WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's wave of superdelegate endorsements puts him within reach of the Democratic presidential nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3 _ even if he loses half of the remaining six contests.

The Illinois senator has picked up 26 superdelegates in the past week. At that pace, he will reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination _ 2,025 _ in the next three weeks, when delegates from the remaining primaries are included.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to move the goal posts. She will get that chance May 31 when the Democratic National Committee's rules panel considers proposals to seat the delegates that had been stripped from Florida and Michigan. Those two states violated national party rules by holding their primaries in January and lost their delegates.

"Michigan and Florida are key to it," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said Monday.

Obama picked up four superdelegates Monday, including Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Rep. Tom Allen of Maine.

Allen, a six-term congressman who is running for the Senate, said the time has come for a "graceful end" to the nomination fight.

"I believe the process of reconciliation, the process of unifying this party, should begin sooner rather than later," Allen said. "It should begin in May and not in June."

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates, including endorsements from party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,697, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press. That leaves Obama just 153.5 delegates short of the number needed to win the nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

There are 217 delegates at stake in the six remaining primaries, in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota. Even if Clinton wins most of those delegates, Obama could reach the magic number by the time South Dakota and Montana vote on June 3.

Obama has been careful not to declare himself the nominee prematurely, even as his campaign focuses increasingly on Republican Sen. John McCain. Clinton's campaign, meanwhile, has outlined a strategy for winning the nomination that extends beyond the end of the primaries.

The battle might not last that long.

For Clinton to have a shot, she needs several things to fall her way, including the remaining superdelegates. Obama has claimed more than 80 percent of the superdelegates since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. He now leads in states won, pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses and superdelegate endorsements.

He erased her longtime advantage in superdelegates this weekend and now leads 281-271.5. Some 200 undecided superdelegates remain, with an additional 42 still to be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring. Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention as delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

Clinton desperately needs to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated in a way that greatly benefits her.

"It would be helpful," Wolfson acknowledged.

The Democratic National Committee's rules and bylaws committee voted to strip all the delegates from Florida and Michigan because they violated party rules by holding primaries before Feb. 5. The same panel will consider reinstating them.

Under the votes cast in January, Clinton would have won most of the delegates in both states. However, neither candidate campaigned in either state and Obama had his name removed from the ballot in Michigan.

Reinstating all the delegates and superdelegates would increase the number needed to claim the nomination to 2,209, perhaps extending the campaign. But even under the best scenario for Clinton, Obama would still be left with a lead of about 100 delegates, with fewer than 300 superdelegates left to be claimed.

"We need to do well everywhere," Wolfson said. "Our hope is that superdelegates will look at the results in some of these states and recognize that Senator Clinton would be the best nominee against John McCain."

What you people don't seem to understand is why Obama is winning and why people are relating to him and his character.

Obama is a gentle soul. A really "nice" man with a pleasing personality and very intelligent. He tends to draw people with the same qualities as his. So intelligent, educated, nice, soulful, gentle people are drawn to him and are ready to give him a chance to see what he will do to bring our country together.

Hillary, on the other hand, is absolutely the opposite of Obama. She is crude, unpleasant, shrill, nasty, mean, intelligent to know who her base should be. She has gone for the poor, unintelligent, uneducated, old (stuck in their ways) people all her life. She felt like she had those people in her back pockets because she always made them feel she was there for them (and in essence she was not). She lived richly off her wiles and financial status while her base suffered daily waiting for her to do what she has promised over the years.

Now unless you're weak-minded, love pain, love being lied to, forgetful enough not to remember past promises, or just plain ignorant, you are voting for CHANGE because you know nothing has come from the Clintons that has made your life any better.

Now who are you voting for?

And, Hillary has yet to demand that media cease referring to her beloved base as "uneducated," (ignorant). If she cared at all she'd have done that when it got started. Even I know that one can be economically and educationally "poor" but, rich in spirit at least!

Absolutely correct because I was exactly that and was in her base myself. But she threw me out when I saw her "real" personality come through. I changed in a heart beat. And like you said, she NEVER once stopped the media from saying what she knew was true, to her at least.

To me, frankly, headlines and articles like this are all post-game analysis.
Remaining primaries aside, it has been a done deal for some time now.

Yet another Superdelegate for Obama, this makes number 4.

Superdelegate Anita Bonds, chair of the DC Democratic Party, announced last night that she will endorse Sen. Barack Obama.

So tell me please, what is this business with some posts not having a reply button?
I've had to answer people above their posts on this and another thread.
Did I miss something?

I been wondering the same thing, I assume they limit the amount of replies to ones post to avoid ongoing board wars?

Can't wait to see Hillary campaigning her heart out for Obama, as she said she would.
But am I the only one who suspects that she'll actually be working to undermine him, by dropping a few more of her "He's not a Muslim -- as far as I know" fart bombs?

Obama now has 1,872 delegates. That leaves him 153 delegates away from 2025. The Obama campaign already predicted that they will win 106 of the remaining 217 delegates. If that is the case, Obama is only 47 Superdelegates away from the nomination. (This assumes that he hasn't picked up anymore superdelegates while I was typing this, which I wouldn't bet against).

So, Obama has already won 3 supers, and it is still very early in the day. I get the feeling that Obama is going to roll out more superdelegates today, than pledged delegates Hillary will net in the West Virginia primary.

I have a feeling that might be the plan. A nuanced statement, yes? :)

Any back room deal to squash Obama as the nominee and overrule the will of the people after such a long election will be met with outrage and anarchy! We were screwed in 2000 by the Republicans, if the Democrats do the same Americans will clearly revolt.

It won't be about Obama, it will be about us, some way these elected officials need to learn that this country no more belong to them than BUSH, and after 8 years being bushwacked! "WE ARE MAD AS HELL AND WON'T TAKE IT ANYMORE".

She's not broke. It's just that they have rules NOW that permit only so much in donations for a period of whatever time. She has to follow rules now that weren't there before. She can't have any more SECRET donations made by big wheelers and she's missing that fact very much. It's hard to win and stay honest!

Win the nomination yes, but the election in November ?????? He has got to figure out a way to make peace with Clinton and all the voters she has at her disposal, that number as many as he has.

What might go a long way towards helping making that peace would be if Hillary would find a way to gracefully concede insted of trying to undermine her own party.

West Virginia doesn't matter: even if Hillary won ALL of the remaining state's delegates (which is virtually impossible) she wouldn't have enough delegates to win the nomination. When Obama wins in Oregon and South Dakota, her gains from VW and KY will be virtally nullified. There is no sceario where Hilary reaches the delegate count required for the nomination before Barack Obama does, even if you throw in MI and FL. At this point, her last hope is that her research team can dig up something that will force Obama out of the race, which isn't going to happen.

If Hillary represents all of the "hard working white people", why is her campaign $20 Million in debt?

I agree with you but we have to all calm down and be respectful. I'm not happy with Clinton's behavior but it's time to move on. I think her supporters are smart enough to see how important it will be to come together to stop McCain. Let's starting thinking about our fellow Americans fighting in Iraq and let's stop thinking about our own ego
