Love Guru

"The Love Guru" has not received a warm welcome from some Hindu groups, who reportedly have requested that India's Central Board of Film Certification and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ban screenings of the Mike Myers comedy in India.

In March, U.S.-based Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed was one of the first to protest the film when he said it "appears to be lampooning Hinduism."

Media reports Tuesday quoted Bhavna Shinde, a representative of Mumbai-based Hindu organization Janjagruti Samiti and Sanatan Society for Scientific Spirituality as saying that the censor board should "stop distributing or screening the movie till Paramount has made necessary changes ... so that it will not hurt the feelings of the worldwide spiritual and Hindu community."

It's another Mike Myers spoof movie. Not to worry, nobody who watches it is going to seriously connect Hinduism to Mike Myers!

Just think: loudly protesting his movie might have the OPPOSITE effect, and tourism to India to see the *real* Hindu gurus might increase.

You need to grow a thicker skin rather than worry, whine or complain about Mike Meyers making a comedy or that anything should be banned.

All must respect Hinduism. I agree with Rajan.
Hinduism teaches most scientific virtue of
human behavior--vegetarian diet and non-violence.

Every single religion deserves to be lampooned, and none deserve to be taken so seriously it can't be. For that is when the seeds of hatred are sown.

Many religions usurp the "scientific" claim to fame and ignore the fact that science is a naturalistic discipline that contradicts every supernatural religion. There is nothing scientific about hinduism or islam or christianity etc.
How about you stop claiming hinduism is scientific and I won't claim biochemistry is a religion? Disagree? Well, gimme my tax $ back, holy one.

Tariq - Just in case your comment isn't meant to drip with sarcasm, thousands of years have gone by since the founding of Hinduism, which has allowed the Brahmin priests to totally screw up the original message, and brother, they certainly have!!!!

The very idea of Hindu Fundamentalists is absurd, but there it is. How pathetic. Anyway, Hindu priests have been ripping off people for thousands of years. Instead of working for a living, these slackers perform a few ceremonies and receive at least three hots and a cot, if not more. It's a rip-off. Not different really from Western Priests, Rabbis and Islamic mullahs.

No big surprise here. When I saw the trailer I remember thinking- how is this not going to be seen as racist and offensive to many, many people?
Sure, self-help gurus need lampooning in the worst way, but why did it have to be done with the cheesy Mararishi getup and the insulting fake Indian accent?

Its ironic when free-speech is curtailed in the name of tolerance. We all remember the muslim prophet cartoons that caused such an uproar and how the "free-press" was cowed by the arrogance of the fundamentalists. This is a trend that religions have adopted- act real mad and the fundamental values of free society will be changed.
