JACKSON, Miss. — It's becoming a disturbing trend for Republicans: losing traditional GOP strongholds to Democrats in some hard-fought congressional races.

It happened again Tuesday, as Travis Childers beat Greg Davis in a special election to replace Republican Roger Wicker, who served in the House since 1994 and was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott.

Childers' win will give him the chance over the next several months left in the seat's two-year term to build a fundraising and publicity advantage as he heads into November's general election. He will again face Davis, as well as two other opponents.

Childers' win gave Democrats a 236-199 edge over Republicans in Congress.

Earlier this year, Democrats captured the Illinois district long represented by former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert, who resigned from Congress. This month, Democrats claimed a seat in Louisiana that Republican Rep. Richard Baker vacated and that the GOP had held since 1974.

Childers is a socially conservative county official, while Davis is mayor of a fast-growing city across the state line from Memphis, Tenn.

Vice President Dick Cheney campaigned for Davis the day before the special election, and Davis ran ads trying to tie Childers to Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the national Democratic Party's policies.

Childers stressed his independence, emphasizing his support of gun rights and opposition to abortion. He said his values match those of most voters in the deeply conservative district.

Story continues below

Tom Cole, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the Mississippi race showed that "Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority."

Cole said voters are "pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general" and the GOP must offer "positive change."

Marty Wiseman, a political scientist at Mississippi State University, said if Democrats can carry districts that traditionally have been safe bets for the GOP, "Republican strategists have to be terrified."

"If you think about the House and the Senate ... and the number of Republican Senate seats that are exposed, this could turn into something bigger than the presidential race this fall," Wiseman said.

Elsewhere, in right-leaning Nebraska, Republican Mike Johanns, the former U.S. agriculture secretary and Nebraska governor, easily won the Republican primary Tuesday in a race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel. On the Democrat side, Scott Kleeb beat three other Democrats.

And in West Virginia, a conflict-of-interest scandal derailed the state's top judge from serving another term. With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard, once considered a shoo-in for re-election, was third in a field of four candidates.

The two top vote-getters will face the lone Republican in the race for two high court spots in November.

Maynard lost his advantage when photos surfaced in January of him vacationing with the chief executive of a massive coal producer. He faced a former justice, a Huntington lawyer and a West Virginia University law professor.

Maynard raised the most money, and his allies included the state's chamber of commerce and medical association. But the photos taken during a 2006 Monaco vacation, when he met up with Massey Energy Co.'s chief executive, quickly became campaign fodder.

Maynard blamed the furor on political foes, but withdrew from several Massey-related cases. He had said he would do the same if re-elected.

West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who hasn't lost a statewide race since 1972, easily beat two challengers as he seeks a fifth six-year term. He'll face Republican Jay Wolfe in November's general election.

Gov. Joe Manchin easily fended off a primary challenge and will take on Republican Russ Weeks, a former state senator, in November.

The best thing is, the broke NRCC spent way more in this and in Louisiana than they thought they would have to. I see a shake-up coming at the NRCC and possibly in the leadership in the House.

P.S. I plan to write a thank you note to Trent Lott, who resigned so that he could make more money in the private sector LOBBYING than if he would of waited until the end of his term. http://www.breauxlott.com/

The corporate media is owned by republicans . Pat Buchanan advances their platform to maintain division during this election period. He is one of their distractors against everything wrong about Washington in the last 20 days.

This is good news, and I hope that the Dems take 45 more seats in the fall. However, Pelosi needs to go.

I had hoped and thought that a woman as speaker would mean that the Dems would do something, but she failed. It would have been a difficult task, BUT SHE FAILED EVEN BY THOSE STANDARDS.

I am a woman, but that woman has to go, as does Harry Reid. The dems need strong, effective, determined leadership, and they have demonstrated that they do not have those qualities. The Republicans are not the only ones who need new leadership.

Obama will win at minimum five "red" states in November that will more then make up for the loss of a state like WV or KY to the Republicans. Places like VA, WI, CO, ad NC show strong support for Obama, and possible swing states like PA, NV, TN, LA, OH, NM, and who know how many other places have a good chance of voting for the Democratic candidate in the general election.

Look at what happened in MS tonight, IL a few months ago, and LA last week, in which the Democratic candidates running in a longtime Republican district won their specal elections, despite the RNC's constant running of ad's linking the candidates to Obama in a negative way (i.e. Rev. Wrght). They had NO visible effect, and the GOP had to spend millions of dollars they don't have to try a defend districts they have ever had to defend before. This is BEYOND good news for the Democrats, and shows how little interest the nation has for voting for ANY Republican anytime soon, much less John McCain. More then likely, if a Democrat or Independent actually refused to vote for Obama in November, they would rather not vote at all then vote Republican, or at the very least, they could vote for Bob Barr.

Here's Obama's winning electoral college scenario, which he is winning NOW according to polling, with 274 votes: California (55), New York (31), Pennsylvania (21), Illinois (21), Michigan (17), New Jersey (15), Massachusetts (12), Washington (11), Maryland (10), Minnesota (10), Wisconsin (10), Colorado (9), Oregon (7), Connecticut (7), Iowa (7), Nevada (5), New Mexico (5), Hawaii (4), Maine (4), Rhode Island (4), Delaware (3), DC (3), and Vermont (3).

Of course, he also may win Ohio (20), Virginia (13), Missouri (11), and who knows what else?

The point is that even with today's polling, Obama wins the general as shown above.

I'm going to the Colorado State Convention this Saturday as an Obama delegate. He will do just fine here, but Hillary would not. In the mountain west, she is more likely to be the butt of jokes than the object of admiration. Her plastic pandering does not play well here. Witness Representative Mark Udall calling her gas tax holiday a campaign ploy that does no good.

Taking Hastert's seat was a coup. Taking the Louisiana seat (Bush 58%) was a trend. Taking MS 1st is a tidal wave.

Republicans: America is angry with you. Your reaction to the 2006 debacle was to circle the wagons and fillibuster for Bush. We are ticked off, and now you will pay!

This makes a trifecta in three very deeply red districts.

And for you sour grapes Clinton backers who say Obama can't win the general election, the Republicans desperately spent 1.3 million on supporting Davis with TV ads that tied Childers to the hip of Obama, slamming the both of them, and what did that accomplish?

Childers 52%; Davis 48%. Dick Cheney even made an appearance to rally the Republican base.

All three districts, in MS, LA and IL (Hastert's seat) were in Republican hands for over 25 years. Hastert's district was Republican over 30 years.

So, dream on, Clintonistas and ditto heads. Get used to the thought of an African American President.

We can't blame WV. There is a lot of work to do to undo the negative propaganda laid out by the GOP for decades in this country.
People are only doing what they were taught to do, vote again their own interest. Most people have realized their elected officials have stopped working for them, and instead, are working for the big corporations.

I agree. There is much work to be done in WV and it could not be accomplish in one week. Obama did open up several offices and registered new voters. But if you had been working the phones, it became clear that there was an information gap-- and Hillary's hardworking white statement was not helpful.

It would not be in the interest of the corporate owned media to talk about this significant win. The GOP used an ad showing Childers association with Obama, as yet another scare tactic. Obama endorsed Childers. The results was, Childers, a democrat won over a republican seat. This is the change we need to continue throughout elections. To be fair, Abrams and Keith O. on MSNBC each talked about the the Childers win today as being hugh.

On the cable networks,The people who are excited about the Hillary win tonight in WVA. were Pat Buchanan, Sean Hannity, Greta V. The commentators on Abrams program tonight accused Pat Bachunan of race baiting, as a result of his mean spirited comments this evening. Says a lot about your candidacy when your cheerleades are known race baiters.
