Flag Lapel Pin

Chicago Tribune:

So what is that on Barack Obama's lapel as he speaks at a town meeting in conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's hometown, Cape Girardeau, Mo.?

Why, it's a flag pin!

For the second day in a row, Obama has pinned the Stars and Stripes to his suit lapel. He also wore a flag pin yesterday at an appearance in Charleston, W.Va., in which he spoke about patriotism and veterans issues.

Obama does not typically wear a flag pin on his lapel, in contrast to many politicians who now campaign wearing the symbol. But Obama did wear flag lapel pin briefly last month in Pennsylvania, after he was given one by a disabled veteran.

Critics have targeted his habit of dressing without a flag pin to raise questions about his patriotism.

"Sometimes I wear a flag pin, sometimes I don't. For me, the real way to show my patriotism is not necessarily by wearing a flag pin, but in showing my love for this country by my actions. I trust the American people will judge me on those terms." - Senator Barack Obama, September 27th, 2007.

So remind me why Obama wearing a flag pin is a news story???? God help us all...our media wil be our downfall.

I think it's relevant for HuffPo to bring it up because it illustrates the absurdity the main stream media exhibits. But I also think it's relevant that people like yourself complain that the media spends any time on it. It's an f'ing win win situation.

The flagpin was a gift from a veteran; he wearing it out of respect, as anyone would. Now, don't you feel stupid?

Gosh Obama, you didn't have to do that for us. We know you're a great patriot.

The only thing funnier than the media making such a big deal about a flag lapel pin, is someone who would accuse Obama of pandering for wearing one. Hey "zen" guy, go stare at a cave wall like Bodhidahrma. I hope you find enlightenment.

Pandering to WV/KY voters? Is that why he decided to campaign all over those states? I would think that if he were pandering, he tell everyone he was from Scranton, WV or something of the sort.

If he were pandering, he would also down whiskey shots and tell everyone about his duck hunting.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, if someone dons a flag lapel pin to win some votes and avoid some petty criticism should I not vote for them?
Tough question.
For an idiot.
I'll accept this form of "pandering" if that's what you want to call it.

But I won't accept pandering to base and bigoted fears like Hillary has done.

What did Wright say about him?

Oh, that's right ..."just another politician" .

Obama will take a stand - only as long as it's politically expedient.

130 "present" votes.

Sure, just another politician who can motivate Americans to work towards a better America. Obama is no saint but he has the right approach as to how our government is upposed to work. From the bottom up.
And the 130 "present" votes don't mean squat. The illinois legislature often uses present votes as a form of political protest and if you compare it to the thousands of votes he made, it's an incredibly small percentage. If that's all you got, it should be a landslide in November.

I have always disliked the flag lapel pin. The idea that it makes the person wearing it some kind of patriot or better American is a joke.

HOWEVER, since there are so many dopey people out there that do judge people's patriotism on such nonsensical things, if I were Obama, I'd just wear the damn through the general election so that it's one less issue for Republicans to make a big deal out of nothing over.

I think that's a reasonable conclusion. Some times as a young male you take out your ear rings at your rather conservative family's reunion. I commend him for not wearing the pin, but I'd hardly condemn him for wearing it.

Our elections have become a farce, it is about style over substance, moreover this lapel pin was probably made in China.
