Rumm

An ongoing exploration of the documents related to the Pentagon's "message force multipliers" program has unearthed a clip of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld suggesting that America, having voted the Democrats back into Congressional power, could benefit from suffering another terrorist attack, and doing so in the presence of the very same military analysts who went on to provide commentary and analysis of the Iraq War.

As documented by Newsvine, it all went down at a valedictory luncheon Rumsfeld hosted for those analysts on December 12, 2006. Many of the "message force multipliers" named in the original New York Times piece were in attendance, including David L. Grange, Donald W. Sheppard, James Marks, Rick Francona, Wayne Downing, and Robert H. Scales, Jr. They were treated to an extraordinary conversation (Newsvine has highlights, the hour-long clip of which can be found here) with Rumsfeld, that included many jaw-dropping moments, such as Rumsfeld admitting that in Iraq, the U.S. "can't lose militarily, but...can't win by military means alone," an agreement that Iraq could use a Syngman Rhee-type dictator (because that's what democracy smells like!), and a lengthy passage where Rumsfeld jokingly offers a bottle of champagne to anyone who could kill Moqtada al Sadr. You sure don't see too many people joking on al Sadr these days!

But by far the most extraordinary part of this luncheon is the antipathy the gathered members exhibit toward the American people for having the temerity to vote the Democrats back into power. When Lt. Gen. Michael DeLong bemoans the lack of "sympathetic ears" on Capitol Hill, Rumsfeld offers that the American people lack "the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats." What's to be done? According to Rumsfeld, "The correction for that, I suppose, is [another] attack."

DELONG: Politically, what are the challenges because you're not going to have a lot of sympathetic ears up there.

RUMSFELD: That's what I was just going to say. This President's pretty much a victim of success. We haven't had an attack in five years. The perception of the threat is so low in this society that it's not surprising that the behavior pattern reflects a low threat assessment. The same thing's in Europe, there's a low threat perception. The correction for that, I suppose, is an attack. And when that happens, then everyone gets energized for another [inaudible] and it's a shame we don't have the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats...the lethality, the carnage, that can be imposed on our society is so real and so present and so serious that you'd think we'd be able to understand it, but as a society, the longer you get away from 9/11, the less...the less...

Less than a week ago, the Department of Defense did a document dump on their program to use retired military analysts as surrogates on network and cable news to pimp the administration line on the Iraq War - something we now know they did on at least 4,500 occasions. Over at TalkingPointsMemo, a thread has been opened for those who want to sift through the material and highlight key discoveries.

So far, dedicated TPM readers have unearthed a number of noteworthy finds, of which this audio recording of this luncheon is perhaps the most astounding.

Rumsfeld certainly did his bit to allow the attacks on 9/11 to go forward. In June, 2001, the Joint Chiefs of Staff changed their hijack procedures, putting all military assistance to the FAA at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense:

"In the event of a hijacking, the NMCC will be notified by the most expeditious
means by the FAA. The NMCC will, with the exception of immediate
responses as authorized by reference d, forward requests for DOD
assistance to the Secretary of Defense for approval." ... http://tinyurl.com/6r7ga6

Oh, is it all right to say 9/11 was an inside job on Huffpo now? What a brave new world for the left wing gatekeepers and 9/11 debunkers.

Next thing you know some of you will be claiming there was a conspiracy to kill Lincoln.

Yes, the bankers went after Lincoln, they hated that he made his own money to fund the war. His murderer even said so.

Uplifting words from Central Casting's zaniest of Nazis, Dangerous-Don Rumsfeld (the cat that gave us Aspartame knowing full well that it had serious carcinogenic properties)!

Surprised?

I have been a very staunch opponent of conspiracy theories, but to hear the man most responsible for stopping foreign threats to American lives musing that a successful attack on the USA is somehow a "cure" for us... it almost makes me want to make a tinfoil hat with the nuts I made fun of.

I still think Rummy and the rest of the Bushies show more incompetence than dark conspiracy, but is there a way to make sure the final judgement of history records that this guy wanted to put the good of his party and the narrow aims of his political clique above the safety of the American people (the latter being his JOB)?

Is there a way a Secretary of defense who openly hopes for a successful enemy attack can be prosecuted for treason? Fortunately for Rumsfeld I suppose this last possibility could only have been explored if his wish had been granted.

I'd rather have a tinfoil hat on my head than have my head stuck in the sand or up some orifice. Are you people ever going to grow up and look at the facts of 911 and the anthrax attacks right after that was linked directly to Fort Detrick. Three modern highrise buildings collapsed, the official reason fire caused it. Never before never since have steel framed buildings collapsed due to fire alone. Building 7 imploded in on itself, a classic controlled demolition yet people will believe known liars before they believe their own eyes. Bush waited 15 months after the 911 Commission was formed to testify and only then when his handler Cheney was allowed to testify with him like two criminals trying to keep their stories straight.. Rumsfield who had the power to cause the first 911 to utter this statement speaks volumes. Before calling more knowledgeable people nuts you better spend some time studying the facts and not repeating Bush propaganda.

zitlight73, you're pissing into the wind. The sheeple will never believe the truth. They spend billions on horror flicks to frighten themselves, but when the real thing comes along, it's just too scary for them to bear. National hysterical blindness. Conspiracy theory - whooo whooo. Half the freaking federal indictments are for conspiracies. Easy to get a conviction.

You are right, but will you get it in to the head of the Blind left and the blind right? NO! they have to have Bush tell them himself before they believe it..or the TV.

What Americans are lacking in is not only "maturity" but the ability to discern facts for themselves, both as individuals and as voting blocs. The level of ignorance, willful or innocent is what allows megalomaniacs such as Rummy to accede to power in the first place. Were there "maturity", or perception, or even a modicum of responsible truth-telling going on amongst those in power, the REAL reason(s) for attacks occuring on our soil might be dissemenated and understood, just a little.
As Gore Vidal once said, Americans have no idea of their own country's mischief in the name of Empire...which is served by the military and the "oil and gas junta" -- the folks who actually run what once was our republic.

Rumsfeld On 2006 Election: "The Correction For That...Is An Attack"

And we all realize how good he is at planning attacks. Why.... if you squint your eyes just so, Iraq looks like a bright garden of peace-n-democracy-n-stability.

So, when someone as incompetent as GWB sh*tcans Rumsfeld, you KNOW he was either too successful (which, I'm sure Rummy believes) or he was a total f*ckup........ which is what we all know.

We are safe for many reasons, but not because you and your nazi sheep-like followers tortured and killed people across the globe. In my opinion you and your kind are the real cowards. Just in case you're reading this Rumsfeld (since you have a lot of free time on your hands), I consider you a fear-mongering, treasonous war criminal who deserves nothing less than life in prison. History will remember you as the most incompetent Defense Secretary ever to hold the office. Like all Bush and Cheney crime family members, your only hope is to confess and to be contrite before you finally become a victim of that thing you love so much - death. You should ask all Americans to forgive you for the damage you created before that reality bites.

Rumsfeld avocating a terrorist attack on America makes him a terrorist. This that witnessed the endorsement are accomplices. All need to be in jail waiting trial.

Im agine for a moment is a non white, unconnected person in this country said the same thing they would be in jail-without a doubt. Picture for a moment a certain Rev Wright advocating that America get attacked again. He was publically lynched for shaming America, not calling for an attack.

That these monsters are out there, living their lives, making their money, sipping their scotch is a bit more than the moral mind can handle. I getr pyhsically ill looking at his pistucre. He is a reminder of the inequality, of the evil that exists in our nation.

Hopegirl:

Rumsfeld was not "advocating a terrorist attack on America". Please read his quotation and the question that preceded it. Rumsfeld was speaking of the apathy on Capitol Hill regarding the War on Terror, and he opined that (obviously) a terror attack on the US would refocus congress toward the threat facing our nation.

What threat? That a few hundred Americans might someday die in an 'unprovoked attack'?
Meanwhile we rain down death and destruction all over the globe while getting 10's of thousands of our soldiers dead or injured for life, all in the name of ...democracy? our idea of 'good living'?

Wake up, fool!

Ramirez,

I'd suggest you spend more time reading about what he has done and less time reading about what he has said. Talk is cheap, and Rumsfeld is extremely biased. The world is a safer place now that he is gone, and it will be even safer once the moron Bush is out of office.

What I read was Rummy wishing for the good ol' days when Republican opinion held sway over everything including common sense. For a comment like this to come out of the hole in in the head of a former defense secretary is nothing short of horrific. I'm beginning to think that maybe this pig had something to do with 9/11.

Ramirez,
No he is not advocating an attack, he's daydreaming (a form of hoping) if there was one, America would go on worshiping Bush as the only leader who can protect us. What really gauls me is that he still thinks he and the Bushbots are best for America. Men like him, Bush, Cheney, Pearle, Feith, Wolfowitz, Rove are traitors to the United States. Maybe you can't accept that or wrap your brain around it because you're ego still wants to believe we're the good guys. Not anymore, at least not at the government level. Bush, Cheney, Rummy have turned the US into something we would have despised only 10 years ago. Why do you suppose he's subject to arrest if he visits a foreign country??? Because the world sees him in a much clearer light than you and they've pronounced him guilty.

Both 9/11 and the anthrax attacks happened on Bush's watch. This "five years since the last attack" b.s. is just a smokescreen.

Katrina happened on Bush's watch too. Bush didn't cause it, of course, but he and Rove turned Louisiana into political chess with their virtual expulsion of voters who weren't friendly to Republicans via their almost non-existent efforts to deal with recovery there.

The American people were not "immature" in putting Democrats back into power. The Democrats are actually far more realistic about what the true threat to America is: Those who attacked us on 9/11, and the threat of not appropriately dealing with internal crises, like Katrina.

Bush promised to nab bin Laden "dead or alive" in 2001 -- what happened with that?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:18 AM on 05/14/2008

I happened on their watch because they wanted it to happen. Bin Laden is already dead. Go on you tube and look up "Bhutto Bin laden DEAD" and wake up to the real world.

Ramirez and Bibbo and Chinasskee

You people really need to go change your diaper, and try...try not to pee yerself yet again. Get a grip folks...you are on the verge of shitting yerselves.
You are RULED by fear. Some die today, some die tomorrow.

We could get hit by a meteor too.

You live, swim, roll in fear and urine and you can't understand why everyone else won't pee themselves right along with you. With your framework, any ass-kicking dictator ready to declare war on the whole world would be fine with you.
Well, we have a democracy to run. You would have every country building ironfences around their entire border because of every imaginable atrocity.

Go sell your urine soaked nightmares somewhere else.

If you are shocked/stunned by these Pentagon revelations you need to grow up. Anyone with half a brain knew this was going on. I must say the Boooz Regime did a good job of hiding it, along with the CorpMedia, and there were no real NewsOrgans devoted to unearthing this stuff....
But it is Fascism 101. You control the presses. You control the message. You sell fear. You call the peace-loving Traitors. You do a false-flag operation so you can act like you were attacked. Basic stuff. And our awake-while-asleep populace didn't have a clue. There was a mathematical, physical absoluteness that this has been going on at all levels of our govt. Don't be surprised.

Ya know Dick man or DickTator...Your way of expressing yourself through scatalogical references speaks volumes as to where you're coming from. The irony is you flaming liberals are exactly what you profess to hate. You talk about facscism then proceed to use facist hate talk to put down a legitimate point of view that has the temerity to oppose your world view. You talk about "selling fear" then proceed to profanely and obnoxiously insult your critics...all aimed at intimidating critics thrrough fear of your response. Where were you when the twin towers fell... no my friend...it really happened and its the "blame the america first" crowd that thinks we have to "understand" the rage of the fanatics rather than fight them. History teaches that weakness in the face of aggression is fatal.Actually most of your post was rather disjointed and hard to follow but the anger and contemp that you live with came through loud and clear.

What's odd about this is Bush pretty much parroted this this week, too. I find that a little bit scary.

I never bought into the 9/11 conspiracy theories, but I'm not so naive that I don't believe there are elements in our government that will turn us to the wolves if it means unlimited power and wealth.
