The endorsement of Barack Obama by the nation's foremost abortion-rights advocacy group is causing major fissures and backlash within the women's rights community.

Hours after Obama received the support of NARAL's Political Action Committee, the organization's Washington branch felt compelled to announce its continued neutrality and disappointment with the endorsement.

"We strongly disagree with NARAL Pro-Choice America's decision to endorse at this time," a press release from the group read. "To endorse Obama at this point in the race is an unconscionable slap in the face to Senator Hillary Clinton."

They weren't alone. In a hastily announced meeting late Wednesday night, several of Clinton's most high-profile female supporters lashed out against NARAL's PAC calling it "a betrayal," and "extremely unnecessary,"

"We feel abandoned by this organization today," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Elizabeth Malcolm, the head of Emily's List, called the move "disrespectful" to Sen. Clinton, "who held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade - to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process. It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them."

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Martha Burke, the former chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations, said she was "disappointed and think they are wrong. It feels like they are abandoning a known ally for a less committed candidate because they want to jump on a bandwagon. I think the pro-choice community should stick by a woman who has stuck by them."

And in a phone conversation, Marcia Pappas, the head of National Organization of Women, New York -- who famously accused Ted Kennedy for betraying women by endorsing Obama -- would not even commit to supporting the Illinois Democrat in the general election.

"It is disappointing that an organization that stands up for the rights of women would rush to this type of judgment, especially when we only have three weeks left. And I would wonder what criteria they used to make that judgment, based on the fact that [Obama] chose seven times to vote present," she said. "We certainly know that John McCain is not good on women's rights and we hope that Barack Obama is better on it, but it remains to be seen when we have a candidate who did not stand firm when he could have done so. "

Combined, the blowback from NARAL's endorsement is enough to suggest that Obama, should he become the nominee, may face future political hurdles when reaching out to the women's rights movement. But his record, compared to both Clinton and McCain, is strong on the group's issues. He has received three straight perfect ratings in NARAL's congressional record, has consistently supported a pro-choice platform, and his seven "present" votes (which Pappas cites) in the Illinois Senate were driven, he says, by legislative strategy rather than policy disagreements. As NARAL's president, Nancy Keenan, wrote on the Huffington Post:

"Sen. Obama has been a strong advocate for a woman's right to choose throughout his career in public service. Since joining the Senate in 2005, he has worked to unite Americans on both sides of this debate behind commonsense, common-ground ways to prevent unintended pregnancy. He supports legislation to provide our teens with comprehensive sex education, prevent pharmacies from denying women access to their legal birth-control prescriptions, and increase access for family-planning services."

Where is all the feminist outrage with the music industry over it's blatant misuse and distorted images of women as sexual eye candy to be flaunted about? Where was all the feminist outrage when C. Delores Tucker took on the rap music industry all alone? God bless her soul. Where is the feminist outrage when Republicans in Tennessee are attacking Michelle Obama right now, with outright lies and distortions? She is just as strong and accomplished a woman as Hillary when Bill first ran for President.

Stand for all women, with legitimate positions and issues or you run perilously close to losing your legitimacy altogether.

Who cares whether Hillary is "insulted?" She's a non-issue. She lost the nomination months ago, and the fact that she refuses to move on doesn't mean the rest of the country has to wait until her sham campaign finally goes away. I don't hear the Ron Paul camp whining about endorsements that McCain gets. What's the difference?

And if deluded Hillary supporters want to "undermine" Obama out of some petulant indignation and undermine the entire women's movement by enabling a McCain presidency and thus a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe v. Wade, it demonstrates that they really couldn't care less about their supposed cause.

Deluded??? You're an idiot. Ron Paul doesn't complain because McCain has already WON the nomination. That's the difference, and the fact you don't understand only makes you look ignorant.

She didn't lose months ago and she still hasn't lost. Until your messiah gets the magic number, he aint won squat. Now you can continue to insult her and all of her supporters, it's been the montra of Obama's grass roots campaign. But don't come crying to me, when he loses the general.

I'm a man and I see both sides of the abortion issue. I'm pro choice but I'm not pro abortion. I want more education, less pregancy and less abortions. When I was a younger, and before I had kids, I didn't think twice about abortion, but once you see your child born it does affect you.

Uh, sorry, but Obama is not my "messiah." I don't think he's in any way ideal, just not entirely unacceptable. The fact that you fail to recognize that Hillary HAS lost the nomination (yes, having no possible chance of winning = losing) makes you look deluded and ignorant. As does the little abortion screed that's got nothing to do with anything.

They both want the endorsement. They both know the importance, and they both want to carry the standard... Because they both cherish many of the same beliefs, and champion many of the same causes against their opponents, like McCain.

But the people who are bitter enough to undermine the one who gets the endorsement make it plain that they don't deserve it.

There are a few endorsements which I would term 'betrayals" of both trust and or friendship, but this one tops them. Clinton actually advocated for this group and they could not have the decency to hold their tongues until the nomination process was over. The star-gazing and celebrity chasing going on in Washington among our idiotic elected politicians and super delegates, and NARAL, is insulting to Americans and downright stupid.

I don't know.

From my perspective she and her maniacal hystrionic followers - who are constantly crying sexism or misogyny where it doesn't exist in order to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions - or otherwise screaming that they are victims and martyrs make me -deeply- ashamed to be a female.

I can only imagine a womans organization might feel the same. Don't you ever wonder - if this is a "slap in the face" maybe she deserved it for putting women back decades?

Or maybe they overestimated her followers, thinking they more rational and reasonable and able to determine when someone has fairly lost a contest - and might take their lead in accepting a fine candidate who will take care of their issues.

Perhaps you are right. They might have waited. But actually this race is over, and I think NARAL recognized it. They were looking towards the general election.

The dead-enders who still think Hillary has a chance are smoking AND INHALING some very bad dope and living in a fantasy world, full of a stupid, counter-productive, sense of aggrievement. Obama has voted 100% on your issues, for Christ sake.

NARAL did what any responsible political organization needs to do; they got on the train before it left the station. Apparently, many of you want to live in the station.

He has voted 'present' 7 (!) times. That means "I am not for or against it, but I heard the arguments."

I want a president who makes up his/her mind, who picks sides and fight for what is right. Senator Casey endorsed Obama because of Obama's commitment to pro-life, so whose side is Obama on? I frankly don't know. I Guess "Whoever's winning more votes".

Or look at gun control. Supports gun control, but tells voters in Idaho that he will not take away their guns. Always trying to have it both ways... That's old politics, not leadership and change.

These women of Hillary have really disgraced us all Women by blindly supporting HRC despite her divissiveness!! Hillary's femist supporters have behaved in such a way as to set back the women's rights movement for decades.

If you are looking for divissiveness, try Obama: black-white, young-old, educated-uneducated, rich-poor, male-female, urban-rural lieberal-conservative.

Black voters support him, because he is black.

Female voters refuse to support Clinton, because she is a female and supporting her would look too partisan.

And we wonder why the ERA FAILED to pass.
Or why after nearly 40 years, we are one Supreme Court Justice away from "Roe" being overturned
Because of women like Debbie Wasserman Schultz (who is such a known traitor to the Democratic Party she should just form her own) And Marcia Pappas who contiues the "PRESENT" smear of Obama orchestrated by NOW & Supported by Hillary Clinton
If anyone wants a true representation of Sen Obama's choice votes you can go to his website or better yet got to YOUTUBE & Googel a marvelous woman named LORNA BRETT HOWARD & see how she feels about Sen Obama & his record on abortion rights & her thoughts & disgust at the shameless, selfish & self- destrutive tactics employed by NOW & others!
Good luck with President McCain women!

HYSTERIA rules the now anachronistic militant feminist movement; they fit the stereotype that men have used against women for years. They prove the point, and fortunately they are in the minority. I am 60 years old, and it gives me the chills that so many in the movement have not moved with the times. They still use the same tired old cliches, chief among them that you must vote for a woman because she is a woman, regardless of how corrupt she is and regardless of the fact that she got to where she is because of her husband. I am really proud of the younger generation of women who are strong and not all wrapped up in victim-oriented politics.

Great post. But, as an almost 60 yr old woman myself, the numbers of actual voters that vote because she's a woman is so nonsensical. Why do these women feel the need to do this? There wasting their vote, not questioning the legitamacy of this candidate other than the fact of her gender. Smart voters vote on so many things, not this. W. Virginia, New York State, California voted retarded, PA, Ohio, Indiana...ok a little kkk mixed in with the stupidity, but what's the diff. Very, very unintelligent, unintellectual, uninformed vote

Bra-Burning 1970's-Style Angry Old Women Statement of Facts

1) Women are entitled. Hillary is a woman, therefore she's entitled. If you disagree, you're a misogynist.

2) It's wrong to vote for a candidate because of ethnicity or religion. It's expected you'll vote for the woman candidate ONLY because she's a woman. If you don't, you're a misogynist.

3) If anyone says anything about the woman candidate that isn't laudatory (even if it's accurate), they're obviously a misogynist.

4) If you're a woman, loyalty to your gender is more important than pesky issues that merely get in the way. If you're a man who votes for another man because he's the better candidate, you're a misogynist.

5) If you're a senator from, let's say, Massachusetts- and you've been a vehement supporter of women's rights for your entire career, but choose to support someone who isn't a woman, you're a misogynist AND a traitor who should be boiled and fed to the dogs.

6) Anyone who disagrees with us choleric, bitingly virulent, man-hating dinosaurs from an era that has been mercifully euthanized, we will punish you- even though it will assuredly guarantee that all 9 Supreme Court justices will be appointed by Republicans who want to see Roe v. Wade overturned.

Like Hillary, if we can't have our way, we'll take everyone else down with us in a squalid Scorched Earth campaign that is contemptibly hypocritical to our stated goals.

Oh, by the way . . . you're, no doubt, a misogynist.

As a bra-burning 1970's style angry old woman, I couldn't agree more. I'm really tired of my "sisters" shrieking "sexism" every time the wind blows. I grew up during the Eisenhower years and remember true, blatant, institutionalized sexism. We haven't won the battle but we have made a heck of a lot of progress. At the beginning of the primary, I was pleased that a woman would be seriously contending for the nomination. I expected her to be judged on her qualifications, ideas and ability to run a successful campaign. Silly me. I was shocked to find out the only criteria to be considered was gender - the same thing I thought we had been fighting. I guess I'm just old and confused.

Misogyny means hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women. What's the equivalent word for that attitude towards men? I think these women are being giant hypocrites for judging a candidate by genitalia.

Wake up Female, Hard-Working and otherwise not-colored America -- Hillary Clinton is Toxic and the Clintons never have, still don't and never will have any interest in the bettering of the average American. Too many idiots for this one keyboard and its 102 keys to set straight. UNBELIEVABLE. This race was over after WI.

actually, the 'an' is reserved for a word following that begins with a vowel. The author is correct.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:55 AM on 05/16/2008

True, but when referring to abbreviations if the letter is pronounced and the letter begins with a vowel ("Ef"), then an is correct. If you choose to pronounce FAQ as "fack," then you would say "a FAQ," but if you pronounce FAQ as a series of letters, then it would be "an ef-ay-cue."

This is why we have an NSA but a NASA.
