Cindy Mccain

Cindy McCain's declaration that she would never produce her tax returns has struck a chord with a few editorial pages around the country. In the past two days, the Washington Post, Washington Times and the New York Observer have all penned demands that Cindy come clean on her fortune.

Yesterday, the Observer lamented the lack of scrutiny cast on the McCain brand, and called for journalists to call for fairness:

Double standards are endemic in American journalism. But Cindy McCain, wife of the Republican presidential candidate, displayed poor taste in flaunting her family's special immunity from press scrutiny. Declaring on NBC's Today that she would "never" release her income tax returns even if she becomes first lady, the Arizona beer heiress showed no concern that she and her husband will have to meet the same tests as other would-be White House occupants--ever.

Today, papers on both side of the aisle responded. The Post declared that the last thing America needs is a president with more secrecy:

For a candidate who puts a premium on transparency and ethics, John McCain has been slow and grudging in releasing tax information. He did not commit to doing so until after he had secured the nomination, and then he disclosed only two years of taxes, far less than his Democratic rivals. Mr. McCain's wife, the heir to a liquor and beer distributorship, declined to release her returns, citing -- as Ms. Heinz Kerry did -- her children's privacy. Releasing tax information entails intrusion, but, as we wrote four years ago, presidential candidates and their spouses "relinquish a significant measure of privacy. Meanwhile, tax returns provide information not contained in financial disclosure forms, such as charitable contributions and the use of tax shelters." For Mrs. McCain to say, as she did on NBC's "Today" show this week, that she would never release her tax returns, not even if she were to become first lady, is unacceptable.

The Times points out that Cindy McCain's privacy argument doesn't carry any weight, since she has used her fortune to benefit her husband's presidential bid:

Moreover, during a crucial period of the Republican nomination contest -- from last August (after Mr. McCain's campaign had collapsed financially) through February (when its remarkable political rebound effectively clinched the Republican nomination) -- Mrs. McCain used accoutrements of her wealth to keep her husband's campaign literally "in the air," traveling from one campaign stop to another.

Many of those photos you saw of Mr. McCain carrying his own luggage through airports during that seven-month period were snapped after he disembarked from the corporate jet owned by the company headed by his wife. According to an exhaustive analysis by the New York Times, Mr. McCain complied with federal law regarding the use of the plane. But he uncharacteristically exploited a massive loophole that the Federal Election Commission has been trying to close. That loophole allowed Mr. McCain to fly relatively inexpensively. The law, whose loophole specifically exempted aircraft owned by a candidate's family or by a company it controls, enabled the campaign to use that jet as a charter plane while paying much cheaper first-class fares and indulge in a subsidy.

It's simple...If she is going to be living in the White House (our house), then she is going to be a public figure. If she wants to live in our house she has to follow our rules. Basically we want to be sure she can pay the rent! Now of course she can, but she has to prove it.

Oh and this argument about her childrens safety is bulls***. The same children that will get 24 hour secret service protection? That will probably live in the White House. Protection for his son, the Marine that's in Iraq!!!??? The daughter out on the campaign trail with them?

Good for her. It's her money. She is not running, and yes she is rich, That used to be a positive thing.

If it bothers you immensely then don't vote for her husband.

You got one thing - I most certainly won't be voting for her husband.

Being rich has never been a positive thing for a politician OR his spouse, especially one who is trying to be a populist. Kinda throws water in the face of the whole "I feel your pain" mantra the McCains and their ilk keep spouting. And I'm not sure what state you live in, but prenup or not, it is NOT "her" money - it's their money, evidenced by the fact that he has clearly benefitted from that wealth. Both Dem candidates saw fit to release joint returns, so what is she hiding? Wake up!

Actually she is running for a position, the position of First Lady. If Hillary is to be believed, that role carries with it a good amount of influence.

Has McCain released his medical records for this year, yet? All of them? If not , that's significantly more important that the money trail. Or maybe not.

Wow. How slow is the traditional media? Their arguments were floated around the blogosphere within hours of Empress Cindy's casual statement of loathing and disregard for the peons of America.

this goes to the heart of john McCain's so called claim of being a reformist and all that other bull crap, yet he plays around with campaign finance laws and the most basic request, which is to have his wife release her tax returns so that we know where the money used to fund his campaing is coming from has been rejected

look at it this way. if nixon were still the president and mccain was on his enemies list, the irs would be all over hensley to see if they declared the income mccain paid to use the jet or did they show a loss because it cost more to use it than he paid. either way cindy needs to show that the family has the ethics to be the first family.

The parameters were set by Teresa Heinz Kerry who never did reveal her entire financial empire. Instead her peeps released a two page abridged form that showed that she paid taxes and that a large portion of it came from munincipal type holdings. THAT'S IT! There was no transparency. No names of any stocks she or her myriad of trusts owns. No mention of any of her children's trust that she probably controls. No mention of any Heinze jets that she was allowed to use. Nor Heinz apartments worldwide. No divulging the extent of the Heinze 57 fortune, which runs into the billions as compared to Cindy's meager beer barrel holdings which are in the 100 million range.

The McCain's wealth is not community property. She has never revealed it. They have never paid joint taxes. Any wealth is her individual and her own private property. The final arbritrer of all financial matters the IRS has never prosecuted her nor any of her advisors. There has been no fraud. The Hensley Trust allows workers of the company to sit and help guide where the charitable donations will be made. At best, Cindy McCain should and probably will only divulge that she has indeed paid taxes. Just like Teresa Heinz Kerry did.

Thank God Teresa was not the First Lady. When she talked about "my husband", she meant the dead one.

Unfortunately she still does, and that's kinda eerie. I wonder how Mr. Kerry feels about that?

One slight technical thingy here... she wasn't First Lady!!!

I just realized - she knows her hubby is gonna lose.

That is why she can say that.

Of course.

LOSERS don't have to tell all.

WINNERS have to tell all!!!!!!

ROFLMAO - OK - She is right. She will never have to tell all. She is one smart lady already aware that her husband is a loser. Good going girl.

Don't forget all - vote.

I think the important story missed here is McCain's use of that loophole to save money on the flights on her jet. He followed the rules, but should hold himself to a higher standard than the rules, which include this loophole. And unless her tax returns will reveal that she is engaged in business that is damaging to the US, why should we care?
