WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's wave of superdelegate endorsements puts him within reach of the Democratic presidential nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3 _ even if he loses half of the remaining six contests.

The Illinois senator has picked up 26 superdelegates in the past week. At that pace, he will reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination _ 2,025 _ in the next three weeks, when delegates from the remaining primaries are included.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to move the goal posts. She will get that chance May 31 when the Democratic National Committee's rules panel considers proposals to seat the delegates that had been stripped from Florida and Michigan. Those two states violated national party rules by holding their primaries in January and lost their delegates.

"Michigan and Florida are key to it," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said Monday.

Obama picked up four superdelegates Monday, including Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Rep. Tom Allen of Maine.

Allen, a six-term congressman who is running for the Senate, said the time has come for a "graceful end" to the nomination fight.

"I believe the process of reconciliation, the process of unifying this party, should begin sooner rather than later," Allen said. "It should begin in May and not in June."

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates, including endorsements from party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,697, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press. That leaves Obama just 153.5 delegates short of the number needed to win the nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

Story continues below

There are 217 delegates at stake in the six remaining primaries, in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota. Even if Clinton wins most of those delegates, Obama could reach the magic number by the time South Dakota and Montana vote on June 3.

Obama has been careful not to declare himself the nominee prematurely, even as his campaign focuses increasingly on Republican Sen. John McCain. Clinton's campaign, meanwhile, has outlined a strategy for winning the nomination that extends beyond the end of the primaries.

The battle might not last that long.

For Clinton to have a shot, she needs several things to fall her way, including the remaining superdelegates. Obama has claimed more than 80 percent of the superdelegates since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. He now leads in states won, pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses and superdelegate endorsements.

He erased her longtime advantage in superdelegates this weekend and now leads 281-271.5. Some 200 undecided superdelegates remain, with an additional 42 still to be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring. Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention as delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

Clinton desperately needs to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated in a way that greatly benefits her.

"It would be helpful," Wolfson acknowledged.

The Democratic National Committee's rules and bylaws committee voted to strip all the delegates from Florida and Michigan because they violated party rules by holding primaries before Feb. 5. The same panel will consider reinstating them.

Under the votes cast in January, Clinton would have won most of the delegates in both states. However, neither candidate campaigned in either state and Obama had his name removed from the ballot in Michigan.

Reinstating all the delegates and superdelegates would increase the number needed to claim the nomination to 2,209, perhaps extending the campaign. But even under the best scenario for Clinton, Obama would still be left with a lead of about 100 delegates, with fewer than 300 superdelegates left to be claimed.

"We need to do well everywhere," Wolfson said. "Our hope is that superdelegates will look at the results in some of these states and recognize that Senator Clinton would be the best nominee against John McCain."

On the news this morning, an hysterical woman in West Virginia yelped, "He's Muslim! He's Muslim!" about Obama. Why do people swallow lies so willingly?

WVa is the second-poorest state in the nation (ahead of only Mississippi), and it has fewer minorities than most other states (only 3% blacks). If anybody wants to get a glimpse of the racial hatred there, read "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls.....she describes what happened when she--as a child--= befriended some black children in her sad poor little town.

The saddest part of all is that these people are devoted to a candidate who has already screwed them twice before, once with NAFTA and then again with the failure of her healthcare plan.

Am I the only one who noticed how many of the torturers of Abu Ghraib were from Appalachia? There is a lot of simmering anger there, and it is easy to exploit among the citizens who aren't likely to be information-seekers on their own. Their heads are just waiting to be filled with crapola by racist candidates, and they will vote for them rather than candidates who are seeking social justice...candidates that would REALLY help them.

What could be sadder in a country that claims to be a democracy...to have these people supporting candidates who are bound to screw them and their needs?

Rasmussen has given notice of stopping his tracking of Democratic presidential nomination contest. The Economist has endorsed Obama as the Democratic nominee. The flood of superdelegates proceeds to gather momentum. Warning to the DNC members not declared: Your chance to make a difference will soon expire, so ask yourself why are you dithering at this historic moment. After Oregon, the floodgates will open and the results in June will be superfluous. The contest is over, with respect to Montana, South Dakota and Puerto Rico, but somehow these primaries won't be the determining factor. Puerto Rico does not vote in the Presidential election, and is further east than Maine as well as politically conflicted about its autonomy and independence. Puerto Rico is south of Newfoundland, as is most of the South America, just imagine.

In the last 48 hours I have seen three different political websites plus CNN use the word 'inevitable' in describing Obama's victory, the latest one being Politico. I wish they would stop it. Hillary made this mistake and look what happened. It is just asking for trouble, for when some voters see that word, they rise up---and vote the other candidate. It is just human nature to want to support the underdog. I think CNN would use 'inevitable' on purpose, being biased toward Hillary as they are---but anyway, it's a recipe, if it gets any more widespread, for defeat.

Framing Clinton as the underdog is ludicrous. But I am sure some people will see it that way and perhaps give her the pity vote.

When Clinton was "inevitable" no one had voted and everyone was going on a presumption with not evidence.

We have plenty of evidence. For exhibit A, talk to Chuck Todd at MSNBC.

I don't pretend to be an expert but it would seem that there has been a leader of the party for the last 16 years. That would be Bill Clinton. He has been behind the scenes controlling the party for the past 8 years.
He is responsible for all the weak leaders. Who was the head of the DNC for the 2004 elections? Gee it was Terry McAuliffe what a coincidence.
Its not very complicated. The weakness in the democratic party over the past 8 years has been due to the Clinton's desire to win the election in 2008 and take them back to the White House.
Did Mr. Clinton campaign as strongly for Al Gore as he has for his wife? no
Did Mr. Clinton campaign as strongly for John Kerry as he has for his wife? no
The plan has always been to have HRC serve 6 years in the senate then run for the white house. Everybody knows that.
Would that have been possible if Al Gore had been elected? no. Chances are he would have served 8 years and the his vice president would have had the shoe in for the nomination.
Would that had happened if John Kerry had won the white house? no.
There is a man behind the curtain in the Democratic Party and its Bill Clinton. Just look at who was on the campaign for John Kerry. All Clinton plants.
So i thank God for Howard Dean.
Think about it.

A great article that relates to your point, is 'The Clinton Divorce', from the Wall Street Journal. It's not about their marriage but about their deteriorating relationship with the party they have wielded so much power in. Here's the link:

You can count on two things at this point....

1. Hillary is unequivocally done. FINITO.

2. McCain is going to get bludgeoned to death with the economy, Iraq war, his temper, his age, Hagee, etc.. But those aren't even his biggest problems. What is it, you ask? Simple. It's the (R) next to his name and the fact that he is looked at as the third term of a President with one of the lowest approval ratings in the history of our country.

Sure, Obama has some hurdles, but the biggest and most important thing is that he is a democrat. And despite the rift between Obama & Clinton supporters, there is no way a republican will be in the oval office in 09.

I will let peolple believe that we aren't ready for a black President, right up until Jan 20th, 2009. Then they'll have to find some other ignorant belief to waste their time on. Ready or not, here he comes.....

What? Huffington has been talking for weeks as if Hillary has no chance whatsoever. Now all of a sudden she still has a chance, albeit a slight one? Maybe it's just me---I just got up and so I am still a bit foggy ---but this headline and article has the feel of a rowback. At the very least, it isn't the cocky, Hillary-is-toast type of headline and article Huffington has been running in the past month or so.

On the other hand, maybe someone has reminded Huffington that declaring victory too soon is a fast way to defeat---some people like to vote for the one people are saying has lost, or virtually lost.
So if this IS an ever so slight rowback from those cocky articles, it might show wisdom.

Patience, abby, patience. We don't have to declare anything until August, but as I mentioned to Faxus earlier, it won't matter. There's no need to crow or brag or declare anything--just quietly win, move on and let Senator Clinton's supporters continue their fight as they see fit.

And Michigan and Florida. I'll be glad when I don't have to hear any more spin about "hearing the voices of those voters", or whatever their line is. Meanwhile they've been making the case that most of the states Obama won aren't important, that those voters somehow don't count.

I'll be glad when they're gone because they think we're all idiots.

I'll be glad when we get rid of the electoral college, and we will no longer be held hostage by four states: MI, FL, PA, and OH. Aren't you all sick of those four states running the table? I am. Get rid of the EC, and candidates can start paying attention to smaller states because they will now have to fight for every vote, irrespective of boundaries. The mythology/hysteria that having an EC somehow helps small states is crap. It hurts small states. And any hysteria suggesting that eliminating the EC will cause candidates to simply camp out in CA and TX and never leave should remember that Gore beat Bush in 2000 by less than 600,000 votes. Every vote should count, and with the EC, every vote DOES NOT count. Let's get rid of it! Republicans should support this too, since their guy won by 3 million popular votes in 2004 but nearly lost the election until Ohio decided to fix it for him.
