WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's wave of superdelegate endorsements puts him within reach of the Democratic presidential nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3 _ even if he loses half of the remaining six contests.

The Illinois senator has picked up 26 superdelegates in the past week. At that pace, he will reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination _ 2,025 _ in the next three weeks, when delegates from the remaining primaries are included.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to move the goal posts. She will get that chance May 31 when the Democratic National Committee's rules panel considers proposals to seat the delegates that had been stripped from Florida and Michigan. Those two states violated national party rules by holding their primaries in January and lost their delegates.

"Michigan and Florida are key to it," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said Monday.

Obama picked up four superdelegates Monday, including Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Rep. Tom Allen of Maine.

Allen, a six-term congressman who is running for the Senate, said the time has come for a "graceful end" to the nomination fight.

"I believe the process of reconciliation, the process of unifying this party, should begin sooner rather than later," Allen said. "It should begin in May and not in June."

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates, including endorsements from party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,697, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press. That leaves Obama just 153.5 delegates short of the number needed to win the nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

Story continues below

There are 217 delegates at stake in the six remaining primaries, in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota. Even if Clinton wins most of those delegates, Obama could reach the magic number by the time South Dakota and Montana vote on June 3.

Obama has been careful not to declare himself the nominee prematurely, even as his campaign focuses increasingly on Republican Sen. John McCain. Clinton's campaign, meanwhile, has outlined a strategy for winning the nomination that extends beyond the end of the primaries.

The battle might not last that long.

For Clinton to have a shot, she needs several things to fall her way, including the remaining superdelegates. Obama has claimed more than 80 percent of the superdelegates since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. He now leads in states won, pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses and superdelegate endorsements.

He erased her longtime advantage in superdelegates this weekend and now leads 281-271.5. Some 200 undecided superdelegates remain, with an additional 42 still to be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring. Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention as delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

Clinton desperately needs to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated in a way that greatly benefits her.

"It would be helpful," Wolfson acknowledged.

The Democratic National Committee's rules and bylaws committee voted to strip all the delegates from Florida and Michigan because they violated party rules by holding primaries before Feb. 5. The same panel will consider reinstating them.

Under the votes cast in January, Clinton would have won most of the delegates in both states. However, neither candidate campaigned in either state and Obama had his name removed from the ballot in Michigan.

Reinstating all the delegates and superdelegates would increase the number needed to claim the nomination to 2,209, perhaps extending the campaign. But even under the best scenario for Clinton, Obama would still be left with a lead of about 100 delegates, with fewer than 300 superdelegates left to be claimed.

"We need to do well everywhere," Wolfson said. "Our hope is that superdelegates will look at the results in some of these states and recognize that Senator Clinton would be the best nominee against John McCain."

People need to know that McCain is just another privileged son of a much more accomplished man like Bush II. He is a consummate under achiever who got where he did because of his father and his connections. The following is from Wikipedia.

"McCain had run-ins with higher-ups, and he was disinclined to obey every rule, which contributed to a low class rank (894/899) that he did not aim to improve."

McCain's only claim to fame was being captured and surviving the Hanoi Hilton which is admirable but does not make him qualified to run the country. According to fellow Senators he has never been a big part of actually writing any legislations and knows little about the law and economics.

Obama is far more qualified to be president and a consistent overachiever who has earned every thing he has accomplished through his intelligence, integrity and perseverance .

The question has been "what does Hillary want!!" I'll tell you what she needs .. to be censured by Congress for conduct unbecoming a senator, for blantanly lying about Bosnia, etc.! And mainly for attempting to divide the country with insidious racism!

I've never been a Hillary fan, but I think it's GOOD that she's staying in through WV and Kentucky. If she'd dropped out and then won big in those states - and she would have, it would look really bad for Obama and really work against party unity.

By staying in, she gets to save some face, let those states feel like their voices have been heard, and actually does LESS damage to Obama's inevitable candidacy.

As far as the endgame, I predict there will be another big wave of SD's endorsing Obama after Oregon next Tuesday, and if that doesn't put him over the magic number, it'll just be a matter of time - a few weeks at most - before the remaining few step up, and/or she drops out.

At this point, I completely agree. Since Hillary as well as her supporters are so intent upon EVERY vote counting - which I find laughable since Hillary has been grousing that under Repulican rules, she would already have won the primary, rules that are winner take all and do not count or allocate ANY other votes, so a huge percentage of votes very distinctly do NOT count - then by all means, let her compete to the end, and include WI and FL. While it is completely inappropriate to include FL and WI votes, in my opinion, at least once EVERY vote is counted and Obama is STILL the elected, super, and popular vote winner, then Hillary supporters should have no further arguments, will quit whining and complaining, and will then support Obama as the fairly elected Democratic nominee. RIGHT????

From the posts on the blog the election is in full swing and it's Obama versus McCain. But don't expect trolls to expound on the virtues of McCain. Trolls know that Obama is right on all the issues so they will only resort to personal attacks. Contrary to the trolls I will state the main reasons why I support my candidate.

I'm one of those educated supporters of Obama who has a Masters in Chemistry and pride myself as an analytical thinker. I first favored Edwards but when he dropped out I happily chose Obama over Clinton. I chose Obama after looking at each campaign's websites and mulling over the issues. Both candidates were very similar on the issues so I evaluated which candidate has the best chance to implement their plans. That made my choice clear it was Obama for a few reasons.

First the next president needs to inspire people into action because the last president told us just to keep shopping and did not ask for personal sacrifice save for a select few who are bearing the brunt of our burdens in Iraq. I was particularly please with Obama's call to young people to serve their country in some way for a college education. Obama knows that grass roots supports are not only needed to win campaigns but also is needed to realize a vision for the country.

Fourth Obama has the character to deliver for this country. He is honest and trustworthy, does not continuously pander, is a true patriot not a nationalist (a debate for another day), is extremely intelligent, revers the constitution and all it stands for and is tougher than people think.

Third Obama is a truly strategic thinker. While Bill Clinton governed on the prevailing wind and Bush governed with an ideology frozen in time, Obama will govern for the future. He was right on Iraq and most importantly he is right about the current and future crisis in this country. We have been stuck in a political quagmire for the last few decades. That's why no major accomplishments have been sustainable. The nation needs to move past it's partisan gridlock and rightly Obama realized that is the biggest problem we face today. Obama also realizes that our biggest foreign policy challenge this century is maintaining our economic dominance because economic dominance leads to political and military dominance. Obama said this in his interview with Wolf Blitzer just last week. He said and I paraphrase that if the Chinese continue to increase their economic power their military power soon will follow. Economic experts say that the Chines could pass our GDP as soon as 2020 if the yuan is valued at the rate it should be. McCain on the other hand thinks Islamic militantcy is our biggest challenge of the 21st century. Nothing can be further from the truth. A few thousand militants around the world does not equal an economic power with over a billion people.

Second I could see that Obama was a true post partisan figure not with his words only but with policy. His health care plan is the only plan that has a chance of passing in todays political climate. Republicans in congress will NEVER pass another mandated social plan. Hillary had not learned her lessons on health care like she said she did. Obama's health care plan is the only plan that had a chance. Obama's middle class tax relief also shows he was serious about bridging the partisan divide.

Dr. King once said that most americans are unconscious racists. But, he always told that truth with a hopeful edge. Professor of Georgetown Uni. supports by stating that "the ceiling is off and the possibility is real. We see the possibility of living the creed."

The word is "fathom" not "phantom".

Destruction of a "Dream" is about right ............. that's what all of his speeches amount to -- a big DREAM. Or as Bill said, a "fairy tale." Keep believing this pie in the sky rhetoric, sad part is we're all going down with you.

CHARLESTON, W. VA. (AP) -- Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama picked up two pledged delegates Monday from the official results of the Ohio presidential primary held March 4th.

The Associated Press had withheld the two delegates because of the large number of provisional ballots cast in Ohio on Election Day.

According to the Ohio Secretary of State's office, almost 100,000 provisional ballots were counted.

Obama leads in delegates needed to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, even though he's expected to lose badly tomorrow to rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in West Virginia.

What really worries me is all of the posts I read from Hillary supporters saying that they are not going to vote WHEN Obama wins and may actually vote for McCain.

I ask for one of you to come forward and honestly explain to me how you can, with good concience, vote for Senator McCain when he stands against both Hillary and Obama on every major policy issue? How can you sit by and give another term to the Republicans after what they've done to this Country? I understand that you fought hard to get your candidate elected and supporter her, god knows she has tried her best, but it is time to move on. We have a real chance to turn this country around and it sickens me that some people may actually vote for the next Bush, rather than swallow their pride and take a fantastic alternative to your first choice, which by the way, the majority of American's in this primary have voted for.

Please Please Please vote Obama in 08', don't turn your back on the party and on America!

You know what? I do not care if they vote for Fidel Castro. You live with the consequences of your vote. Wait until McCain introduces the draft to be able to continue his war-mongering. These same folks who are talking all this rubbish about not voting for Obama if their queen, HRC is not coronated will be the same people complaining. The simple truth is that she is not winning the election and arguement. Then, it will be too late to avoid the ship-wreck. I am having fun indeed. For me, I will vote for my future. The only regretable thing about these folks is that they claim to be Democrats. DEMOCRATS INDEED!!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:27 PM on 05/13/2008

Actually, the draft would be a good thing in that it would finally make this war "real" for the rest of America. It would remove the constant excuse by Bush and Cheney of "they volunteered!" to somehow justifiy this illegal war and justify the shitty treatment our veterans are receiving when they return. It is unfortunate that it would take a draft to get America really up in arms, but the "volunteer" nonsense is parroted throughout the meda as well.

Want to see a revolution led by the mothers of this country? Reinstate the draft. This war will end in a month.

This has been a strategy by the Clinton campaign. It was discovered by someone credible that threatening emails originating from her campaign office were forwarded to the superdelegates demanding they vote for Hillary and if they did not that they would all vote for McCain. Her campaign was contacted and as usual she lied. One of the superdelegates found out the emails origin from two workers in the office. They indicated that they were working on them at her campaign office. A superdelegate responded by saying that they had received hundreds of emails from the Obama campaign but not one of his emails resorted to the threat of voting for McCain. He concluded by telling her that she(Hillary) should be ashamed of herself to put people up to such a task. So do not believe the threats. They are intended to arm wrestle the superdelegates to endorse Hillary as she sees she is losing the nomination. I believe that most dems will get behind Obama because no one wants aRepub in again. These are threats to make the delegates endorse her. Three weeks ago she had about 25 dsupers write a threatening letter to Pelosi declaring they would withold money from the party. That did not work. She also pays bloggers to go on sites and make the same threats. Do not believe everything you read here. Go to Huffington Post ; Clinton Supporters Send Last_ditch Obama Attack Emails To Superdelegates. It tells the entire story. Be encouraged.
