WASHINGTON — In President Bush's hint that Barack Obama wants to appease terrorists, Democrats heard troubling echoes of 2004, when Republicans portrayed John Kerry as irresolute and weak on national security.

Determined to end the similarities there, Obama and his allies counterattacked Friday with a multi-pronged response that was as fast and fierce as Kerry's response to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads was slow and uncertain.

And while the Democrats' first-day responses focused on Bush's speech this week in Israel, Friday's reactions mainly targeted John McCain, the GOP presidential candidate who seemed largely on the sidelines at first.

Obama, appearing unusually feisty and at times sarcastic, led the countercharge himself. Campaigning in South Dakota, he departed from planned remarks to rebuke Bush and McCain, and then called a news conference for a second dose.

"I was offended by what is a continuation of a strategy from this White House, now mimicked by Senator McCain, that replaces strategy and analysis and smart policy with bombast, exaggerations and fear-mongering," the Illinois senator said.

Bush's speech Thursday to the Israeli parliament, he said, wasn't about policy.

"It was about politics, about trying to scare the American people," Obama said. "And that's what will not work in this election because the American people can look back at the track record of George Bush, supported by John McCain," and conclude that the nation was misled about the Iraq war's justification, cost, length and benefit to America.

For four years, Democrats have regretted Kerry's halting response to the so-called Swiftboat ads, aired by Bush supporters at a crucial time in their 2004 presidential contest. The ads portrayed Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, as dishonest and "unfit for command."

Story continues below

Many politicians, including McCain, condemned the ads, and some stations quit airing them. But the $25 million campaign triggered conversations on talk radio, TV programs and front porches nationwide. Swiftboat became part of the political vernacular.

The ads not only undermined Kerry's personal image. They helped divert attention from the Iraq war, whose unpopularity was growing, and they shifted the debate on national security to a broader, more personalized framework that benefited Bush.

Democratic strategists say Bush is trying to give McCain a blueprint for the same tactic, and they are determined to respond more promptly and forcefully.

"Like Bush, McCain knows that he needs to make the election less about the past conduct of the war," said Stephanie Cutter, who was Kerry's 2004 campaign spokeswoman. "He'll go after Obama's trustworthiness, just like Bush went after Kerry's."

But Obama, she said, has shown that he "can give as good as he gets by making McCain responsible for Bush's failures and calling him out for his politically expedient flip-flopping."

The Democratic counterattack against McCain began in earnest early Friday, with a Washington Post op-ed piece touching on Hamas, a Palestinian militant group that the United States considers a terrorist organization. Former Clinton administration State Department official James Rubin wrote that McCain, responding to a TV interview question two years ago about whether U.S. diplomats should work with the Hamas government in Gaza, said:

"They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another," despite their unpalatable record. Rubin said McCain is "guilty of hypocrisy" and is "smearing" Obama.

The McCain campaign accused Rubin of airing an incomplete portion of the interview but focused its response Friday on Iran, not Hamas.

Campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said Obama "has pledged to unconditionally meet with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad _ who pledges to wipe Israel off the map, denies the Holocaust, sponsors terrorists, arms America's enemies in Iraq and pursues nuclear weapons."

McCain used similar words himself in a speech to the National Rifle Association in Louisville, Ky.

"It is reckless to suggest that unconditional meetings will advance our interests" with Iran, he said.

Obama has said he would pursue talks with Iran without insisting on "preconditions" that would likely prompt Iranian leaders to spurn the request.

Bush started the brouhaha, which dominated Friday's campaign news, with Thursday's speech to Israel's Knesset. After mentioning the president of Iran, he said: "Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."

"We have heard this foolish delusion before," Bush said. "As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is _ the false comfort of appeasement.'"

It's unclear whether the 2008 campaign will feature attacks comparable to the Swiftboat ads. But if it does, the response is almost certain to be quicker and angrier than anything seen four years ago.

I'm glad he's catching on and responding quickly. I DO wish he'd be a bit more forceful. But It's becoming a nail biter! Barack has to be careful not to offend his "brand" of positive campaigning but not allow himself to be swiftboated. This is where we could use the help of Hillary Clinton.

Hillary: If you want to reverse the damage to your legacy and re-define yourself in the Democratic Party....you must become Obama's attack dog against the GOP. If you don't, the party will never be the same, and you will be blamed.

Yeah, I think a sitting Senator saying bush's comments was bullsh*t, was forceful, LMAO! Fear mongering and race baiting will not be working for the republicans in 2008. Let's see what they come up with next; a manufactured incident in Iraq or even here in the U.S.?

This was like a stormy night in the county side. You hear the rain falling all around the house for hours and then at once you see a gaint bolt of lighting flash go across the sky in your direction. Moments later you hear a massive thunder clap that shakes the very foundation of the house. At this point, you and the family turn off all the electrical devices and 'Go To Bed' for the evening. Bush's speech was the lighting strike with Obama's and the Democrats' response being the massive thunder clap. The WH and Republicans are backing down so fast! Too funny!!!!!! Thanks so much Bush! As they one of your fellow republicans said, "Every time [Bush] opens his mouth, he swallows the microphone." This is an instant CLASSIC!!!! Bookend this statement with Keith O's Special Comment from the week and Chris Matthews' Hardball epi-drama with Kevin James.

McCain and Bush," Even though we totally Blew it with 9/11, Afgan War looking for Bin Laden, you the guy that we gave WEAPONS too." "Don't mention the WMD's we didn't find in Iraq, and we had no friggin idea what the hell we were getting ourselves into over there"

McCain and Bush, "Yeah and don't tell them about all the AMERICAN lives that are going to be LOST, for this big IRAQ Blunder"' " But we have experience of getting ourselves into more sh.t that cost AMERICAN lives. Oh Well"

McCain and Bush, " How do we get the hell out of Iraq again?" " Hush, we messed up the economy too, don't let anybody find out about that one, hehehe"

that's right. The IRAQ WAR was used to help Bush and Co. get rich. Bush wants to use McBush to keep those interests. The proposal to stay in the war gets them 4 more years of death to soldiers, a fucked up economy at home, gas prices up the ass.....all so Bush, McBush and their cronies can stay rich. WTF? If america votes for McBush, they get what they deserve.

Maybe Barack and Michelle would look better to America after 4 more years of McBush gov't.

The Obama camp rushed to judgement that Bush was talking about him when clearly he was doing damage control over Carter's recent visit where he recognized Hamas and elevated their status. Even Obama condemned Carter's visit.

All Obama had to do was agree with Bush. Obama cleverly used the race card against the Clintons and now he is trying the same type of politics and deception with the Republicans.

So Mr. Judgement screwed up again and I'm sure he is editing out the statements on his website that his policy is to meet with leaders of Iran and Syria w/o preconditions.

But guess what: Barry will be lucky to get the number of electoral votes that Kerry got and I would predict less. He won't win Florida, Ohio, and Michicgan for sure. He can drag around $500 haircut all he wants, it won't help.

Concerning nonamnesiac's post - Absolutely right. It seems the minute someone arises who is moral, decent, visionary and able to share his message in an articulate and engaging way, some ku-kluxer, right-wing crazy tries to get rid of him. In some tragic cases, as with JFK in 63, Bobby and Martin in 68, they succeed. Barack does in fact speak for most Americans. He speaks for me. But there's lots of monied interests out there that are becoming more and more afraid. Many, many Americans, including me, pray every day for his safety. Hey, Secret Service - bump up his protection, please. America cannot afford to lose Barack Obama. I've said before that I believe he's our last great hope of once again being the light of the world. All of us are keeping our fingers crossed. Protect this man!

Alright, folks. Take a look at this.....................LOOK CLOSELY. The Hannitys, Rushes, Roves and Foxes are already at work. Not to mention The Decider. The Dems can't keep letting these guys do this unchallenged. We need to come together to spread the truth about these profits of misinformation and fear. And we can't just resort to their tactics. We have to be SMARTER and more forthright. What if we all started to spread the TRUTH???? That these people are directly responsible for our great nation being so divided. Tell your friends, family and co-workers that they are dividing our society. You see, I for one, still LOVE America. I believe we can overcome the Bush era. But............we have to come together. Find common threads with whom you have political differences. That is the cornerstone. It's a start. If more people would believe in that dynamic, WE could make the world a better place. Look at the Gladiator arena our political system has become. What is the end game of this division? It can only lead to the lowest point in American history. Bush and his thugs have taken it to a much higher level. Lying, force feeding us their agenda, and dividing America more than any other administration in our history. And they continue to get away with it. GET OFF YOUR ASSES, AMERICA. ACTIVATE!!!!! ENGAGE in this great and powerful system that is our democracy. If we all do that..............The liars won't (can't) win.

If only folks could get over the "politics" and start thinking OUR 'DEMOCRACY' again, you would perhaps hear more discussion. "Politics" has become a dirty word that calls for a dirty fight. Sad but true.

The Revolutionary is on the right track. It's rare that an opportunity like this comes along twice in the span of one lifetime. There was the "kiddie crusade" for Eugene Mc Carthy in 1968 twhen anti-war students ( many of whom were revolutionaries) "got clean for Gene" and spruced up their appearance and, uh, habits to campaign for him.
That revolution failed for many reasons, but one was that these students, seen as spoiled smartasses, did not forge links with working-class young people. And, it was not til much later (after the Kent State shootings by the National Guard) that the entire country came together against the Vietnam war.

We get a second chance!!

We have got to act upon our responsibility to vote. And not just in the Presidential election. We will have to remain active and give the new Prez something to work with in the House and Senate. I hope we're up for it. It's time to talk politics in a non-confrontational way. Time to remain calm and respectful but to be persistent.

If The Hannitys, Rushes, Roves and Foxes want to vote to continue the war in Iraq and start a new one in Iran, then THEY should pay for it!! They should also pay retribution to the 4000+ soldiers who lost their lives in this war.

We will NOT ever allow ourselves to be 'swiftboated' again. I loved it when Chris Matthews nailed that right wing talk show host when he used the word 'appeasement' without even knowing its historical antecedents. That was hilarious, and shows us in bold, electric color just how intellectually and morally empty these Republican policies really are. Did you all notice how the more Chris bothered this guy with the facts, the more the guy yelled over him. This is what we American people have endued for decades now. ENOUGH!!!

We also need to remember that the conservative bloviators usually stick to their own territory where there is no discourse-- and they have a loyal following. It's great that there's a little cross-pollination now-- at least it's happening.
Yes, ENOUGH! And where we register that is at the polls. All of them local, state, federal. We need a landslide and then we will need patience because the next administration has a gigantic mess to clean up. And, it will probably take at least two terms to even begin.

Can we let go of criticism of Kerry?

One of the things that makes Obama strong
is the fact that his flank is being covered
by the leaders of the Senate including Kerry.

I can't remember which Republican insult it
was -- there have been so many -- but Kerry
was all over it in 30 seconds. The Republicans
didn't know what hit them, it took them a day
to reconnoiter.

Obama only has a Rapid Response Team
because of lessons learned.

Exactly. With Dems like Biden and Kerry and
Kennedy watching his back, each attack has
been turned to Obama's advantage.

I'm in awe of how swiftly the Dems are
responding to Republican attacks.

Re: Kerry, where were Biden and Kennedy
when Kerry was getting swift-boated? The
Dems in the Senate and House were just
bystanders.

Kerry can't be held entirely responsible for
what happened in 2004 because, I'm sorry
to say, some of those Dems were holding
back because they planned to run against
Kerry in 2008.

Now that most of them are too old to run
in 2012, they're willing to jump in on the
side of Obama.

Hillary had better get her head straight on
this point as well because there are going
to be so many books coming out on her utterly,
comically, disastrous campaign that she's
not going to be able to run in 2012.

I don't think there's been a campaign so
ruinous in the history of campaigning, it
disqualified her for president.

For that reason Hill has to get out on the
hustings and campaign for Obama.

All Obana's campaign has to do is run ads with those pictures of Bush and McCain hugging, and Bush endorsing and praising McCain at the White House. Then a phrase like, "Do we want another four years of Bush's policies?" That's not even switboating. It's absolutely factual - and very effective.

George Bush and John McCain are a threat to Democracy they are threat to American values. John McCain said that its more reckless to have diplomacy where you talk to your enemies than going to war with them. Thats what John McCain said so be prepared for more wars if this guy get into power. For all these criticism of Barack Obama I have yet to hear anything coming out of his mouth that has caused me to shiver in fear either because he is naieve or because he has some sinister plan for the US. John McCain MOST DEFINITELY. John McCain is a DANGER to this country and whats even more frightening he is not hiding it. But he just might win because of Obama's name and Obama's race. But when we go down together as a country I hope I get the opportunity to tell the people who voted for McCain I TOLD YOU SO!!!

People need to open their ears and close their eyes and listen to what this FOOL is saying. In fact I seriously want a psychological examination of John McCain. My only hope is that if they chose not to vote for Obama because of his race that they go instead with Barr the libertarian over John McCain. As much he is conservative I KNOW my freedoms will be protected.

If one connects the dots, Bush's comments before the Knesset, McCain's ratification of them and Huckabee's comments before the NRA appear to be a signal to crazy violence prone right wingers to take out what they are portraying as a threat to US democracy -- Barack Obama -- but what is actually a threat to their never-ending personal wealth machine through contributions direct and indirect from the military industrial complex and private contractor cronies.

Barack needs to be very careful now. It is easier to accomplish assassinations in primary season than after a candidate is selected as the nominee or becomes President.

And I love it. Kerry had no punch. Gore was a pitiful wimp too. They were easy to beat up on. Not this guy. Obama is a fighter.
