A palpable sense of doom has set in among Republican rank and file as the party begins to lick its wounds from last night's defeat in a special Mississippi congressional election. The loss, which was the GOP's third straight in what had been reliably Republican districts, spurned talks of even greater, historical setbacks in the fall.

"This is 1994 all over again," Frank Luntz, a famed Republican communications consultant, told The Huffington Post. "I was there. I saw it firsthand. The Republicans of 2008 are behaving exactly like the Democrats of '94 and making exactly the same mistakes. It's pathetic."

Indeed, even the leadership team responsible for shepherding the GOP's election efforts acknowledged that the party's political vital signs were depressing. Rep. Tom Cole, who heads the National Republican Congressional Committee, didn't bother to try and put a good spin on the loss in Mississippi -- where Democrat Travis Childers won with an eight percent margin in a district that Bush carried by 25 percent in 2004.

"We are disappointed in tonight's election results. Though the NRCC, RNC and Mississippi Republicans made a major effort to retain this seat, we came up short," Cole said in a statement. "I encourage all Republican candidates, whether incumbents or challengers, to take stock of their campaigns and position themselves for challenging campaigns this fall by building the financial resources and grassroots networks that offer them the opportunity and ability to communicate, energize and turn out voters this election."

For good measure, talk immediately flared, following the election returns, of the possibility of a Republican leadership shakeup, with Rep. John Boehner -- the House Minority Leader -- and Cole taking the fall. No firings or resignations occurred on Wednesday, but a meeting among GOP members commenced early in the morning with Rep. Tom Davis, a former NRCC head, offering a 20-page memo to shore up the party's hopes.

And yet, some Republican officials are concerned that Washington may bring more harm than help for the down ticket candidates

"Really the mistake they have made is to nationalize these elections when the national image is poisonous for Republicans right now," explained Craig Shirley, a Republican strategist with Shirley Bannister Public Relations. "What they should do is focus on local affairs. When you are sending in big time politicians from Washington and cater to the national media, you are reminding people why they are upset with the Republican Party in the first place."

Indeed, the GOP was hardly fighting the Mississippi battle with one hand tied behind its back. As a diarist on the Daily Kos noted, the party had a serviceable candidate in Greg Davis; the NRCC spent $1.3 million on the race, with Independent groups spending even more; national figures such as Mike Huckabee and Dick Cheney made cameos; and the GOP tried as best it could to tie Childers to the "liberalism" of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Barack Obama.

And yet, victory remained elusive. This was the third special election in as many months in which the Democrats have grabbed a traditionally Republican seat. In March, Bill Foster beat Jim Oberweis -- a Republican endorsed by Sen. John McCain -- to take over former Speaker Dennis Hastert's old seat. Earlier in May, Louisiana Democrat Donald Cazayoux won over a heavily Republican district despite big spending from the GOP.

"This is as bad as I can remember since post Watergate," said Shirley. "It was so bad in 1974 after Gerald Ford was nominated for Vice President that there was a special election for his congressional district, which had been Republican since the civil war, and it went Democratic... The fact is that these are comparable races. These are all three seats that have been in GOP hands for a long, long time... Ultimately voters want to know what a politician is going to do for them. What has happened with the Republican Party over the last eight years is that some of the consultants have decided it is too hard to define what we stand for so we are just going to paint Democrats as worse than us."

A palpable sense of doom has set in among Republican rank and file as the party begins to lick its wounds from last night's defeat in a special Mississippi congressional election. The loss, which was ...

When you enable the worst administration ever

and never challenge their fascist ways with all

the spying, the torture, war crimes and treason,

do you expect accolades, cheers and flowers?

America will never forgive or forget your faults.

Instead of protecting the constitution, you stole

from US and protected perverts and cowards!!

Take a gander at this:

I realize that there are matters of degree at work in these things, but holy shinola, it sure sounds a lot like the USA under Shrub and Darth.

I agree whole-heartedly with your sentiment, but we aren't talking about only an administration here. The fight between left and right, liberal and conservative, Democrat and Republican is a game we are being sucked into playing. Congress as a whole was complicit. The real fight, the struggle that is happening is between liberty and authoritarianism. Elements of what was once considered liberal is now conservative and the reverse is also true. If one central core of our Republic exists, it must be labeled liberty. Our individual rights are continually under attack from what is described as the left and the right when in reality there is little difference between the two. From which side of the aisle it appears, it really is globalist authoritarianism. I realize there are people on both sides that are not the norm (Kucinich, Paul come to mind) but they are the minority. A sad state of affairs really. I can only hope that Obama is different enough but I am skeptical.

You can blame PROGRESSIVE RADIO and PROGRESSIVE BLOGS for the GOP tailspin. When you talk back to the GOP they can't handle it cause they are used to yelling and getting their way. It's a new day

Bullcookies Brunt. The GOP is in a tailspin because of their historic levels of corruption and incompetence these last 14 years.

The Republicans have been quite honest about their program in recent years - they are the party of the rich and the war profiteers. They represent the interests of the most prosperous 5% of the population, and have nothing but contempt for the interests of the poor and the beleagured middle class. They have attempted a vicious con game by trying to convince big blocs of the electorate to vote against their own interests. This has all too often succeeded in the past. Seven plus years of George Bush have stripped away the veneer, and massive portions of the electorate now see how greedy and selfish the rich Republicans really are. Good riddance to reign of the party of unbridled greed.

The GOP has been the party of rich for generations. In 1964, conservative thinkers concluded they could never win a national election running on true conservative issues since they so clearly favor the rich. The GOP survived for two generations on wedge issues, and, as long as their divide and conquer strategy was successful they won national elections. What the GOP didn't anticipate was having to compete anchored to a total scuzbucket as president, with an unwinnable war and a shitty economy hangings around their necks. And how do this bastions of the people respond? Business as usual...The truly sad and scary thing is the this economy is going to get much worse. While Democrats certainly deserve their share or criticism for our myriad problems, Republicans will justifiably receive the majority of the scorn. McCain represents a sacrificial lamb but he won't go down alone.

I think we all smell blood in the water. I'm sorry it's at the expense of all of us, and probably the next generation to clean this mess up. If we can hold at least some of them responsible, that would be a start. Tar and Feathers was a tried and true method to shame politicians. I say let's resurrect a time-honored tradition.

The Republican Party has always been of the Rich, by the Rich and for the Rich. All the pandering to Red Necks and Fundamentalist nut jobs has been nothing but vote grubbing. You think Limbaugh would allow any of his trailer-trash listeners on his lawn, much less in his mansion? Do you think Hannity or O'Reily have anything but contempt for bible thumpers? Chimpy and Cheney have had one mission over the past 8 years - pump taxpayer money into their buddie's pockets.

When Republicans had the White House and Congress, they focused their real accomplishments on making the Rich Richer. Who's profitted from the Bush years? Exxon, Halliburton, Boeing, Blackwater, Wallstreet. Where did the money come from? The poor, the middle class. What are we left with? $4 Gas, Trillion Dollar War, dead and maimed soldiers, falling wages, stagnant salaries, jobs going to India, Mexico, everywhere but here. Our schools suck, our roads suck but hey, the Rich got Richer. They are safe and insolated in their mansions while the rest of us worry about paying medical bills and keeping our jobs.

Yep, your damned right its all about Class warfare. And it's time the MIddle Class got off the ropes and threw a few punches. Dump republican's this Fall. Dump the Liebermann Democrats. Then hold the Democrats' feet to the fire - universal healthcare, re-tax corporations and the rich. Invest in Oil Independence so we can tell Exxon, Saudi Arabia and Iran to go f*ck themselves.

Right on!

What made America great was that everyone paid their fair share, and we all benefit from the contribution everyone makes to the welfare of the COMMON wealth.

We had a fairly just judicial system. Laws were for EveryONE.

If you want to see where America is headed under Republican leadership, go to some third world shit hole and see what utter and complete corruption and concentrated wealth produces. Two classes, the rich and the poor.

If you hear a Republican talking about helping the less fortunate

They are lying

The RNCC continues to make a very stupid mistake in all three of these elections.

They tried to paint the Democratic Candidate as a proxy of Obama and Pelosi.

But if the Democratic Candidate is a proxy of Obamy and Pelosi then the Republican Candidate must be a proxy for...George Bush.

They should have just stuck to the issues. It was the issues that made these Republican Districts in the first place, and in general people's opinions about the issues haven't changed that broadly.

I listen to Sean Hannity & Rush quite a bit and it's clear they are struggling. They have absolutely NOTHING positive to say on behalf of the Republican party. Hannity (when he's not droning on about William Ayers) keeps invoking Reagan's name (as if that will somehow remove the stain of the last 8 years), and Limbaugh is doing his best to usurp Obama's message of hope and asking his listeners to remember what it is that they love about the country.

They have both been rendered completely impotent by the very party members who's water they've faithfully carried for years. Their only remaining option for them is to go completely 100% negative at Obama - - and the three recent special elections that have gone down in heavy-duty Republican districts have proven that even that isn't working. Which is absolutely fantastic!

I just hope that when the Democrats step into Washington after the bloodbath, that they will have LEARNED from what the Republicans have experienced and that they will not fall into the easy trap of being cocky and arrogant - but instead will lead with humility and honesty and conviction.

I'm putting my faith in Barack Obama to be that sort of leader.

"What has happened with the Republican Party over the last eight years is that some of the consultants have decided it is too hard to define what we stand for so we are just going to paint Democrats as worse than us."

The repubs continue to get it wrong due to their ongoing arrogance. Over that past 7-8 years it has become abundantly clear what the republicans stand for. They had the WH and they had congress and they ran down the path of corruption, greed, and pushed for unilateral control. They spoke of compassionate conservatism that only pampered their already rich buddies. They spoke of economic control and blew a surplus in to one of the worst deficits ever. They manipulated the country into a war with piss poor planning and no clear path to win. on and on...

No, it is not that the voters don't understand who the republicans are, it is that they DO understand.

A propos of nothing --I heard a pretty amazing piece on one of my favorite radio shows, this past week, the Ed Schutz Show (on 1260 AM locally in D.C. noon to 3 p.m.). It was entitled "If I were a terrorist and I wanted to destroy the American way of life.
I wouldn't use planes and bombs to kill folks. Could get caught or killed or both. Real terrorists might result. What I would do would be --
I'd foreclose on millions of homes, kick them out of their homes.
I'd devalue the dollar so that prices would rise.
I'd outsource jobs so that people couldn't find work
I'd move factories to foreign countries so that good-paying factory jobs would be gone.
I'd make education unaffordable. Terrorists don't like educated people.
I would make health care difficult to get, and let insurance companies get away with murder.
I'd listen to phone calls and monitor emails and use the information to really stick it to them.
And I'd get a big old tax cut for me and sit back in luxury and watch them fight for the crumbs.
But, praise Jesus, we live in the United States of America, and we wouldn't let them get away with that, would we? "

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:53 PM on 05/14/2008

I would add these also:

I would invade and occupy an oil soaked foreign country that had nothing to do with 9-11 nor any weapons of mass destruction, by way of lies, so as to deplete America of any real National Guard and to demoralize the military for years to come.

I would give non-bidding contracts to well connected buddies and make the war profiteers wealthy beyond anyone's dream.

I would finance that 'war' by borrowing from Communist China until America was totally bankrupt.

Well you also need to stack the courts in favor of big businesses and against the consumers or employees.

And Democrats don't have a single plan that would stop any of the above, and many times make it worse. The cost of Federal regulation on business forces them out of the country. George Soros is funding Democrats, but avoids taxes by operating most of his monetary business off shore.
