WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's wave of superdelegate endorsements puts him within reach of the Democratic presidential nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3 _ even if he loses half of the remaining six contests.

The Illinois senator has picked up 26 superdelegates in the past week. At that pace, he will reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination _ 2,025 _ in the next three weeks, when delegates from the remaining primaries are included.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to move the goal posts. She will get that chance May 31 when the Democratic National Committee's rules panel considers proposals to seat the delegates that had been stripped from Florida and Michigan. Those two states violated national party rules by holding their primaries in January and lost their delegates.

"Michigan and Florida are key to it," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said Monday.

Obama picked up four superdelegates Monday, including Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Rep. Tom Allen of Maine.

Allen, a six-term congressman who is running for the Senate, said the time has come for a "graceful end" to the nomination fight.

"I believe the process of reconciliation, the process of unifying this party, should begin sooner rather than later," Allen said. "It should begin in May and not in June."

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates, including endorsements from party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,697, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press. That leaves Obama just 153.5 delegates short of the number needed to win the nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

There are 217 delegates at stake in the six remaining primaries, in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota. Even if Clinton wins most of those delegates, Obama could reach the magic number by the time South Dakota and Montana vote on June 3.

Obama has been careful not to declare himself the nominee prematurely, even as his campaign focuses increasingly on Republican Sen. John McCain. Clinton's campaign, meanwhile, has outlined a strategy for winning the nomination that extends beyond the end of the primaries.

The battle might not last that long.

For Clinton to have a shot, she needs several things to fall her way, including the remaining superdelegates. Obama has claimed more than 80 percent of the superdelegates since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. He now leads in states won, pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses and superdelegate endorsements.

He erased her longtime advantage in superdelegates this weekend and now leads 281-271.5. Some 200 undecided superdelegates remain, with an additional 42 still to be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring. Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention as delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

Clinton desperately needs to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated in a way that greatly benefits her.

"It would be helpful," Wolfson acknowledged.

The Democratic National Committee's rules and bylaws committee voted to strip all the delegates from Florida and Michigan because they violated party rules by holding primaries before Feb. 5. The same panel will consider reinstating them.

Under the votes cast in January, Clinton would have won most of the delegates in both states. However, neither candidate campaigned in either state and Obama had his name removed from the ballot in Michigan.

Reinstating all the delegates and superdelegates would increase the number needed to claim the nomination to 2,209, perhaps extending the campaign. But even under the best scenario for Clinton, Obama would still be left with a lead of about 100 delegates, with fewer than 300 superdelegates left to be claimed.

"We need to do well everywhere," Wolfson said. "Our hope is that superdelegates will look at the results in some of these states and recognize that Senator Clinton would be the best nominee against John McCain."

Every time McCain blathers about letting the market sort itself out, I just shudder. All the coded message means is he'll let Big Business do what they goddam well want, and it won't be to our benefit, I can tell you that right now.

True. No controls, no oversights, no regulations ... for these such repubs to want such "smaller" gov't. I wonder why they fight so dirty and hard to become another employee of that same government. Forky!

Enron and Bear Stearns comes to mind!

If elected, McCain would be in position to select three Supreme Court judges. Now that's a real scary thought. Bush is a moron, but I'm not sure McCain is far behind.

Although the contest is not officially over, it is clear who has won. The shame of the process has been the decision of the Clinton campaign to go to the kitchen sink strategy, which has detracted from what should have been a more special winter/spring for the Democratic Party.

Imagine the difficult decision most of us would have had to make IF Senator Clinton had defended Barack Obama on the Rev. Wright issue. She would have looked like a leader, it would have magnified a very qualified candidate, it would have raised her stature, and it would not have divided the Party into bitter factions. It was her chance to show us she's a bigger person than her husband, but she chose not to take the noble route. She might have still lost, but eveyone would have had a better taste in their mouths and she would have played a bigger role in the present, and future.

It's a shame. She chose the buzzkill route, and ended up killing her own buzz. It didn't have to be that way. Let's see if she can, for once in her life, be a uniter and not a divider. Let's see if she can silence her critics and do and say the right things. We'll be watching.

Ultimately, Obama had a superior message and senior staff like Axelrod, Burton, and Plouffe. But, Hillary made the decision easier for many of us who were undecided at the outset.

All you have to do is listen to Hillary's stump speeches...try to count the number of times she says "fight". That tells you all you need to know. There's no working together, no reconciliation, no "reaching across the aisle" unless it's to hold hands with that Old Fart, and you know who I mean.

Her day is done, and trying to be a "man", Hillary, don't make you one, I don't care how many shots you toss back.

I agree with you. However, do you know how difficult ti will be for Hillary to step up to the plate for Obama. In essence, she would be saying that everything she did and everything she said in throwing the kitchen sink at Obama was a lie.

That wouldn't be so difficult it was one or two things, but as many as Hillary has thrown at Obama, it is like she dug her hole so damn deep and she wouldn't be able to climb out without a super-duper ladder. And even though Obama would gladly offer her the ladder, I think she would rather remain in the hole than climb out and face Obama and apologize.

Those were sentiments I expressed many weeks ago, I agree.
A leader and knowing the facts that many did not know, like Rev. Wright wasn't the man looped in sound bites, Obama doesn't agree with those statements, or I could understand the bitter comments (I may not have said it that way but, the truth is the Republicans have not looked out for you. She could have been seen as taking the High road.
But,
When she pandered on a McCain introduced gas-tax holiday that were she f-ed up. As you see, not even McCain mentions it anymore.

Your correct. I believe Senator Clinton would still have been in the race if she had not gone Negative. She had a chance to lead in the ABC debate but took the low road as Obama defended her. A President needs to rise above the petty issues and stand up for what is right.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:55 AM on 05/13/2008

The mistakes the Clinton folks have made are ready for a full length movie. The folks who ran the campaign are about as bad as the NeoCons. Lanny Davis? Disgusting, simply terrible human. Bill and his legendary finger? ... he's become a joke as well as a nut case. Now we see how shameful this guy really has been. How about Geraldine the Hateful? The list goes on and on. A circus of freaks using any distraction, racial divide, rumor ... you name it ... whose sole goal was serving Hillary's awesome and endless Ego.

Saying goodbye to the Bushs and the Clintons can only be good for Americans.

The Clintons tried to do to the Democratic Party what Cheney did to the GOP. The Republicans bought the NeoCon line and look where they are today. Thankfully, and to the Democrats credit, the Clintons were soundly rejected are being laughed away quickly now. Hillary almost took down the entire party. Yes, she still has the NeoCons, Limbaugh's dittoheads and the bigots but they were never liberals to begin with.

The idea that Wolfson refers to "Michigan and Florida are key to it" shows that downright cheating does not bother the Clinton Campaign at all. I am so sick of this story, have studied and written plenty about it myself, but the fact that for months the Clintons have talked about MI and FL "counting" should tell everyone how dishonorable, egotistical, selfish and sneaky Mrs. Clinton is. Doesn't the fact that she was the only major candidate on the Democratic ballot in Michigan tell the rest of you anything? Remember she AGREED that the January elections in FL and MI would NOT COUNT. Pure sleaze.
