McCain Sets Timetable For Getting Out Of Iraq

Senator McCain's speech today gives a timetable for when US troops will leave Iraq if he becomes President. McCain went after former GOP rival Mitt Romney during the Florida primary, claiming his mention of timetables was equivalent to putting defeat into the hands of terrorists. Now the Senator is changing his tune.

Sen. John McCain will pledge today that most American troops will return home from Iraq by 2013 if he is elected president, a position that closely resembles the promises made by both of his potential Democratic rivals.

In a speech here this morning, McCain will say that only a small contingent of troops would remain in Iraq in non-combat roles beyond that date. He predicts that the drawdown will be possible because al Qaeda in Iraq will be defeated and a democratic government will be able to thrive in the war-torn country.

John McCain will point to defeat and call it victory thereby allowing us to pull our troops from Iraq. It's how people in denial operate, it's how the Republican party operates.

Ah here we go....the elderly McCain in his "specific vision" has just predicted on National TV that he will have won the war, and captured or killed Osama Bin Laden by 2013, conveniently 1 year after his hoped for first term. Boy these old time politicians never change. As I type he drones on in a delusional talk about what he will achieve, but says nothing on how it will be accomplished.
He was a hero in Vietnam...­. but his isolation for 5 years taught him nothing about strategy even tho Republicans tout him as "experienced".

He is still talking about Al Qaeda as the cause of the trouble? What about the Shiite militias? According to the most rigorous analysis, there are only about 850 members of Al Qaeda there. And if the democratic government doesn't thrive? In a long Matt Bai piece to appear in Sunday's NYT, some of McCain's congressional colleagues say he is basically refighting the Vietnam War. His policy is Iraqization, and it will fail just as Vietnamization did.
