Cindy Mccain

Cindy McCain's declaration that she would never produce her tax returns has struck a chord with a few editorial pages around the country. In the past two days, the Washington Post, Washington Times and the New York Observer have all penned demands that Cindy come clean on her fortune.

Yesterday, the Observer lamented the lack of scrutiny cast on the McCain brand, and called for journalists to call for fairness:

Double standards are endemic in American journalism. But Cindy McCain, wife of the Republican presidential candidate, displayed poor taste in flaunting her family's special immunity from press scrutiny. Declaring on NBC's Today that she would "never" release her income tax returns even if she becomes first lady, the Arizona beer heiress showed no concern that she and her husband will have to meet the same tests as other would-be White House occupants--ever.

Today, papers on both side of the aisle responded. The Post declared that the last thing America needs is a president with more secrecy:

For a candidate who puts a premium on transparency and ethics, John McCain has been slow and grudging in releasing tax information. He did not commit to doing so until after he had secured the nomination, and then he disclosed only two years of taxes, far less than his Democratic rivals. Mr. McCain's wife, the heir to a liquor and beer distributorship, declined to release her returns, citing -- as Ms. Heinz Kerry did -- her children's privacy. Releasing tax information entails intrusion, but, as we wrote four years ago, presidential candidates and their spouses "relinquish a significant measure of privacy. Meanwhile, tax returns provide information not contained in financial disclosure forms, such as charitable contributions and the use of tax shelters." For Mrs. McCain to say, as she did on NBC's "Today" show this week, that she would never release her tax returns, not even if she were to become first lady, is unacceptable.

The Times points out that Cindy McCain's privacy argument doesn't carry any weight, since she has used her fortune to benefit her husband's presidential bid:

Moreover, during a crucial period of the Republican nomination contest -- from last August (after Mr. McCain's campaign had collapsed financially) through February (when its remarkable political rebound effectively clinched the Republican nomination) -- Mrs. McCain used accoutrements of her wealth to keep her husband's campaign literally "in the air," traveling from one campaign stop to another.

Many of those photos you saw of Mr. McCain carrying his own luggage through airports during that seven-month period were snapped after he disembarked from the corporate jet owned by the company headed by his wife. According to an exhaustive analysis by the New York Times, Mr. McCain complied with federal law regarding the use of the plane. But he uncharacteristically exploited a massive loophole that the Federal Election Commission has been trying to close. That loophole allowed Mr. McCain to fly relatively inexpensively. The law, whose loophole specifically exempted aircraft owned by a candidate's family or by a company it controls, enabled the campaign to use that jet as a charter plane while paying much cheaper first-class fares and indulge in a subsidy.

Republicans are afraid that Cindy's returns will confirm that she is McCain's sugar daddy.

Doesn't matter if they file separately. If she wants to be first lady she needs to be forthright, honest and show America and the IRS her tax returns. We'll see who the elitist really is.

Honest, she's not .....,just like her non-straight talking husband. The 'elitists' have spoken. Mrs. McCain is a druggie and has serious problems, like being married to the foul-mouthed, flip-flopping Grandpa who has financed his career on his wife's money. Is that who we want to elect for President. I don't think so.

Well if she is going to skip one maybe it could be America. So is that a good compromise? She will show the IRS but not America. Sounds reasonable?

What makes these pompous, self-important, newspaper people believe they are entitled to see a private citizen's tax records? Rationalizing it by saying that the American people have the right to know is ridiculous. They want the opportunity to pick it apart and look through someone else's things to satisfy their nosey, tiny little minds. They're in a pissing contest with Mrs. McCain because she had the audacity to say she wasn't going to answer to them. That ALWAYS angers the MSM. They have an inflated sense of importance and continually look for ways to fuel the myth that they are needed and relevant.

We are not just talking about someone who contributed some money to his campaign, this is his wife. It can be safely assumed that he has a large influence on how she spends her money and thus it is expected she be transparent with her financial income for the very same reasons it is expected McCain and the other candidates reveal their tax information. If we are to believe Hillary as to the extent of influence a First Lady has upon what happens policy-wise in the White House, then I want the wives of candidates equally bound to transparency. Especially one whose bank account a presidential candidate drinks so liberaly from.

Let's see those tax returns. Or let's hear what makes the McCains more special than anyone else who ever ran for president.

Mr. McCain what do you think about your wifes refusal to release her tax returns?

"Well I told the C**t it goes against everything I stand for as for as full disclosure and transparency, if that trollip ruins my bid to become WAR CZAR of the world I will kick her ass"

Keep up the pressure. We need to cross post at Conservative Blog Sites. Maybe someone can post this article over at TownHall or the other Conservative Blogs. We need to take our issues and represent on those sites also.

In Cindy's world, she is right. In her social circles, I am sure that the priorities are (1) Money (2) Party (3) Country. One needs money to go to the GO Party and the country is only worthwhile if their party is in charge.

Cindy McCain is the real out of touch, condescending elitist not Obama. The MSM needs to keep the heat on Cindy and John regarding this issue.

We accept that she's a private citizen who files taxes separately from her husband. However, as soon as she helped her husband's presidential bid on anything other than a strictly commercial basis, her taxes ceased to be a private affair. There is incontrovertible evidence that this assistance has been repeatedly forthcoming.

We expect the same level of disclosure from her.
It's not that complicated really.

Every Newspaper and Media outlet in the Country should make this request/Demand front and center. You cannot be the wife of a potential candidate for President and think that your income is separate but equal, therefore, hide it from the public because you don't want the public to know just how RICH you are because you know that will not sit well with Voters.

Time for The Straight Talk Express that keeps loosing its wheels to come clean. We know they are BILLIONAIRES-------------------------So fess up! Sen. McCain constantly says he's the truth telling guy well it's time to stand up and Face The Music!

Your argument is exactly why Cindy McCain should NOT have to reveal her tax returns. She does not have to reveal her tax returns to placate the great unwashed liberal masses who believe that America owes them a living. She has decided not to show her tax returns because it's nobody's damned business. NOT because she doesn't want the voters to know how wealthy she is. But, that's just like a knee-jerk, socialistic, liberal. The wealthy are automatically suspect and bad simply because they have money. Welcome to the United States bud! It's all about the cash here. Please don't tell me you thought otherwise...

She's certainly helped him out with more than $2,300 worth of help and she has the right to. But there must be some transparency about this.

As far as becoming First Lady it doesn't matter what the FEC agrees to, the voters will make that decision!
