New York Times:

The sharp surge in black turnout that Senator Barack Obama has helped to generate in recent primaries and Congressional races could signal a threat this fall to the longtime Republican dominance of the South, according to politicians and voting experts.

Should Mr. Obama become the Democratic nominee, he would still have to struggle for white swing voters in the South and in border states like West Virginia, where he lost decisively to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in Tuesday's presidential primary. In West Virginia, where more than three-fourths of white voters chose Mrs. Clinton, 20 percent of the white voters said the race of the candidate mattered in their choice.

That's what Southern white trash said during the civil rights movement when the Times exposed the brutality South of the Mason Dixon Line.

Need I remind you it was the North who illegally created the blatantly-unconstitutional Marshall Law and made the civil war about race, an action which is highly likely to have amped up the previously-dimming racial tension below said Mason Dixon line?

I try very, very hard not to lump Southerners into one category, then I read shit like this and I'm like, "Never mind"...

Keep thinking that way. My family comes from North Carolina on one side and Mississippi on the other and they are real different places. Always have been and probably more so now. The Democrats can do well in both places. In some ways places like North Carolina maybe more ready to accept change that places like West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. I know that the vast majority of people from these three states are not racist, but the "South" has no monopoly on racism and parts are changing faster than in northern and border states. Mississippi may be more ready too, I just don't know.

Obviously you are from one of the more enlightened states like NJ, PA, OH or MI? Why do you think those wonderful places keep losing population?
