UPDATE (3/18): John McCain's chief strategist Charlie Black isn't losing any sleep about his firm's involvements with some of the worst dictators and human rights abusers in the world. Responding to a MoveOn video seeking to have Black removed from McCain's campaign, the lobbyist-turned-adviser had this to say:

"I'm not ashamed of anything the firm did," McCain adviser Charlie Black says of his days as the principle in one of Washington's most influential lobbying firms. "If they want to use it to fire up the left wing, well, that's fine."

Black is referring to a campaign by liberal watchdog and political groups to pressure McCain into dumping Black, now a top McCain campaign strategist. Today, MoveOn's political action fund released a video accusing Black of lobbying "for some of the world's worst tyrants."

ORIGINAL POST: John McCain just can't get a handle on his lobbyist connections. Ben Smith at Politico reports:

John McCain's campaign asked a prominent Republican consultant, Craig Shirley, to leave his official campaign role and released a new conflict of interest policy Thursday after a Politico inquiry about Shirley's dual role consulting for the campaign and for an independent "527" group opposing the Democratic presidential candidates.

Shirley, a conservative public relations veteran, doubled as a consultant to McCain and to the group Stop Her Now, a 527 group barred from coordinating its activities with presidential campaigns. He is not currently on the McCain campaign's payroll, but would also step down from his role on McCain's Virginia Leadership Team, a McCain spokesman, Brian Rogers, said.

"If you're working for a 527 involved in the presidential race, you won't have a named role in our campaign," said Rogers.

Under the new policy, a copy of which was provided to Politico, "no person with a McCain Campaign title or position may participate in a 527 or other independent entity that makes public communications that support or oppose any presidential candidate."

Marc Ambinder confirms the new effort by the McCain camp to scrutinize its lobbyist advisers:

This morning, according to two Republicans with direct knowledge, Rick Davis, the campaign manager, e-mailed to McCain's entire staff a memo entitled "McCain Campaign Conflicts Policy" -- Effective Today" that includes a questionnaire asking about previous professional activities.

One of the questions asks: "Have you ever been a registered lobbyist at either the Federal or State level?" Another asks: "Have you ever been a registered foreign agent? A third asks staff members to list all of their previous lobbying or foreign government clients.

Story continues below

All staff members are required to submit the form to McCain's campaign counsel, Trevor Potter and his staff, for their review.

Employees who lie about their affiliations will be fired. The new conflicts policy prohibits campaign staffers from being "registered lobbyist or foreign agent, or receive compensation for any such activity."

Despite his reputation as a government reformer, conflicts of interest are nothing new to the McCain camp. Today USA Today is reporting on yet another land swap deal that McCain secured for a major donor which netted his supporter a profit far exceeding market value.

Sen. John McCain secured millions in federal funds for a land acquisition program that provided a windfall for an Arizona developer whose executives were major campaign donors, public records show.

McCain, who has made fighting special-interest projects a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, inserted $14.3 million in a 2003 defense bill to buy land around Luke Air Force Base in a provision sought by SunCor Development, the largest of about 50 landowners near the base. SunCor representatives, upset with a state law that restricted development around Luke, met with McCain's staff to lobby for funding, according to John Ogden, SunCor's president at the time.

The Air Force later paid SunCor $3 million for 122 acres near the base. It was the highest single land transaction of the private lots purchased by the government -- three times the county's assessed value and twice the military's estimated value. SunCor also donated another 122 acres. Alan Bunnell, a spokesman for SunCor's parent company, Pinnacle West Capital, said the donation was meant to minimize the company's tax bill and enhance the value of adjacent property it owns.

The new policy has already claimed one lobbyist who advised McCain, energy policy adviser Eric Burgeson:

McCain's former energy advisor joined the firm of Barbour Griffith & Rogers in Washington in 2006 after serving as the chief of staff at the Department of Energy. Burgeson's energy clients include Southern Company, which operates electric utilities and nuclear-power plants in the Southeast.

''Eric leads the firm's energy practice utilizing his domestic and international energy policy expertise and network of policy decision makers,'' the firm's website states.

But despite renewed scrutiny, the new policy is unlikely to to cut short the career of McCain's chief political adviser Charlie Black, who is a notorious lobbyist with connections to several unsavory dictatorships. Campaign Money Watch has penned an open letter urging the removal of three lobbyists/adivsers, including Black, who have or currently represent regimes know for committing human rights abuses. Meanwhile, MoveOn.org has published a short video of his most nefarious clients, and is seeking Black's ouster from the McCain camp.

John McCain says we're fighting in Iraq to plant "the seeds of democracy," but the firm of his "chief political adviser" Charlie Black made millions lobbying for the world's worst tyrants...

...Ferdinand Marcos, who executed thousands of his own citizens in the Philippines...

...Zaire's Mobuto, who publicly hanged his opponents and looted his country's vast mineral wealth...

...and rebel leader Jonas Savimbi, a mass murderer, who covered Angola with landmines.

Charlie Black said he didn't do anything wrong. John McCain should tell Black he did. Call John McCain and tell him to fire Charlie Black.

Last line was cut off. Should be:

Don't be fooled, my friends, John McCain's policies are every bit as charmless as those of George W. Bush.

Here is the deal with John McCain's "charm offensive" -

Fed up with political gamesmanship, Independents and even some Moderate Democrats were drawn to John McCain's "Straight Talk Express" in 2000. McCain's candor seemingly fit nicely with the "Maverick" image he had branded.

But many people who've appreciated his charming appearances on "The Daily Show" have failed to recognize that there's a MAJOR disconnect between McCain's inclusive personality and his divisive policy positions.

Yes, John McCain is an American hero and he possesses an engaging personality...

Yes, John McCain seems like somebody we would all like to have a beer with...

... Wait a sec - deja vu - Where have we heard that sentiment before?...

Oh, yes... Back in 2000... When there was "no difference" between Al Gore and George W. Bush... When Bush was a "compassionate conservative"... When Bush seemed like somebody we'd all like to have a beer with...

If only we could turn back the clock...

But we CAN learn from history - McCain, for all his appealing personality traits - is an arch conservative, just like Bush.

McCain would:

- continue Bush's policy in Iraq,
- continue Bush's saber-rattling with Iran (a third war???),
- maintain Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy individuals and corporations,
- continue Bush's tilting of the courts further to the right,
- overturn Roe v. Wade as Bush has endeavored.

After seven years, Bush's charm offensive has lost it's charm.

Don't be fooled, my friends, John McCain's policies are every

Why isn't the main stream media covering this? Their buddy McCain not only has these lobbyists working on his campaign but also hanging out in McCain's senate office and McCain has been active in ensuring that these lobbyists clients get the contracts and legislation that they want.
Where is Vicki Iseman? Somebody give Reznik and Abramhoff a call they know about McCain's corruption. The Keating scandal has not stopped McCain's corrupt double dealing.

Why hasn't the media made a big deal about Bill Clinton being on the payroll as advisor to the Emir of Dubai? Not exactly a democracy.....Or receiving donations from China and later we have all these one-sided trade treaties with them. I notice you don't say a word about that. Why?

Surprised anyone? This is classic Bush strategy, principle be damned. The people will get over it anyway. Or, everyone expectes some degree of corruption in government and as long as they keep it within the boundaries of the gray area and the MSM does not make it an issue we will survive it. Therefore Bushes relationship with the Bin Ladens were never fully discussed and so never explained, selling billion dollars of arms to Saudi Arabia a dictatorship that supports terrorist was passed over while we waxed eloquently about our support of Israel was never dissected. They know that if it dosent matter to the MSM then it doesnt matter at all.

McCain has been getting a free ride from the media for a long time, but when all these videos come out and hit the main stream. The media will have no choice but to crucify the straight talk express.

First of all, I'm looking at an insane ad here. "Radical leftist" in conjunction with Obama is absurd. There were at least 3 or 4 Democrats running in this primary that were probably to the left of Obama. Put it this way, if he doesn't want to rip out every free trade deal from the get-go, he's probably not a "radical leftist". Besides, its the Republican party that's gotten more and more extreme over the years...it's a matter of perspective, pure and simple.

Secondly, if you cut all your lobbyists half way in, that doesn't matter. That's just another form of pandering. It's like hiring an office full of sex offenders, being caught, and firing them all. Just because you fired them doesn't mean you can have suddenly, retroactively, have good judgment in hiring them all in the first place. If you're surrounding yourself with hardened lobbyists from the start, that's a sign that either you're a complete idiot or you're completely corrupt. When you start firing them, that's usually because you're hand was caught in the cookie jar and you're trying to point fingers and look innocent.

While,..... excluding Rep. Kucinich, it's hard to see "3 or 4 Dems who were to the left of Obama" (Biden?, Dodd?, Clinton maybe, but in the distant past) ...... "zull2" makes an important point here, with which I agree.

In my youth, "member of the radical left" might have applied to myself and my compadres, ....and you can take it from me,.... for DECADES now, radical leftists have been about as common as four leaf clovers (if you find one, touch their Che Guevara poster for luck!!)

And in the halls of Congress?............as common as living Dinosaurs, which is to say non-existent.

It is the Republican theorists, (kristol, wolfowitz,norquist),.......... the infotainers (limbaugh, o'rielly, hannity, coulter), and unfortunately for us all, many of the office holders (delay, bush, cheney) that have drug the GOP so far off into the right-wing weeds as to make ol' tricky Dick Nixon, father of the EPA and OSHA, and appeaser* of Chineese communists..... look like an anarchist bomb-thrower.

The situation is so acute, and the consequenses so dire, it's hard to say I'm "enjoying" the GOP's comeuppance......let's just say I feel vindicated that only a tiny percentage of the right wing base can any longer be fooled by these charlatans.
Even better, two Democrats, (an African- American, and a woman, no less!!) are seen by voters all across the political spectrum for what they are: CENTRIST politicians with ledership ability, perfectly plausible as President of the US regards.................................................................tm

CHARLIE BLACK WORKS FOR MARK PENN.

I haven't seen MoveOn's ad, but if they target Charlie Black and leave out Mark Penn, they won't see another dime from me.

Black just resigned as chairman of BKSH Worldwide, a subsidiary of Burson-Marsteller, apparently over the recent unpleasantness over one of Burson-Marsteller's clients, the junta that is pulling a Katrina-style mismanagement of the cyclone disaster in Burma.

(You gotta love this, in all seriousness. Riveting how Bush and his fellow regressive junta types seem to share the same worldview.)

http://www.alternet.org/election08/85266/

Okay, so Charlie Black just quit. If memory serves, Penn is still working for Hillary's campaign, albeit with a greatly reduced public profile, and is still CEO of Burson-Marsteller, "perception management" for the worst corporations and human rights violators in the world.

Mark Penn is also, wait for it, the guy who has run the Clintons' campaigns since at least 1996.

PLEASE tell me MoveOn bothered to mention that?

People, people, you're missing the obvious point. McCain's campaign workers are engaging in APPEASEMENT! Now what should happen is the Patriot Act should be invoked and gramps should be sent to Gitmo for "questioning." That'll teach 'em.
