It looks like Bob Schieffer will be at CBS News for a long time yet. While the anchor had previously said he would hang up his hat after the presidential inauguration, CBS News has issued a press release saying that Schieffer and the network have inked a new long-term deal:

Bob Schieffer and CBS News have entered into a new long-term agreement, it was announced today by Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports. Schieffer is the network's Chief Washington Correspondent and is anchor of "Face The Nation." He will also continue to contribute to the "CBS Evening News With Katie Couric" and "The Early Show," as well as to CBS News' political and Campaign '08 coverage.

"Bob has been an integral part of our coverage of Washington - and especially politics - for nearly 40 years," said McManus. "He is one of the most respected journalists in our business and is a favorite with viewers around the country. I'm extremely pleased that Bob will continue to play a key role at CBS News for years to come."

Yay! I love Bob. He's the main reason I still watch CBS rather than NBC or ABC for news or Sunday morning shows. I think he's the best anchor since Dan Rather also. If Katie did leave, I think viewership might rebound with Bob.

He was picking up ratings when she started. i knew ratings would go down. CBS should have kept him as anchor.

Good! He should have been the CBS Evening News Anchor anyway...

Truly a class act and one of the last good ones. I still miss Peter Jennings, though.

But wait - can't Bob just take over the CBS Evening News again right now???? Please? Pretty please???

God Bless Bob Scheiffer....he's a lion among jackals in the news community...no one comes close to his quiet dignity, his ability to be truthful without being angry, and his total integrity...

I agree he should be anchoring the evening news...it would help restore some integrity CBS's news division.

My family and I watched CBS news for what seemed like eons. Think Walter Cronkite. We stopped watching when CBS hired Katie Couric. Congratulations Mr. Schieffer! I would really love it if you could go back to anchoring the nightly news, but I know that would be greedy of me.(lol)

I used to respect Schieffer, but his overly obsequiousness toward Bush, Cheney and McCain have turned me off. Same goes for Cokie Roberts.
Re his response to: The Military Commissions Act, nullifying habeas corpus and holding detainees without charge:
SCHIEFFER: Senator McCain and the White House came together on a plan that ensures America will abide by the Geneva Conventions in dealing with enemy prisoners. It is not a perfect plan, to be sure, but it shows how we do things in a democracy -- out in the open and in accordance with the law, even when dealing with the worst of the worst.

Re Bush's flight suit photo op from May 4, 2003:
SCHIEFFER: As far as I'm concerned, that was one of the great pictures of all time. And if you're a political consultant, you can just see campaign commercial written all over the pictures of George Bush.

Personally, his palsy-walsy interviews with Cheney, joking about retirement and other light-hearted buddy - buddying, when we had unleashed a violent civil war in Iraq, killing innocents, was just too much for me to take.

agreed

But it should help ratings if he replaces Couric

Too many weenies, not enough Olbermanns

What should he have done? He perhaps doesn't see the world in quite the black and white terms you do. My beef with Schieffer is that he has been telling us he's leaving now for years and never actually exits the studio. I recall YEARS ago him getting all choked up after a broadcast saying he was leaving and yet here he is. Same with Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes. I thought he was gone - no dice. What about Brokaw? Nope, still lurking about. Rather still turns up from time to time. I guess retirement ain't what it used to be. Only Johnny Carson actually left the spotlight.

Good. He's one of the few bobbleheads left on TV thats a journalist. The others should watch him and be ashamed of their own performance.

Hooray for Bob Schieffer. Was sad to hear you say you were hanging it up. Look forward to your coverage of the 2012 race.

Along with dumping Katie Couric, they should dump whoever thought it was a great idea to hire her in the first place. Schieffer was the ideal replacement for Dan Rather. And if he doesn't want to be anchor, they should just hire Rather back.

good for you Charlie...you are one of the best

Bob Schieffer, Bill Moyers, Daniel Schorr - journalists/reporters who always show class and integrity and aren't afraid to tell it like it is.

Who else is in their class...or has the potential to be?

The sound you hear is the final nail being pounded into Katie Couric's coffin.

Yes, that Couric could replace a real newsman like Schieffer shows how clueless the execs at CBS have become.

Hopfully he'll stay around until the end of J. McCain's hundred years war.

CBS really needs to bring him back as the anchor of the Evening News. He's one of the only true journalists left in television.

Congratulations, Mr. Scheiffer. You are one of the best journalist/reporters. Glad you'll be sticking around.
