Rumm

An ongoing exploration of the documents related to the Pentagon's "message force multipliers" program has unearthed a clip of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld suggesting that America, having voted the Democrats back into Congressional power, could benefit from suffering another terrorist attack, and doing so in the presence of the very same military analysts who went on to provide commentary and analysis of the Iraq War.

As documented by Newsvine, it all went down at a valedictory luncheon Rumsfeld hosted for those analysts on December 12, 2006. Many of the "message force multipliers" named in the original New York Times piece were in attendance, including David L. Grange, Donald W. Sheppard, James Marks, Rick Francona, Wayne Downing, and Robert H. Scales, Jr. They were treated to an extraordinary conversation (Newsvine has highlights, the hour-long clip of which can be found here) with Rumsfeld, that included many jaw-dropping moments, such as Rumsfeld admitting that in Iraq, the U.S. "can't lose militarily, but...can't win by military means alone," an agreement that Iraq could use a Syngman Rhee-type dictator (because that's what democracy smells like!), and a lengthy passage where Rumsfeld jokingly offers a bottle of champagne to anyone who could kill Moqtada al Sadr. You sure don't see too many people joking on al Sadr these days!

But by far the most extraordinary part of this luncheon is the antipathy the gathered members exhibit toward the American people for having the temerity to vote the Democrats back into power. When Lt. Gen. Michael DeLong bemoans the lack of "sympathetic ears" on Capitol Hill, Rumsfeld offers that the American people lack "the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats." What's to be done? According to Rumsfeld, "The correction for that, I suppose, is [another] attack."

DELONG: Politically, what are the challenges because you're not going to have a lot of sympathetic ears up there.

RUMSFELD: That's what I was just going to say. This President's pretty much a victim of success. We haven't had an attack in five years. The perception of the threat is so low in this society that it's not surprising that the behavior pattern reflects a low threat assessment. The same thing's in Europe, there's a low threat perception. The correction for that, I suppose, is an attack. And when that happens, then everyone gets energized for another [inaudible] and it's a shame we don't have the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats...the lethality, the carnage, that can be imposed on our society is so real and so present and so serious that you'd think we'd be able to understand it, but as a society, the longer you get away from 9/11, the less...the less...

Less than a week ago, the Department of Defense did a document dump on their program to use retired military analysts as surrogates on network and cable news to pimp the administration line on the Iraq War - something we now know they did on at least 4,500 occasions. Over at TalkingPointsMemo, a thread has been opened for those who want to sift through the material and highlight key discoveries.

So far, dedicated TPM readers have unearthed a number of noteworthy finds, of which this audio recording of this luncheon is perhaps the most astounding.

Hey Rummy - you and your fellow criminals Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith belong in prison.

Thank your lucky stars that the Democrats don't have the backbone to put you and your fellow criminals behind bars forever.

The Democrats preferred to keep their powder dry to get the Presidency and with a Democrat Congress then go after these criminals from the GOP.

"Democrat Congress then go after these criminals from the GOP"

Wow. You're giving a bunch of politicians more credit than they deserve. Once elected they will act like all politicians do. They will follow their own selfish agendas. What makes you think Democrats are that much different than Republicans? You don't think they are salivating at the chance to wield the new power of the presidency created by the Shrub administration?

This is how they keep the one-party system going. By playing on the hopes of the people. It's never going to change until the people demand that the electoral system is changed. You gotta get the foxes out of the hen house before anything will change. That includes Democrat foxes.

I am amazed as I read some of these posts. All this talk about repubs this and repubs that. 9/11 was instigated and how another attack since then has hurt the Bush admin. ARE YOU FREAKIN SERIOUS?
What did Bill Clinton do to instigate all of the attacks against US citizens in the 90's? GROW UP FREAKY PEOPLE. You are starting to scare me.

I don't recall any al Qaeda attack on U.S. soil during the Clinton years.

At least Clinton tried going after bin Laden. Bush just let him go and retreated.

If the republicans want another attack that should be easy enough, they can place the call to bin laden, schedule the attack for the day they run a military exercise for the first time that eerily mimics the nature of the attack and then stand down the armed forces in CONUS so that no one can respond in a timely fashion.. That should do it for them.

I agree with you completely. The terrorists decision not to attack America for several years has hurt the Bush administration. It might be the terrorists are reaping so many advancements world wide they might not get back around to us untill after This president is gone. What a missed opportunity for Bush. He could hardly misdirect our efforts to another resource draining boondoggle if he's out of office. How could he make himself and his his buddies wealthy beyond a sultans dreams if the next president were to actually go after the terrorists.

On one hand I understand he is saying that we, as a body, have lapsed into apathy in terms of our attention to potential threat. Bust as the public does not control nor determine then strategy for preventing or mitigating such threats, the executive branch was supposed to have covered this detail, I do not understand why he omits such crucial details as the Bush administration's negligence in reinforcing security for major US ports, nuclear facilities, water sources, and financing and supporting local law enforcement agencies in surveilling and reporting suspicious activity. Much less the ability of local agencies to appropriately respond to crises. Basically, the only details of Homeland Security that were actually supported and implemented by Bush & Co. entailed spying on Americans and torturing foreigners and Gitmo prisoners. For 6 years they have abandon the core objectives and strategies of their plan, otherwise.

Any comment?

yeah - the administration's negligence on the issues you highlight are simply due to the fact that there is not a real threat. our ports are wide open and always have been and everyone in the world knows it.

the reason there had not been an attack for five years is because one had not been instigated. "the longer you get away from 9/11" -

the more obvious it becomes what really happened.

kardwell:

Rumsfeld was not speaking of "we, as a body" who have lapsed into apathy. He was replying to a question about apathy on Congressional Hill:

"DELONG: Politically, what are the challenges because you're not going to have a lot of sympathetic ears up there. "

I agree with you that the public does not control/determine strategy for national defense. That is the job of the Executive branch (either working with or working despite of Congress.)

All clear, all logical, but unfortunately all lies.

You repubes continually put the cart before the horse. Why do these guys want to attack us? Is it because we've been so magnanimous or is it because we've constantly meddled in their internal and external affairs for decades as if we own the whole fucking planet?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:16 AM on 05/14/2008

What exactly is "all lies". Is it a lie that the threat for attack is real? That we haven't had an attack in five years? That the perception of the threat is so low in this society that it's not surprising that the behavior pattern reflects a low threat assessment? That the American people do not have the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats? Which part is not true? You admit in your post that "these guys want to attack us". You insinuate that we deserve it and that is SICK. "these people" want us dead, period. It wouldnt matter what we do or do not do, they want us dead and they are willing to give up their own lives to achieve it. Not only that, they are willing to strap bombs on children with downs syndrome and sacrifice their lives as well. PLEASE STOP ALL OF YOUR HATING AND LOOK AT THINGS DIFFERENTLY. The public response towards Rummy is both foolish and selfish. He is absolutely correct about the seriousness of the threat and the short memory of the electorate. You think gas prices are high now? He stated in another forum...in reqards to arab mentality...they view weakness as provocative!!! People are angered by the price of the war...but we could be forced to pay much more...imagine a dirty bomb goes off in manhatton... thousands affected with radiation...some die soon, some die weeks later and the rest worry about cancer. Most of manhatton contaminated and will remain uninhabitable for 500yrs. We recieve a warning...unless we abandon the entire middle east expect an attack on another major city every week. Who would continue to work or live in the potential targets.? Our society and economy would unravel. This is the stuff of nightmares...would people accept a military takeover of our govt. from the "weak civilian govt" that allowed this to happen?

People like you scare me more than any Arab terrorist. Rumsfeld has more blood on his hands than Bin laden ever will. The War in Iraq and his totally incompetent handling of it have done nothing to prevent your little ""nightmare" scenario. Absolutely nothing!

How many times does he have to be shown to be completely wrong before you stop listening to him as a credible source?

The right always confuses criticism of horrible policy and incompetent handling of the terror problem with a desire to do nothing. Its not a case of "Do things are way or everybody dies in a nuclear attack" . That is the straw man argument of the ignorant. There are intelligent ways to combat the terror problem that do not involve occupying a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Just because reasonable people are not ready to bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran, does not mean we do not see the "seriousness" of the situation.

That Neo-Con creep he hates Americans more than terrorists, he probable could have stopped 911.
Comments are no different than ideas used by those WWII freaks:

Naturally the common people don't want war . . . but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

And Prescott Bush in the years leading up to WWII had a file entitled the "Hitler Project.," and after WWII, he was accused and tried for providing aid to the enemy (Hitler). As is typical of the Bush crime family, he was not punished for his crimes and went on to become Senator Prescott Bush. Ever wonder why so much of what we are experiencing today is reminscent of the Nazis?

So, maybe Pelosi and Reid could tell me why rumsfeld is still walking the streets a free man. If I were to say, publicly, that what this country needed was another terrorist attack I'd be snatched up and rendered off to Gitmo faster than Pelosi could say ". . . not on the table."

So anyone looking for a career change - I would not recommend microbiology if you're looking for longevity!

As this may be all coincidental...it's still an intriguing story - I wonder why a 20/20 or investigative reporting show has not covered it?

And even stranger....for some strange reason 22 scientists and engineers working on the SDI - Strategic Defense Initiative Wars (Star Wars) initiative have also found the "force" not to be with them...

For an industry that's whining that they are going to lose a large percentage of their workers over the next decade due to retirement - this does not really make for a good recruiting poster...

This is treason, from Rumsfeld and the retired military guys. All of them were bemoaning that Americans hadn't died.

I believe that Bush/Cheney will hit Iran immediately after the election in November. The only difference will be that if McCain is elected, he will be sharing popcorn with the B's while it occurs and cheering them on, while the Dem would have to clean up the mess.

The only thing which shall prevent this is if the military stands up to them, and publicly and loudly RESIGN which will alert the others that they do not agree with the plans. Since we have this example of how little real valor and truthfulness there is among military officers, retired or otherwise, then we should brace for a very, very bad fall and winter.

Speaking of treason, I recommend everyone read this document (pdf format). I don't know how anyone can read it and not conclude treason of the highest order is involved. Note that this document is dated one year prior to the attacks of 9/11. Also note that at the end of this document is the list of all the people (neocons) involved.

"Rebuilding America's Defenses, Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century," A Report of
The Project for the New American Century, September 2000.

". . .we began a project in the spring of 1998 to examine the country’s defense plans and resource requirements. We started from the premise that U.S. military capabilities should be sufficient to
support an American grand strategy committed to building upon this unprecedented opportunity. We did not accept pre-ordained constraints that followed from assumptions about what the country might or might not be willing to expend on its defenses."

Luckily, she will be irrelevant after the elections. Obama will not, I trust, make Ford's error.
And I trust nothing. But Obama knows that doling out pardons will not be a good idea if he plans to serve a second term.

I'm repeating below a comment I made in response to another article because all of the research that I have conducted leads me to conclude that 9/11 was a "false flag" operation that created the circumstances that allowed treasonous individuals to put their plan of global domination into action.
_______________

Why do many people put so much credibility and blind trust in the 9/11 "official" conspiracy theory and dismiss out of hand anything that tends to cast doubt on the truth of the official version? This isn't about politics. This is about truth and justice, right and wrong and bringing the guilty to account for their crimes--it's that simple.

And the bottom line is there are too many discrepancies, inconsistencies and contradictions in the official version, and the ONLY thing resembling an investigation of crimes committed against the American people on 9/11, is the 9/11 Commission Report, which is an absolute farce.

Why did Bush and Cheney refuse to testify UNDER OATH to the Commissioners about 9/11?

We could argue until dooms day which professional experts' scientific conclusions are more valid, but in the process of doing that we get no closer to determining the truth. And the only way there's any possibility of that happening is for people to stand up and demand a new INDEPENDENT investigation into the events of 9/11, by people who have nothing to professionally or personally gain or lose as a result of the outcome of that investigation.
