GOP Southerners Fear Obama Wave

The sharp surge in black turnout that Senator Barack Obama has helped to generate in recent primaries and Congressional races could signal a threat this fall to the longtime Republican dominance of the South, according to politicians and voting experts.

Should Mr. Obama become the Democratic nominee, he would still have to struggle for white swing voters in the South and in border states like West Virginia, where he lost decisively to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in Tuesday's presidential primary. In West Virginia, where more than three-fourths of white voters chose Mrs. Clinton, 20 percent of the white voters said the race of the candidate mattered in their choice.

Republicans equal half the voters in this country and Obama supporters have delighted in crapping all over Hillary to the point that many of her supporters have declared publicly they will vote for McCain or stay home.

It's about time southern states started voting en masse for people who actually represent their interests. Lord knows it's about time the Republicans realized there's more to America than white men.

And of course, this is the reason the 'Hillary wins the big states' argument is ridiculous. The big states will go blue no matter what. The question is the swing states. With Hillary, the same old swing states are just as in question as they always are. Obama puts a whole bunch of traditionally red states back in play - and that gives him a safety net against the kind of swing state upsets that have killed the Dems in the last 2 elections.

You do realize that the Southern segregationists were mostly Democrats, correct? They only jumped shipped to the Republican party in the mid sixties, led by segregationist par excellence Strom Thurmond. Before that they were an important part of LBJ's landslide victory, where they were kept in tow only by federal pork; ever wonder why all the NASA facilities are in the south?

I would say it's easy to forget our history, but in many cases it was never learned in the first place.

You need to examine the political ideology of the politician. If you were honest enough to do this you'd see southern democrat = social conservative, northern republican = fiscal conservative. It wasn't until 1968 and George Wallace's "there isn't a dime's worth of difference between [democrats and republicans]" that this argument had true polical meaning. He was referring to national platforms on social policy. Eisenhower enforced the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision with the 101st Airborne. Wallace stood in the door, blocking entrance. Nixon realized he could win only by peeling off southern kkkonservatives from the democratic party.

When McCain was asked why he SKIPPED the vote, McCain said that he would have voted AGAINST the bill anyway! McCain said that instead of equal pay protection, women simply needed “education and training.“

If southerners fear anything they should fear the corporatist status quo continuing in Washington DC politics. I do. Perhaps if there are southerners who do fear Obama, they should look at their empty textile factories that used to employ thousands and tell me what they fear most. I will listen, I hope Obama does. I live in Texas, a southern state, and believe me there are some towns here that would not get caught in at night. I am an AA woman.

It's sad, but, a lot of these people minds cannot be changed. When the economy isn't doing well, they blame it on "minorities" taking something from them. While not keeping in mind, that we are all doing bad in this economy. It helps when you are a voter who seeks answers instead of allowing yourself to be spoon fed information. Electing the POTUS is too important to cast a vote based on ignorance and mis-information.

I live in Dallas, which is a lot more diverse and progressive. I would not have been able to even say that a few years ago.

They refuse to believe that they have more in common with the "minorities" than with the wealthy white Republicans.
