LORETTO, Ky. — The day of campaigning had barely begun and Hillary Rodham Clinton was already eyeing the whiskey.

The Democrat wasn't drowning her sorrows, she was touring Kentucky's Maker's Mark distillery as she soldiers on despite a difficult week. Her opponent, Barack Obama, continues to draw more Democratic forces into his camp and has largely ignored her while tussling with certain Republican nominee John McCain in a general election-style dispute over foreign policy.

But Clinton is acting as though the nomination is still within her grasp, beginning a multi-day swing through Kentucky on Saturday with a tour of the famous distillery in Loretto, where its first bottle of bourbon whiskey was created in the 1950s. Perhaps she is hoping for a replay in Kentucky of the election boost her much-publicized shot of whiskey gave her last month in Pennsylvania, where she won the primary.

This time around, Clinton put on gloves and safety goggles and joined the assembly line to dip a bottle of whiskey in Maker's trademark red wax coating, saving the drinking for later.

"There are some people who have been saying for months that this is over, and every time they say it, the voters come back and say, 'Oh no it's not, we're not ready for it to be over,'" Clinton told supporters as she stood on a stage in front of a stack of whiskey barrels.

"You don't quit on people and you don't quit until you finish what you started, and you don't quit on America."

Clinton began her day in Kentucky on just a few hours of sleep following a redeye flight from Portland that landed at 5 a.m. She boarded the flight after a day of campaigning in Oregon, which votes Tuesday along with Kentucky. Known for her ability to catch up on cat-nap sleep just about anywhere, Clinton rarely seems as exhausted as she must be, although sometimes it shows.

As she began to sign her name on the wall at a cannoli bakery in Salem, Ore., on Friday, Clinton paused for a moment with her black marker in the air and turned toward the press crowded around her to ask what day it was.

Story continues below

Later that evening, during a televised town hall meeting in Portland, she was asked to describe the high and low points of the campaign.

The best times, she said, are whenever her daughter Chelsea joins her on the trail. The low point, she said, "is just being sleep-deprived and trying to get to more places than there are hours in the day to possibly cover."

"But every day something happens that really convinces me how important this is, and energizes me," she added.

Clinton is hoping for a big win in Kentucky, and plans to campaign here every day until the primary. The state's demographics resemble neighboring West Virginia, which gave her a much-needed victory last week.

Both states are overwhelmingly white, rural and have more residents below the poverty line and without college degrees than the national average _ the kind of working-class voters that have helped boost Clinton to victory in other states.

But Obama is favored to win Oregon, where 52 delegates are at state _ one more than Kentucky. Obama already enjoys a delegate advantage that makes it mathematically unlikely for Clinton to overtake him in the primaries, and that advantage continues to widen. Her campaign instead hopes to win over the influential party leaders and elected officials known as superdelegates with the argument that she would be the better Democrat to face McCain in November.

At another stop in Kentucky on Saturday, Clinton targeted McCain for promoting an economic agenda that she said would be "nothing less than four more years of George Bush economics."

Clinton told a few hundred people gathered in a gymnasium at Kentucky State University in Frankfort that McCain puts special interests first and middle class families last.

The Republican National Committee retorted that Clinton was launching a "desperate" attack and would subject the country to higher taxes and spending.

It has been harder in recent days for Clinton to portray herself as McCain's natural opponent. She was left to essentially watch from the sidelines as Obama and McCain engaged in a spat this week over how the United States should treat the leaders of rogue nations, giving the sense that a general election battle is already beginning to take shape between the two candidates.

And lately, instead of criticizing her Democratic opponent, she's taken aim at the media and the political pundits who are counting her out.

Clinton dismisses them in a new television ad airing in Oregon. The spot features clips of political pundits as an announcer says: "In Washington, they talk about who's up and who's down. In Oregon, we care about what's right and what's wrong."

And in her remarks in Kentucky on Saturday, she portrayed pundits and the media as out of touch elitists who have jobs and health care, and no idea what it's like to worry about making ends meet.

"They're not the people I'm running to be a champion for _ I'm running to be a champion for all of you," Clinton said.

She is still drawing crowds at her campaign events, but they are less raucous, and some of supporters admit they are concerned. Many remain upbeat, but are more reflective about the state of the primary race, which ends June 3 with contests in Montana and South Dakota.

As Clinton wrapped up a speech on the porch of a farmhouse in Bath, S.D., one day this week, 85-year-old Roy Heintzman said as he walked away: "I hope she's got an ace up her sleeve. She's going to need it."

"...you don't quit until you finish what you started..."

Hillary has become so desperate that now she's channeling Yogi Berra and Jack Twist (a character in "Brokeback Mountain").

There's a point beyond which all dignity is lost. Even if she hasn't actually reached that point (and it's arguable), she's about as close as one can get.

Hillary, it's time to pull out.

I have never objected to Hillary Clinton staying in the race until the very last primary even though I am fiercely pro-Obama. I think it is democratic of the Democratic Party to let all primary voters be heard unlike the Republicans who always shut the primaries down early. What I object to is that she has used this extra time to make it more difficult for Obama and the Democrats to win in November. There is no Reagan's 11th commandment for Hillary. The Clintons are for the Clintons and not the Democratic Party.

More like she's "finishing off her political career." She's my senator and she has a lot to answer for for her considerably less then gracious, forthright, fair, and sensitive presidential run. Her ability to galvanize her constituency and represent their interests, rather than her own ambition for power is seriously in question. And I'm not a Hillary basher, I was excited she was running and have always been a big supporter of her presence in politics. But her actions have shown her to be willing to engage in scrape the bottom of the barrel politics to get what she wants, which may not be in the best interests of her party or the country. I thought she would do better, I'm sorry she didn't. And I don't think she realizes the long term damage to her political career. What was it that Bush is always accused of possessing: HUBRIS?

Oh, Hillary. If only I hadn't seen this latest persona of yours ... Hillary the Fighter ... created for you on CNN by James Carville and Paul Begula ('She has to show she's a fighter ... show she will fight for people, etc.) after being unable to read the pulse of the country yourself and fashion your own successful message after another of your numerous losses ... I could ALMOST be sympathetic toward you. As it is, your words ring as hollow and inauthentic as I do believe you are. Don't get me wrong. I don't hold this personally against you ... You are what you are. Just quit trying to sell me your phony product like I'm as phony and as inauthentic as you. It looks like the tide has finally turned in the county, and playing to the lowest common denominator no longer works.

Hillary cannot lie about her voting record - it is on paper. She has never fought for the people.
Just like the Republicans now are desparate to find change. What the heck have they been
thinking all along. Lie, cheat and think they get away with it and then comes voting time and they
know exactly what they have to turn around except they won't ever change. Boehner is disgusting.
And forget about their leader, who commits treason while out of the country. They cannot disasscociate themselves since they went along with him and so did the Bluedog Democrats.
Let us get rid of them come re-election time. Our punishment for their unscrupolous actions.

Isn't the mark of wisdom the ability to see folly and change course? What Hillary/McCain/Bush would have us believe is that if one is heading towards disaster, continuance is courageous.

Like I learned way back when: NEVER CONFUSE COURAGE WITH STUPIDITY.

A smart person knows when to give up -- Clinton is obviously having great difficulty acknowledging that it is over. It is over, sweetie (that's for you, Erica Jong, if you read this). Game -set - match. It is over. The Obama Train is leaving the station -- you all can either get on or get left behind. Obama '08 -- yes we can!

Message to Hillary Clinton and her Camp:

What would the boondoggle look like if ALL of the potential nominees took the position you did and hung in there until after all the states had voted... or, worse yet, until the Convention?

There will always be room for common sense in the nominating process.

The suggestion being made that "Winners Don't Quit" has the unfortunate flip side of suggesting that EVERYONE who has dropped out of the Democratic nominating process are, de facto, LOSERS. Please show some respect and understanding. They are, in fact, WINNERS because they actually have put Change and Democrat Victory in November ahead of themselves! Party Unity... Hillary... is a WINNING position that well takes the place of self-centered, unchecked desire for power at any cost. THAT defines "The Loser That Won't Quit!"

I always want to revisit where your conscience and devotion to the "Everyone's vote should count!" was when it was first determined that Michigan and Florida voters would be counted out due to the breaking of rules. Why didn't you INSIST THEN that they be included. I know this is a repeated query, yet one so worth revisiting, considering all of your New Math and New and Ever-Changing Reframing as you continue to insist that you are a Winner that Won't Quit.

You're motivated by little beyond self-aggrandizement and it's hurting our Party.

Pluralism supposes that there are many independent forces all pulling in their own best interest.

It must be entirely coincidental that the MIC, Big Oil, the MSM, the banks, Ins. Co's, Pharma, etc.,

have been unilaterally supporting BushCo and his enabling band of perverts and cowards (GOP).

Actually, when there are far too many coincidences, one has to at least consider the possibility

that there is a conspiracy and it is my contention that HRC and the DLC are a large part of it.

I gotta give it to her, despite my lowered support of her over the past several months.

She is one tough chick. If only most Democrats had her motivation, but less underhanded techniques, this country would be in much better shape.

I would agree with you if I really believed that she WAS thinking about your country
instead of just herself and getting back the money she owes, That's my problem, I
read her books and Bill's too, but all I could hear was I. There was never a WE as I
hear from Obama. Listen carefully, you too may hear, what I hear,

The only thing the Clintons have ever fought for is their own personal access to power.

The Clintons have caved in on everything else e.g. DOMA and Don't Ask,

If the Clintons had ever fought tenaciously for anything but their own access to power this country would be in much better shape. .

"She is one tough chick." WTF? The inconsistencies in using that word are laughable.
The nation has had enough "tough" and far to little diplomacy.
Hillary is a dried up old hen who lays square and infertile eggs.
"Chick" is a young creature that blends in with the others...not the spurred rooster that
is sparing with all the chickens in the coop.
Hillary's neck goes on the stump before long.

This toughness issue is misconstrued. What she really is is stubborn. Toughness is a positive trait that suggests an ability to exhibit strength and resilience in the face of adversity. However, when you create that adversity yourself by consistent negative attacks on an opponent, it is the opponent who in actuality displays toughness.

Sen. Clinton is not exclusively at fault. Not exclusively, but ultimately. She was at her finest this entire primary when this past Friday she criticized Bush's accusation of Dems/Obama appeasing terrorist states. She showed a real toughness in her response and a welcome and overdue solidarity with strong, genuine and measured emotion.

Conversely, what we've seen on the campaign trail has been a series of false strategies proposed by whichever adviser was in control that week, resulting in forced Jekell/Hyde performances and a resulting difficulty in finding her real "voice." The parroting of her adviser's bullet-points, all of whom were jocking for position in a highly combative environment she herself encouraged, has been transparently insincere ("change you can xerox," etc.) and more than any other factor has buttressed the public perception of her polarizating persona.

The simple but ugly fact is that the Clintons are utterly amoral.

They differ from bu$hist Republicans only in that they appear (though this is as yet unproven) to be merely passively willing to be destructive should that benefit their personal agenda, rather than actively seeking to be so. It’s the difference between allowing Iraq to happen, on the one hand, and initiating the war, on the other.

Many Democrats have been hopelessly in love with the Clintons these last twenty years, for reasons that never made any more sense to me than did, well, the hatred Billary have engendered from Republicans.

The Clintons couldn’t be more harmful to the Democratic Party if they were roguish drunks, continually crashing the family car and getting fired from their job, but doing so in some sort of (barely) charming fashion.

And the Clintons are behaving like this BEFORE the election; Bush only showed his true colors once he was elected, although we knew he was a party drunk and cocaine user, dodged National Guard, and failed businessman before also. Same with McCain and his explosive temper, and rockbottom IQ. How many times does the electorate need to take heed of warning signals? WE have self destroyed ourselves by voting for petty things like drinking beer with and gay marriage homophobia. There will never be another chance if we get it wrong this time. And we should NEVER succumb to fear which the GOP WILL TRY, MARK MY WORDS, whether by false flag or something else.

Many progressives and the true Democrats (of the Democratic Party) have wised up to their ways this last time round, and one of the joys of this election may be to bury this curse forever, permanently ostracize the Clinton cancer, and return the party to its traditional New Deal agenda of genuine compassion and governance in the public interest.

Meanwhile, though, isn’t it time for Democrats to dump this destructive spouse, once and for all? Haven’t the Clintons finally gone on a drunken selfish bender one too many times? If helping John McCain win the presidency doesn’t qualify as the last straw, I don’t know what would.
