Obama Calls Reporter 'Sweetie' In Michigan

Barack Obama passed off a reporter today in Michigan, and she seemed less than amused by his name for her.

"Hold on one second there, sweetie," he says.

The reporter signed off: "This sweetie never did get an answer to that question."

I agree with your earlier post. It is dismissive and it is arogance. I was not really sure which candidate I was ready to support for all sorts of reasons. I am getting numb listening to the pundits and surrogates blather about every little thing. But now I am thinking that the little things DO matter... this was arrogance. Hillary is not getting the coverage and 'ohh ahhh' moments for being the first woman candidate to be taken seriously. I find that amazing. Guess women under 50 don't have the point of reference of having to comabat the 'sweetie' comments that used to happen in a negative, condescending manner. Overall that is positive, but the coverage ,adulation and fawning seem so one sided. Oh well.

For a man who has a close relationship with his wife and two daughters, the word "sweetie" is one that is always close on the tip of the tongue and does not carry the "insulting" factor as you perceive it.

There is "sweetie" in a leering "sexual" way and there is "sweetie" in an affectiona­te/friendl­y" way ... kinda like how he would say it to his daughters.

I suppose it would depend on who said it and in what context. Personally, I don't find it offensive and I do think it's a term of endearment. My mom uses "sweetie" all the time and never as a "dismissal". I do believe some people take offense at the slightest of words.

I was raised in the South were the term sweetie and baby are constantly used. Even when I go on business trip today, I still get called sweetie and baby. Does that make all southern female who use this term sexist. I think not. It make me feel good. I see this as another atempt by Clinton Supporters to start a non-existent controversy.
