NYT Op-Ed: Cindy McCain Should Release Tax Returns

Senator John McCain's wife, Cindy McCain, has decided not to release her tax returns -- not now and not in the future. In the interest of transparency and to support her husband's frequent calls for clean and open government, she should rethink that decision.

Since their marriage in 1980, Mrs. McCain, the daughter of a multimillionaire Anheuser-Busch distributor, and her husband have filed separate tax returns. In April, Mr. McCain released his own returns, but just for the last two years -- a paltry nod to openness. Mrs. McCain, it was explained, would not release her tax returns in "the interest of protecting the privacy of her children."

When McCain's nearly bankrupt campaign started flying in Cindy McCain's corporate jet at deeply discounted rates, their finances became politically intertwined.

Also, in the name of transparency, it is essential that the public be assured that McCain supporters, lobbyists, and other influence peddlers have not been laundering gifts and other payoffs through his wife's bank accounts. This isn't an accusation that this has happened, its just part of the normal vetting process that all candidates must go through to ensure that its not happening. Filing separate tax returns does not change the fact that income coming into Cindy McCain's accounts also benefits John McCain.

Privacy is, necessarily, one of the things you and your family sacrifice if you want to be President.

Those who believe in "protecting the sacred American marriage bond" might want to consider that if Mme. McCain should be forced to reveal her tax returns, it might be that McCain himself has never been permitted to see them, and this might put a TERRIBLE strain on the marriage.

candidate crank up the heat. The loser
ident should start calling for a voter boycott on the winner.
You may not be able to peal off voters to our side but
demotivating them so they stay home is almost as good.

I've often suspected this is the case when I see the vituperative tone taken by supposed Hillary supporters toward the Obama campaign and vice versa.
