousin Cheney successfully destroyed the Republican Party, and by choosing McCain, the party fractured itself further.

The electoral map is going to look very different, and the swing states will change.
