LORETTO, Ky. — The day of campaigning had barely begun and Hillary Rodham Clinton was already eyeing the whiskey.

The Democrat wasn't drowning her sorrows, she was touring Kentucky's Maker's Mark distillery as she soldiers on despite a difficult week. Her opponent, Barack Obama, continues to draw more Democratic forces into his camp and has largely ignored her while tussling with certain Republican nominee John McCain in a general election-style dispute over foreign policy.

But Clinton is acting as though the nomination is still within her grasp, beginning a multi-day swing through Kentucky on Saturday with a tour of the famous distillery in Loretto, where its first bottle of bourbon whiskey was created in the 1950s. Perhaps she is hoping for a replay in Kentucky of the election boost her much-publicized shot of whiskey gave her last month in Pennsylvania, where she won the primary.

This time around, Clinton put on gloves and safety goggles and joined the assembly line to dip a bottle of whiskey in Maker's trademark red wax coating, saving the drinking for later.

"There are some people who have been saying for months that this is over, and every time they say it, the voters come back and say, 'Oh no it's not, we're not ready for it to be over,'" Clinton told supporters as she stood on a stage in front of a stack of whiskey barrels.

"You don't quit on people and you don't quit until you finish what you started, and you don't quit on America."

Clinton began her day in Kentucky on just a few hours of sleep following a redeye flight from Portland that landed at 5 a.m. She boarded the flight after a day of campaigning in Oregon, which votes Tuesday along with Kentucky. Known for her ability to catch up on cat-nap sleep just about anywhere, Clinton rarely seems as exhausted as she must be, although sometimes it shows.

As she began to sign her name on the wall at a cannoli bakery in Salem, Ore., on Friday, Clinton paused for a moment with her black marker in the air and turned toward the press crowded around her to ask what day it was.

Story continues below
advertisement

Later that evening, during a televised town hall meeting in Portland, she was asked to describe the high and low points of the campaign.

The best times, she said, are whenever her daughter Chelsea joins her on the trail. The low point, she said, "is just being sleep-deprived and trying to get to more places than there are hours in the day to possibly cover."

"But every day something happens that really convinces me how important this is, and energizes me," she added.

Clinton is hoping for a big win in Kentucky, and plans to campaign here every day until the primary. The state's demographics resemble neighboring West Virginia, which gave her a much-needed victory last week.

Both states are overwhelmingly white, rural and have more residents below the poverty line and without college degrees than the national average _ the kind of working-class voters that have helped boost Clinton to victory in other states.

But Obama is favored to win Oregon, where 52 delegates are at state _ one more than Kentucky. Obama already enjoys a delegate advantage that makes it mathematically unlikely for Clinton to overtake him in the primaries, and that advantage continues to widen. Her campaign instead hopes to win over the influential party leaders and elected officials known as superdelegates with the argument that she would be the better Democrat to face McCain in November.

At another stop in Kentucky on Saturday, Clinton targeted McCain for promoting an economic agenda that she said would be "nothing less than four more years of George Bush economics."

Clinton told a few hundred people gathered in a gymnasium at Kentucky State University in Frankfort that McCain puts special interests first and middle class families last.

The Republican National Committee retorted that Clinton was launching a "desperate" attack and would subject the country to higher taxes and spending.

It has been harder in recent days for Clinton to portray herself as McCain's natural opponent. She was left to essentially watch from the sidelines as Obama and McCain engaged in a spat this week over how the United States should treat the leaders of rogue nations, giving the sense that a general election battle is already beginning to take shape between the two candidates.

And lately, instead of criticizing her Democratic opponent, she's taken aim at the media and the political pundits who are counting her out.

Clinton dismisses them in a new television ad airing in Oregon. The spot features clips of political pundits as an announcer says: "In Washington, they talk about who's up and who's down. In Oregon, we care about what's right and what's wrong."

And in her remarks in Kentucky on Saturday, she portrayed pundits and the media as out of touch elitists who have jobs and health care, and no idea what it's like to worry about making ends meet.

"They're not the people I'm running to be a champion for _ I'm running to be a champion for all of you," Clinton said.

She is still drawing crowds at her campaign events, but they are less raucous, and some of supporters admit they are concerned. Many remain upbeat, but are more reflective about the state of the primary race, which ends June 3 with contests in Montana and South Dakota.

As Clinton wrapped up a speech on the porch of a farmhouse in Bath, S.D., one day this week, 85-year-old Roy Heintzman said as he walked away: "I hope she's got an ace up her sleeve. She's going to need it."

Where is this Myth of Hillary having the most Votes? In Michicagan where she was the only one on the ballot 45% of the voting population DIDN'T vote for her.

Dsme origin as the myth that the Democratic selection of a Nominee is based on the most combined votes excluding caucuses -- The Clintons.

I am tired of the Clinton games. I voted for Bill Clinton twice, but now my opinion about he and his wife has gone down drastically. The thirst for political power can really show the warts of corruption, selling out and lies with ALL politicians. Dumbya Bu$h, Dick Cheney, Bill & Hillary Clinton, Joe LIEberman and John McCain are examples. Hillary calls herself a Democrat, but is she REALLY? In terms of Hillary, what more proof do you need? She is a former Goldwater girl. She has pro-hawk voting record, she voted yes on the Iraq war, she voted yes on the Kyl/LIEberman bill about Iran and she recently talked about obliterating Iran if they attack Israel (even if the latest NIE report says otherwise). She has more lobbyist money than anyone, with McCain in 2nd place. Hillary also supported all the trade agreements that the Clinton administration put into place that has us losing jobs to Mexico and places like that. Now she says she is against those trade agreements. The Bu$h administration has continued that tradition by blessing the outsourcing other jobs to places like India and China. Bottom line, Hillary is supported by the lobbyists, is pro-hawk, changes her positions, lies often and has sold out. Sounds like a lot of politicians, but especially Joe LIEberman. Is HE is Democrat now?

Let me re-phrase that:

You don't quit, until those guys working very hard trying to come up with the Michel Obama smear video trying to pull something that would entirely destory the Obama campaign and tilt the delegate ship into her side finally admit they got nothing new to stamp on Barack.

Besides, Hillary is still dazed by the new political trend of change. The Country is owned by the Israelis. They run the Electoral Machine. Back in the days, they would have easily done some 30 minutes documentary, subliminal shoots like that, showing Obama, plotting and secretly meeting with Moslems Mujaheed about how he would easily give them the country immediately hes the president.
But thats not working. Americans for once are saying no more Bull.
Most liberals who are still supporting Hillary are just doing so because of family affiliation or fear of been called naive. Obama message doesnt sound inexperience.
We all know the country is due for change.
Its over Hillary. But if you want us to show you the way out, we would gladly do that.

If this headline had appeared two weeks ago, I would have said all Hillary was going to fiinish was the viability of the Democratic Party. But she seems at this point to be trying to recover from her destructive ways, so a long as she refrains from tearing the party in half and continues to campaign against Bush/McCain, her presence in the race may actually be constructive.

Actually I think Obama supporters are overreacting a little on this one. Hillary has every right to stay in until the end of the primaries. She is not attacking Obama and attacking the media is fine with me because it will actually help the Democratic Party set the tone in the general by playing the refs. The Republicans are already trying to play the refs by complaining that Obama is not letting them play their distraction and diversion game through the MSM.

Unless they steal the nomination, the Clintons have lost. If they steal it, somehow through a death wish lurking in the democratic partry, she will lose to McCain. It is very unlikely that enough people will support her if there is an insider coup to gain the nomination. Her talking about others being elite has some validity, but at the same time it is comical since she is even more elite than the vast majority she calls elite, and her only hope of winning is by negating the elected delegate vote and popular vote and having the elite of the party choose her.

Clinton and truthfulness are generally not on speaking terms.

Intrade is now giving Hillary only a 6.6% odds of winning the nomination down from over 21% before the IN and NC. These odds are approaching being politically hit by lightning range. To put it in perspective these odds are half the odds the Giants had going into the Super Bowl but I doubt lightning will strike twice.

I need to state this in a stand alone post because it is another national disgrace that McCain and Bush are perpetrating on our brave military. Many people ask including thousands of troops why Bush, McCain and many congressional Republicans don't support the new GI Bill. Their reasoning is more despicable than most Republican schemes. They don't support the new GI Bill because they worry it will negatively affect troop retention. See Bush, McCain and many Republicans want to have an open ended war/occupation in Iraq. The new GI Bill provides educational grants that will give these brave young man and woman an opportunity to get ahead in life. Bush and McCain do not want to give them that option because they want to limit their options so that they do reenlist. This is the most despicable scam Bush and McCain have perpetrated yet and that's saying something. The stop loss program was bad enough but by not supporting the new GI Bill they are trying to make our brave troops into indentured servants.

To Hillary's and Obama's and most Democrats credit they support the new GI Bill. That's why it's so sickening when Republicans try to use patriotism as a weapon against the Democratic Party when we are the true patriots.

Great point.
I notice Obama and Clinton don't talk clear and loud enough about some of these very noteworthy points. Why is that?

On the article: I guess this morning I'm at the point where Hillary is gaining a bit of my respect for her dogged determination. Maybe it is also because for a few days, she seems to be laying off the "nasty" behavior and words no one in America respects her for.

It's not how bad you screw up, it's how well you recover!

Democrats just don't were their patriotism on their lapels. That was the point Obama was trying to make but it was over the head of too many Americans.

The non-partisan Iraq and Afghanistan veterans group did a study on which members in congress supported the troops by grading their votes on veterans and troop issues. The average grade for Democrats was a B and the average grade for Republicans was a D. In fact all the A's were earned by Democrats and all the F's by Republicans.

Hillary Clinton got and "A"
Barack Obama got a "B+"
John McCain got a "D" or maybe even a "D-"

It was so embarrassing for Republicans they made them remove the party designations from their study.

I'll try to find a link to the study.

SuperKollider it is indeed a crying shame that the Republicans have these motives to deny the troops that so bravely help to defend one another. How much new technology and understanding came as a result of the GI bill post WWII? But why should we be the least bit surprised? They seem reluctant to even educate our children that well. Maybe they fear that their children would face too much competion from us regular folks getting a college education.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:07 AM on 05/18/2008

100% on point KQuarksSuperKollider. I SAID THE SAME THING. I got that and I hope others will too. It is revolting that McCain is refusing to support our troops by favoring the new GI bill. Instead they are using a watered down version that reeks of indentured service. Specifically in trade for a 4 year college education for the soldier that he/she can share with family members, the soldier will have to give 12 years of service to the military. It doesn't even clarify if the soldier dies in combat, becomes disabled or, is removed from service via honorable discharge prior to the 12 years required . . it does not state whether the benefit will be stopped or if the soldier/family would have to reimburse the military. I guess I really don't need clarification based on the treatment of our soldiers so far (i.e. cremation of our soldiers who gave their lives via pet cemetary facility) the military will probably send them a bill. .. . and there you have it.

Wow how cynical. Thanks for the details it's even worse than I thought.

I worked as a scientist for over twenty years before I was disabled.

Everywhere I worked we had a tuition reimbursement policy if you were studying in the same field that you were working in at the time. In fact that's how I paid for my Masters in Chemistry. Most of these reimbursement plans started after 6 months of service. To think that the military makes you serve 12 years is beyond despicable.

Clinton declares shamelessly that she got more votes without telling those people who were listening to her that she added the votes in MI where Obama had none and she didn't count voters in caucuses states either. That' is how she cheated to get more vote counts: her delusional calculation. To repeat it many times only shows her contempt for her audience who didn't know better. So much for "every vote counts". This woman is such a pathological liar that she can say it as if it is the truth that no one else in the party can see it. It is sickening to hear people praised her for her works and her services for the country. She stole her husband's presidency right in front of every voter's eye and still can strick them to think she is tenacious, never- quit fighter for their good. What humility she is using in the Senate while she is a junior senator is only for a short time in her long ago plan to get to the WH herself. Once she is No 1, she will return to her own self, my way or highway again just as she did when she was the unelected president in Bill's presidency. She wants to make history and stack up her retirement fund after another stint at the WH , just as she and her husband did during the last 8 years with books, speeches and lobbyings for more foreign companies to take American jobs.

Any primary voters who don't know the facts by now, should be ashamed of themselves. Woefully out of touch voters are not what this (or any) country needs. Unfortunately, there are very few places the 'average' American can go to get the easy to digest and reference facts.

It's amusing how one minute they claim that the Democrats in congress can't get anything done and the next they're blaming them for gas prices and housing foreclosures.

WAYNE, Mich., June 27 (2000) -- Gov. George W. Bush of Texas said today that if he was president, he would bring down gasoline prices through sheer force of personality, by creating enough political good will with oil-producing nations that they would increase their supply of crude.

"I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply," Mr. Bush, the presumptive Republican candidate for president, told reporters here today. "Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot."

Yeah Republicans are trying to pull another scam on the intelligence of the American voters. They are trying to say that things are worse because the Democrats have "controlled" congress for the last two years. This is who the argument goes, gas prices are higher, inflation is up, the deficit is up and we are in recession because of the Democratic congress. Of course this is utter and complete nonsense since 90%+ of the causes these problems are resulting from the failed policies of Bush and the Republican congress of the prior 6 years. But be aware that this false argument is coming.

Besides it does not change the outcome. As an AA woman who was deeply shocked with some of the decisions and statements made during her heated campaign in the earlier months, I understand that she isn't behind everything. She can't be held responsible for millions of supporters. Besides, it does not change the outcome and I strongly believe that she will push to get the democratic nominee elected in the fall.

again . . . Go Hillary!

Two things. First, I just saw Hillary on tv at a rally, screaming like a shrew about how she's the stronger candidate. Some superdelegate or other should tell Hillary that if she tries to steal the nomination, she willl NOT be the nstronger candidate, because the American voter can't stand that kind of theft.
Second, I saw Obama on tv just after that, in Oregon, and to me he looked like someone who has just received the worst news of his life. He really did, I've never seen him look that subdued, or down. Has anything happened that would make him look like this? I don't think it's just physical exhaustion, his facial expression was downright morose.

Dear Hillary,
Respectfully, we (myself and any who agree with me) have decided that Barack Obama is the more electable candidate in November.
We strongly urge you to admit defeat, which is a far different thing than quitting, and throw your full support behind Barack Obama. With your full and enthusiastic support, we are confident that he can defeat his erratic, uninformed, ineloquent and quite unimpressive opponent in November.
I'm sure Senator Obama can be persuaded to appoint you Secretary of State, or maybe Attorney General. Veep is no longer a realistic possibility.
In any event, we wish you luck in all future endeavors.
