Flag Lapel Pin

Chicago Tribune:

So what is that on Barack Obama's lapel as he speaks at a town meeting in conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's hometown, Cape Girardeau, Mo.?

Why, it's a flag pin!

For the second day in a row, Obama has pinned the Stars and Stripes to his suit lapel. He also wore a flag pin yesterday at an appearance in Charleston, W.Va., in which he spoke about patriotism and veterans issues.

Obama does not typically wear a flag pin on his lapel, in contrast to many politicians who now campaign wearing the symbol. But Obama did wear flag lapel pin briefly last month in Pennsylvania, after he was given one by a disabled veteran.

Critics have targeted his habit of dressing without a flag pin to raise questions about his patriotism.

I've taken a REAL CLOSE LOOK AT OBAMA, I know all about the Tony Rezko house deal, how Rezko and Obama were able to split the parcel with the help of Michelle Obama's position on the Landmarks Commission in Chicago. Rezko's wife then bought the vacant lot for $625,000, the money for the down payment came from a loan to Rezko from a middle-eastern billionaire, who loaned Rezko $3.5 million. Take a look at how Obama won his first primary for State Senate in Chicago, Obama and a team of lawyers went to the Elections Commission and challenged the petitions of the other 3 DEMS on the ballot and got them all removed, including the incumbent, just dirty Chicago-style politics for Obama. And how about all those lies in his book, it should be in the fiction section.

Why is it that we always let the Repubs define patriotism on their own terms, and then we scramble to try to prove that we can conform to their patriotism standards? Why don't we define our own patriotism standards. Like sending 4,000 of our military to their deaths in a war for oil is unpatriotic. How can you be for our troops when you put them in harms way for no reason? And with McCain refusing to sign the GI bill -- really can't get less patriotic than that. How about the patriotism of giving Americans back the American dream instead of tax cuts for the wealthy? We, as Democrats need to start defining the NEW patriotism, and it's NOT a piece of metal on your lapel.

Sorry to break this to you, but HuffPost isn't putting up headlines on Hillary's win because the game is over, and she's lost. The rest of us are now focused on winning the general, try to keep up.

Never count out a Clinton..............They soon call her the come back kid! And rightly so. Those 300 delegates and 2.2 million votes in Michigan and Florida are looking better and better. If she doesn't drop out as the Obama campaign has been pushing since March 1, they will have to re-enfranchise both of those states. I see Obama is going to both next week to try to sooth their anger at him, but they know it is he that prevented a re-vote, Good luck Abaminations ...............they voted for Hillary....

finally, i thought, a story on huffpo about obama claiming yesterday that he'd been to 57 states.

but no.

Dan Quayle misspells potato as potatoe and the NYT and washington post haunt him about it for a decade. Obama wants to lead this country and he thinks it is made up of 59 states -he said he'd been to every one but alaska and hawaii- and you can't find a word of mention here or in any of the mainstream media.

or is that just the answer to why he's suddenly wearing the lapel pin? so he can look down and count the stars?

If she does have a flag pin, she may have "mis-apropriated" it from Wal-Mart when she worked there....and I'm sure it says "made in China" on the back. Or maybe she pawned it to pay off some of her campaign debt? Or maybe she lent it to her running mate McCain, because he ran out of bingo chips and used it to play, and left it on the table? There must be an explanation why she doesn't wear one....surely that couldn't be the reason she was as quiet as a church mouse while Shmeagol asked those redundant, pointless flag pin questions on the ABC debate...right?

What a joke. Are Americans so insecure that they keep talking about a stupid lapel pin? I don't wear a flag lapel pin, and neither did my father.

What we did was to serve our country, my father under MacArthur in the Pacific theater of WWII (while the rest of his family were imprisoned in camps) and I served under Westmoreland in Vietnam.

Now, which do you place more importance on? For all of you who are upset with Obama not wearing a lapel pin, go volunteer to serve in Iraq and Afganistan. That would impress me, but I'd bet most of you who make this an issue haven't done a damned thing for this country except take up space.

A higher standard -- like wearing a piece of metal? How about the standards of sending our troops to a stupid war and putting us in a trillion dollars of debt? How about the standard of our economy in a recession and regular Americans can't afford gas? How about the standard that 8 out of 10 people think this country is going in the wrong direction? Still want to talk about flag pins?

Did you count how many flags he had behind him for the Rev Wright Excuse Speech in Philadelphia?

I think it was because Obama made an issue out of not wearing one before...but he's politician now looking at November...he can't win without going towards the middle even I guess in these smaller matters. You and your Dad have done more for this country than he has, so thank you both.

As an Obama supporter, I have to say I'm disappointed by this apparent pandering. Whatever happened to patriotism being defined by what you do and believe, not what accessory you pin to your clothes? Not to mention that this opens all kinds of questions about how genuine he is, and "flip-flop" accusations. Bad move, Obama campaign..

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:45 PM on 05/13/2008

Yeah, it does make me question -- but not what you're hoping. You have to appeal to the majority of voters. It is obvious why the Obama campaign decided to break out the flag pin. There are too many voters in current contests for whom that is still an issue. But that doesn't mean I like it. And even with that said, he is still vastly preferable to any other candidate (including 3rd-party candidates, who as an independent I often vote for).

Oh pleeze, Obama didn't say that he'd NEVER wear a flag pin again, he said that he stopped wearing it after 9-11 because at the time it was a false symbol of patriotism because of attacking Iraq. Maybe now that he's the Dem nominee, THIS is a REAL symbol of patriotism. I say let him wear the flag pin. And let's all stop talking about a piece of metal, issue people, remember those?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:07 PM on 05/13/2008

I respectfully disagree. It isn't a real symbol of patriotism. It's a prop. And he is verging on changing message in midstream. Campaign strategists have a field day with that stuff.

BIG NEWS, A GUY LOCAL TO ME HAS SOLVED OUR OIL PROBLEM. HE HAS IMPROVED HIS GAS MILEAGE BY 275% WITH AN INVENTION THAT TURNS WATER INTO HYDROGEN RIGHT AT THE CARS INTAKE MANIFOLD. SPREAD THIS AROUND BEFORE MSM AND BIG OIL SQUASH IT.

THIS IS FOR REAL. NOT A SALES PITCH.

'Gas prices push retiree into action

HARTSELLE -- If you are tired of paying $3.50 to $4 per gallon for gasoline, Larry Thrasher wants you to visit him.

He won't be able to lower the cost of gas. But, he said, his generated hydrogen system will increase your miles per gallon and decrease the number of trips you make to the gas station.

After more than a year of research and testing, Thrasher said he has perfected a system that will allow your vehicle to run on hydrogen and gasoline.

Long range, his plan is to run a vehicle on hydrogen only.

Because of the number of electronics in vehicles, he said, his hydrogen system still depends on some gasoline.

Since installing the hydrogen fuel system on his eight-cylinder Cadillac, Thrasher said his fuel efficiency has increased from 19 miles per gallon to 53. His wife's 1996 Toyota gets about 71 miles per gallon.

A former teacher at several technical schools with more than 30 years of automotive experience, Thrasher started researching his system about 16 months ago.
