Naral

The endorsement of Barack Obama by the nation's foremost abortion-rights advocacy group is causing major fissures and backlash within the women's rights community.

Hours after Obama received the support of NARAL's Political Action Committee, the organization's Washington branch felt compelled to announce its continued neutrality and disappointment with the endorsement.

"We strongly disagree with NARAL Pro-Choice America's decision to endorse at this time," a press release from the group read. "To endorse Obama at this point in the race is an unconscionable slap in the face to Senator Hillary Clinton."

They weren't alone. In a hastily announced meeting late Wednesday night, several of Clinton's most high-profile female supporters lashed out against NARAL's PAC calling it "a betrayal," and "extremely unnecessary,"

"We feel abandoned by this organization today," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Elizabeth Malcolm, the head of Emily's List, called the move "disrespectful" to Sen. Clinton, "who held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade - to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process. It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them."

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Martha Burke, the former chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations, said she was "disappointed and think they are wrong. It feels like they are abandoning a known ally for a less committed candidate because they want to jump on a bandwagon. I think the pro-choice community should stick by a woman who has stuck by them."

And in a phone conversation, Marcia Pappas, the head of National Organization of Women, New York -- who famously accused Ted Kennedy for betraying women by endorsing Obama -- would not even commit to supporting the Illinois Democrat in the general election.

"It is disappointing that an organization that stands up for the rights of women would rush to this type of judgment, especially when we only have three weeks left. And I would wonder what criteria they used to make that judgment, based on the fact that [Obama] chose seven times to vote present," she said. "We certainly know that John McCain is not good on women's rights and we hope that Barack Obama is better on it, but it remains to be seen when we have a candidate who did not stand firm when he could have done so. "

Combined, the blowback from NARAL's endorsement is enough to suggest that Obama, should he become the nominee, may face future political hurdles when reaching out to the women's rights movement. But his record, compared to both Clinton and McCain, is strong on the group's issues. He has received three straight perfect ratings in NARAL's congressional record, has consistently supported a pro-choice platform, and his seven "present" votes (which Pappas cites) in the Illinois Senate were driven, he says, by legislative strategy rather than policy disagreements. As NARAL's president, Nancy Keenan, wrote on the Huffington Post:

"Sen. Obama has been a strong advocate for a woman's right to choose throughout his career in public service. Since joining the Senate in 2005, he has worked to unite Americans on both sides of this debate behind commonsense, common-ground ways to prevent unintended pregnancy. He supports legislation to provide our teens with comprehensive sex education, prevent pharmacies from denying women access to their legal birth-control prescriptions, and increase access for family-planning services."

OK people, don't get mad at NARAL, get even. Look at NARAL's 2005 IRS 990 Form from 2005 and the millions that women have donated to them. Conveniently, NARAL's 2006 taxes are not available. Nancy Keenan makes around $150,000 for her shitty leadership! Look and see where your $ is going and then go to www.emilyslist.org and become a member of an organization that supports women:

I didn't stop my membership with NOW when it endorsed Hillary. I see no reason to stop my membership with NARAL for endorsing Obama. Both are pro-women, pro-choice candidates. Giving to Emily's List is a good thing, too.

When Hillary asks you to vote for Obama in November, will you?

"Angry Clinton Backers Promise To Undermine Obama"

===

Barack's gonna have a breakout win, and bring a whole bunch of dems to congress to join him in the major makeover this country so sorely needs.

And he's gonna put several decent justices on the Supreme Court, so our daughters won't have to worry about repeal of Roe V Wade either.

So let the dogs bark - and let the "coat hanger democrats" write in Hillary's name, vote for McCain, or stay home out of pure spite.

yes but you shut up first :Illinois Now on Obama's Present Votes On Choice:

During Sen. Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign, the Illinois NOW PAC did not recommend the endorsement of Obama for U.S. Senate because he refused to stand up for a woman’s right to choose and repeatedly voted ‘present’ on important legislation.

As a State Senator, Barack Obama voted ‘present’ on seven abortion bills, including a ban on 'partial birth abortion,' two parental notification laws and three 'born alive' bills. In each case, the right vote was clear, but Sen. Obama chose political cover over standing and fighting for his convictions.

"When we needed someone to take a stand, Sen. Obama took a pass," said Grabenhofer. "He wasn’t there for us then and we don’t expect him to be now."

There are two sides to this issue patch61

Obama's critics say he ducked a "no" vote; supporters say it was a tactical move.

Obama should have voted "no" on those bills, said Bonnie Grabenhofer, president of the Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women, which has endorsed Clinton.

But Pam Sutherland, president and CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council, said Obama was helping advance a pro-choice agenda by voting present.
"He always was going to vote 'no' on these bills. We needed to keep some of our moderate Democrats from voting yes, which is something you never want to happen," Sutherland said. By having a well-known supporter of abortion rights also vote present, it gave other Democrats cover, she said.

In addition, Patch61

"We think the way you talk about a bill and the way you stand up is important," Grabenhofer, president of the Illinois chapter of the NOW, said.

So how does this statement relate to HRC vote on supporting the Iraq War Resolution? She voted AGAINST the Levin Amendment that differed from the War Resolution only by forcing George Bush to seek Congressional approval for a war if, after inspections, the UN Security Council did not authorize it. Despite never having read the NIE, and thus not knowing what it said, she claimed she knew she had all the information she needed.
HRC’s political positioning is still claiming lives in Iraq today!

SHAME on Naral for supporting Obama. Imagine how Obama-folks would feel if the NAACP endorsed Hillary. Same difference.

What a sexist thing to write. You're counting out all the good men who are feminists. As if a vagina is a requirement to be pro-women.

Two Questions:

1. If Hillary Clinton is put on the Obama ticket as the vice-presidential candidate, will you angry Clinton supporters still sit out the election, and/or vote for McCain?

2. If Hillary Clinton is put on the Obama ticket, will you Obama supporters be so disappointed that you won't vote for the Obama/Clinton ticket?

It is, of course, understandable if some Clinton supporters threaten to not vote or vote against Senator Obama because we did not choose their candidate.

It is also childish, irresponsible and DANGEROUS. Why? Because, a failure to support our candidate by voting for McCain OR by not voting at all represents support for:

-> The indefinite continuation of the War in Iraq
-> New wars in the Middle East, most notably with Iran
-> The seating of Supreme Court justices dedicated to the overturning of Roe v. Wade
-> No healthcare for over 50 million American citizens

I could go on.

Mind you, had my candidate lost, I'd probably stamp my feet for a few days and threaten to vote for McBush.

Then I'd vote for Senator Clinton.

I'm believe Clinton supporters will do the same thing.

Those that won't should go ahead and register Republican.

I am not sure what Hillary's supporters' problem is with this endorsement. If it is the timing, it is unfortunate but done. So deal with it. If it is that they do not know Obama well enough, his stand on abortion etc., then it could be easily solve by a Q & A hosted by NARAL. Why is everyone acting like children in a food fight?

Well, when your voice may be heard, you choose to give it up by either sitting at home or voting Rep. who may elect a judge to the supreme court who will tip the balance and end Wade vs Roe! What are you thinking? Do not demonstrate your ignorance even if you are one of Hillary's uneducated supporter. What? cut your nose to spite your face? Just listen to the way you gals talk.

The beauty of America is that you can exercise your right to vote, even if foolish.

Supporting a McCain with your vote or by abstention means that your PERSONAL feeling are more important than:

* 100 years in Iraq with thousands of lives lost in each of those years, an inflation adjusted $12 Billion per month for each of those years.

* Continued job loss.

* Soaring gas and food prices.

* Potential war with Iran.

* No safer from terrorism since 9/11.

If this is what you would like to enjoy for another, four years, by all means, exercise your right.

Are black people not a part of the Democratic base? Last I checked black voters were the most reliable of all demographics for the Democrats.

AjicNYC: What is your proof that "the DNC has turned its back on the Democratic party BASE (Hillary supporters)"?

As I see it, the DNC, DLC and the Super Delegates continue to placate the Clintons. If the roles were reversed, Obama would have been forced to fall in line a long time ago. The Party is giving Hillary more than her due as the math is totally against Hillary and has been since late February. When Hillary keeps talking about how her husband won the nomination in June, that was in the old days when we had many big states come later in the process. The reality is that now all the big states have voted early and all voting is proportional, so victories, even in big states are quite muted.

If you want to be bitter and either stay home or vote for McLame, then you don't really care about what the Supreme Court will look like for the next 30 years. So go ahead. Ultimately, we all have to come together and all the women's groups like Emily's List , NARAL, NOW, etc will have to both endorse and campaign for Obama whether they like it or not. They have done it in the past. Hillary ran a lousy campaign and lost to the better candidate. Now it is just a mater of playing out the math.

Let's move on and back the better candidate once things play out in early June, OK?

As for NARAL, some of us already knew that organization was more political than policy driven.
During the reichwing Bushco Supreme Court nominations, NARAL showed its true colors then and lost any credibity on the issue of choice.

I am so tired of these crazy hillary supporters threatening to boycott the GE just because they didn't get their way. This is selfish and just goes to proove that the only thing they care about is themselves. These people are not real democrats and THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIS COUNTRY!!!

If Hillary had a One vote lead in Pledged Delegates, a One vote lead in the Popular Vote, and lead of One in states won you would not hear African Americans talking about they would not vote for the Democratic Nominee. It is a little disconcerting to hear some of these women (and other Hillary supporters) make those kind of statements when Obama has simply won fair and square by rules that were in place when the process begin. They blame Obama. Why? Because it wasn't his turn? They blame the DNC. Why? Because they won't come up with some slick way of changing the rules so that Hillary could win. They blame the media. Why? Because they did not continue with the coronation that started last year? Oh course this thing did not have anything to do with Hillary's vote against the war and her insistence on not apologizing for the vote or admitting the mistake of that vote. Had nothing to do with her penchant for playing all sides of issues without taking a position (i.e. Social Security). Had nothing to do with votes for Kyl-Leiberman or votes against the Levin amendment or votes for BS Flag Amendments. Had no nothing do with her campaign strategy or how her campaign was conducted. Inevitable, over by super Tuesday, no post super Tuesday plan, overpaid campaign manager (see Mark Penn). You just insist on being "bitter" at Obama, The Democratic Party, The Media,.........

McCain has already started courting the liberal bloggers who supported Hillary and they are going along as willing participants eager to undermine Obama's campaign.
