Highlights from preliminary results of exit polls in the West Virginia Democratic primary on Tuesday. The polls were conducted for The Associated Press and television networks:

___

THE BILL CLINTON FACTOR

Three quarters of Hillary Rodham Clinton voters said Bill Clinton's campaigning was important to their vote. More than half of Barack Obama voters said the former president's campaigning was of little or no importance.

THE REV. WRIGHT FACTOR

Two in 10 voters said Obama shares the views of his fiery former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, "a lot" and three in 10 said Obama shares Wright's views "somewhat." Nearly a quarter said Obama shares Wright's views "not much" and a quarter said the candidate doesn't share his one-time preacher's views at all.

GAS TAX HOLIDAY

Seven in 10 Hillary Clinton voters supported her idea to suspend the federal gas tax for the summer. Obama opposes the plan and a little more than half of his voters called it a bad idea.

ECONOMIC WORRIES

More than six in 10 voters picked the economy from three choices as the most important issue facing the country. About one in five picked the Iraq war.

Clinton voters were more likely than Obama backers to say the economy was hurting their families a lot. Half of Clinton voters said the current recession or economic slowdown has affected them and their families a great deal. About three in 10 Obama voters said the slowdown has affected them a great deal and more than half said it affected them somewhat.

RACE, GENDER AS VOTING FACTORS

One in four Clinton voters and about one in 10 Obama voters said race was an important factor in their vote.

About one in five Clinton voters said gender was an important factor in their vote. Nearly as many Obama voters said that.

CHANGE VS. EXPERIENCE

As in earlier primaries, most Obama voters said the candidate quality that mattered most to their vote was that he can bring about needed change _ a signature of his campaign. A third of Clinton voters cited experience but as many picked change.

UNFAIR CAMPAIGNING

As in other states, West Virginia Democratic primary voters were more likely to accuse Clinton than Obama of unfair campaigning. Even half of Clinton's own voters said she campaigned unfairly, as did three-quarters of Obama backers. Three in 10 Obama voters said their own candidate campaigned unfairly while more than half of them said Clinton hit below the belt.

COMMANDER IN CHIEF

About one in 10 Obama voters acknowledged Clinton as more qualified to be commander in chief. Very few Clinton voters said that of Obama.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE END OF THE NOMINATION FIGHT ...

If they had to choose, seven in 10 voters said they'd prefer that their candidate wins the Democratic presidential nomination, even if the race continues for months. A quarter said they'd prefer the race ends as soon as possible, even if their candidate loses the nomination.

... AND LOOKING AHEAD TO NOVEMBER

Barely a third of Clinton supporters say they'd vote for Obama over John McCain in a November matchup. As many claim they'd vote for Republican John McCain and a quarter said they would not vote for president. If that horse race were Clinton vs. McCain, half of Obama backers say they'd vote for Clinton, about three in 10 say they'd back McCain and the rest would stay home.

DEMOGRAPHIC HIGHLIGHTS

As expected, roughly 95 percent of West Virginia Democratic primary voters were white. Half of voters were from rural areas.

It was one of the oldest electorates among 31 Democratic primaries with exit polls to date, with four in 10 over age 60. The only other states with somewhat similar numbers were Arkansas, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma _ and Hillary Clinton won all four states.

It also was the electorate with the highest proportion _ just about seven in 10 _ of people who lack a college degree thus far this primary season. The same held true for whites without a college degree _ again, historically a strong Clinton group.

Preliminary results from exit polling by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and television networks. Partial samples of 1,016 voters in 30 precincts around in West Virginia; sampling error plus or minus 4 points.

I am confused. One minute Hillary is saying she will work her heart out for whoever is the nominee, the next minute she is wanting to change the math count on the delegates. Donna Brazille says the DNC will declare today that the number is 2025, period---but Hillary wants it higher because she plans to seat Florida and Michigan. Another analyist----this is all on CNN, and I don't know her name, said she spoke with the Clinton camp and was told that this isn't about the party, it's about Hillary. I know I have that verbatim and didn't mishear it. I think they must have been talking about this WV victory--- in context it seemed to be about whether Hillary should get out, given this victory.
Talk about mixed signals---or maybe it's just me?

I don't think she will work her heart out for Obama. Oh, she'll go through the motions, but that'll be about it. Knowing her, she'll probably make cutting remarks about him behind his back and do what she can to undermine him.

Any confusion is quite understandable. All the damn spinning hard to keep up from one second to the next

. I may have to think this has just become not so funny. She was handed an opportunity (again) for some sort of grace. She just spits it right back.

I am so glad you posted that amecdote about the Hillary camp saying it was all about Hillary -they wanted to know she was"alright"-if that was what she wanted to do ,it was fine with them that it was all about Hillary-ANd they didn't care how it appeared!" The CNN reporter who conveyed this wass Suzanne Malveaux_Did you notice her facial expression when she relayed it? Qolf was oblivious to the WEIGHT of this statement_I wasn't and yes,you heard it right and heard it too!

She'll take it to the convention and make sure he can't win. I'm sorry I don't mean this to sounds bitter, but maybe it is. I am so tired of people who don't vote their own economic interests deciding who becomes president. I'm tried of people trying to make me feel bad because I'm educated, because I like cappuccino better then black coffee. I'm NOT an elitist because I think and care passionately about issues that are bigger then a fake tax break. I tired of the pundits talking about how the young and the blacks and the "eggheads" don't matter in this race that is it Joe six pack that will make the difference. I'm tired of being sidelined and called a koolaide drinker. I'm tried of all this and I feel my hope for this country, slipping away.

What's she so proud of winning in WV?
- talk to the people who voted for Obama today in WV.
People stood outside the polling places making nigger jokes all day long, --one kid said he didn't want that black man in the white-house because his momma told him he'd have the white house painted black with pink cadillac cars parked out front. --another person was approached and said you can't vote for that nigger today, he's dead --and on and on and on...

Yes be real proud you captured the hearts of the ignorant.

Yeserie- bob, be very proud to be that part of that American vote

Forgive them Dear Lord for their ignorance and misguidance and help us find a way to ease the racist gap and make a change.

--Yes We Can!!

Everyone hang in there, i don't think the supers will do the wrong thing. Seems to me they may as well do the right thing and let nature takes it course, because if they let Hillary still this nomination and they have a hand in it, she will not win in November.

I wish they would, but their dripping out in meaningless trickles isn't helping it's prolonging it , it's giving her a chance and it's a chance she will use to divide the party further. It gives people a free pass to vote on race to vote on ignorance to ruin all chance we had for change. I'll vote and try to hold on to hope, but right now I don't see any

where there with her, besides Bill was missing, so it wasn't really a victory
speech. It was Hillary trying to look tough and it fooled nobody except her
most ardent supporters.

there will definitely be more bumps on the road and we just need to strap on our seatbelts and hang on to this magnificent ride!!!!!!

thymetwo--that's Clinton's objective.....to wear Sen Obama's supporters down, but we've got to stay just as energized as her camp pretends to be. Believe it or not Sen Obama is strengthen by the zeal and support of his base. Let's not give in to Clinton fatigue, let's continue to press on to Nov and win this election.

I missed it. He is about the only guy worth watching on MSM.

Kieth is the ONLY reason I put MSNBC on and lately now Rachel Maddow has been simulcasting her first hour on the new David Gregory show and she is also now labeled a "Political Analyst" for them. So it is those two that makes me even watch on night like these. I cannot stomach CNN with Wolf and Lou - those people are idiots.

Anyway, he was commenting on how Hillary has complained about about the media has given Obama a free ride and he was pointing out that it is silly to think that because if the roles were reversed Obama would have been chased off the campaign trail - he is correct of course.

TWO IRONIES HAVE EMERGED:

1. the working class people suffering the most are the very ones being solicited to support Clinton's dead campaign- debt

2. She loves to retreat to the woman candidate label while Obama's success is directly related to his ability to distance himself from the black candidate label

West Virginia.... this is the group that was so rabidly Pro-Bush and PRO IRAQ WAR.... I remember the media pumping these dip shits up.... the "Heartland" voters who were so very very important around that time... unlike the educated city slickers on the coast:)!

Let's see, I did see a PBS special about how all the heavy coal mining and leveling of the mountaintops that has been exacerbated under Bush, created poisonous chemicals to leak into their drinking water supply so a lot of them are getting cancer... but hey, Jesus, George and Hillary are their patron saints.... they really deserve what they get as far as I'm concerned.... this is what happens when your life sucks so bad that the only world you can live in is some retarded, halucinary state where you NEED the white guy or in this case gal to screw you over even more than you already are, precisely because they are White and most importantly 'Christian'......

I'm tired of hearing about these Screw-ups!!!!!!!! If they can't grow up, let them live in the hell they so desperately want.... problem is, everyone who is responsible has to live there too.......

Interesting exit poll results that seems a constant bone of contention here
with the Hillary group. 51% of Obama supporters said that they would
vote for Clinton if she were the nominee. By comparison, only 36% of
Clinton supporters would vote for Obama. Tell me again where the
problem within the party is the most divisive?
