WASHINGTON — Barack Obama will reach a significant milestone Tuesday as he marches toward the Democratic nomination for president _ a majority of pledged delegates at stake in all the primaries and caucuses.

Obama will still be short of the overall number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination, unless he were to suddenly receive an avalanche of endorsements from the party and elected officials known as superdelegates. But the Illinois senator's campaign is touting the delegate milestone as a big step in defeating his rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"A clear majority of elected delegates will send an unmistakable message _ the people have spoken, and they are ready for change," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in a memo to supporters Monday.

"As we near victory in one contest, the next challenge is already heating up," Plouffe wrote. "President Bush and Senator McCain have begun coordinating their attacks on Barack Obama in an effort to extend their failed policies for a third term."

Obama picked up the endorsement of Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia Monday, less than a week after Clinton overwhelmingly won the state's primary. Byrd is the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate.

Obama has led in pledged delegates since he won the first caucuses in Iowa on Jan. 3. The two candidates stayed close through Super Tuesday, when Democrats voted in 22 states and American Samoa. Obama won 13 more delegates than Clinton that day _ out of nearly 1,700 at stake.

Obama built an imposing lead the following two weeks, winning 11 straight contests in states such as Louisiana, Maryland, Washington and Virginia. He led by 161 pledged delegates on Feb. 19, after victories in Wisconsin and Hawaii. The lead has been relatively unchanged ever since as the candidates spent the past three months trading victories.

Obama goes into Tuesday's contests with 1,610.5 pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses. He needs 17 more to reach a majority of the 3,253 pledged delegates available. Clinton has 1,443.5 pledged delegates, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press.

Clinton's campaign played down the significance of the milestone, accusing Obama of declaring victory without reaching the required number of overall delegates.

"Premature victory laps and false declarations of victory are unwarranted. Declaring 'mission accomplished' does not make it so," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said in a memo to supporters.

Obama has a total of 1,915 delegates overall, including endorsements from superdelegates. Clinton has 1,721, according to the latest AP count.

Obama is a little more than 100 delegates short of the 2,026 needed to clinch the nomination. He cannot make up that ground in the Kentucky and Oregon primaries because of the proportional way in which Democrats award delegates. The two states have a total of 103 delegates at stake Tuesday.

But winning a majority of pledged delegates could help his case with undecided superdelegates, who are free to support whomever they choose at the party's national convention in August. Obama argues that superdelegates should support the candidate who wins the most delegates in the primaries and caucuses. Otherwise, he says, they would be overturning the will of the voters.

Obama, who overtook Clinton in superdelegate endorsements a little more than a week ago, picked up six more Monday. Clinton added none.

Clinton argues that superdelegates should exercise independent judgment.

Her campaign is also trying to change the math by getting the delegates seated from the Michigan and Florida primaries. Clinton won both primaries, but the states had been stripped of their delegates for violating party rules by holding their primaries before Feb. 5.

The Democratic National Committee's rules panel is scheduled to address the issue May 31. If any of the delegates are reinstated, it would increase the number needed to clinch the nomination.

I hope that when Clinton concedes, she makes the point that a vote for McCain is a vote against Roe v Wade, as aging Supreme Court members will be replaced in the next four years. The tone she sets will be extremely important. If she is genuinely magnanimous in defeat, the Democrats will win. If she plays the passive-aggressive card in hopes of running in 2012, Obama may still win...in which case, she will be rendered insignificant by her own hand.

If this truly is about sabotaging the '08 election at the expense of this nation and every voting Democrat, she won't have the opportunity to run in '12. Not a chance.

Again, the Democratic party is watching this very carefully. If the Dems lose, it will be as a result of a good portion of the 61% of registered Democrats trying to elect a Republican. It's well advertised what that faction is, as self-promoted.

People have short memories. Not that short, though.

The truly sad part about all of this is that there is a reasonable chance that this debacle is going to hurt the chances of a Sebellius or like to run for President. Knowing that a portion of the Dem party will gladly support a gender vs. ideals and policy is a sobering notion, and it opens up a pandora's box for future elections, ie: No Democrat will win until we have a female nominee. This, by every definition, is sexism.

Or if McCain wins because of Hillary, she will become the pariah of the Democratic party and will forever be relegated to obscurity. She has to be completely nuts if she thinks she can come back in 2012 if she contributes to Obama winning in November.

Paradise by the Delegate Light

Obama:
I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Entering this race
And there were seven other candidates in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking to beat me as you did
And all the voters
Began wishing it was me that night

And now our delegates are so close and tight
It never felt so bad, it’s been such a fight
And we’re tearing up the party and filling it with strife

Though it’s cold and lonely in this endless fight
I can see paradise by the delegate light

Hillary:
Ain't no doubt about it
We’re almost even
Rove thinks I have a chance so
I Don’t Stop Believen’

Obama:
But I have money left
And I am leading

Baby doncha here the people
You’ve got them clogging up all the blog sites
I've been waiting so long
For you to move along so I can have some fun

And I gotta let ya know
No you're never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes - It’s really no surprise
It'll be all right
I wanna make my democratic run

Though it’s cold and lonely in this endless fight
I can see paradise by the delegate light!

You got to do what you can
And let Super Delegates do the rest
Ain't no doubt about it
Cause I have money left
And I am leading....

We're gonna decide the nominee tonight...
An tonight's the night...

Hillary:
Stop right there!

A commenter well below on this string mentioned other parties.

I thought you all would enjoy this clip of Cynthia McKinney's announcement for the Green Party.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03cOM9r51Nw

Her comments on the war, on the stolen elections of 2000 and 2004, on the excessive influence of lobbysists, on our addiction to oil, on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, on the environment, on global warming -- and on the unfulfilled voter mandate of 2006 -- are all right on.

"America deserves a government as good as its people and as noble as its ideals. America deserves a president who will defend our constitution and defend our civil rights."
-- Cynthia McKinney

Think what you will of the Greens (or McKinney) but it is an excellent speech and clearly defines a vision we can all support, and incorporate, into our party's platform.

Oh Red Birdy - you are like a vulture...in for the kill even if the road kill is another vulture....Senator Obama IS the Democratic Presidential Nominee. Warren Buffett and I will vote for Senator Obama....the real question is whether or not YOU will.....

BTW, this true liberal gay man voted for Bill Clinton gladly in 1992 and holding my nose in 1996...and I voted Gore in 2000 gladly and Kerry while holding my nose in 2004. It is time for the DINO, DLC and Yellow Dog wings of the Democratic Party to join progressive, populist and liberal Democrats, progressive Republicans and Independents, and stop W or McCain from a third term.

I have no doubt Hillary Clinton will rally behind Obama and I will be very anxious to see the comments here when she asks her very loyal supporters to join her. It's almost like they expect her to be a sore loser and just go away...that won't be the case. What will they say to Hillary's call to not throw away their votes?

If it happens, true Obama supporters will welcome the true Hillary supporters with open arms. Of course, there will be trolls posing as both groups trying to stir up trouble and they should be ignored.

That said, I think it is a big IF at this point.

I don't entirely disagree that she wouldn't be a half-decent VP. On that we can agree. I'm not sure it wouldn't be somewhat of a dysfunctional, arranged polygamist marriage, though.

Truth? She should be given the Attorney General nod. Prosecuting those in power over the past 8 years would not only be more fulfilling than a Veep spot, she would probably be the most effective human being possible in that position. And Republicans now sitting in the West Wing would be very, very nervous.

it just not fair he's the presumtive nominee and hillary is calling all the shots all through out this race if he were a white man this crap would not be going on rules are rules she agreed that fl and mi would not count and when she saw she was losing she starting crying she wanted to see both states seated. as for mich you can win against you self .. she played mind games on every body about popular votes etc stick with the rules dnc says the delagate count is 2025 the first to get it is the winner not 2210 yes those states should be seated but those votes do not count because they all agreed not only obama, john edward, dodd the other that were running also took their name off and she left her name on and did not campgain in those states. i'm a woman but i believe in doing what is right and i'm sick and tired of her controlling tthe show i'm tired of hearing the swan song

Sounds like some Obama supporters are doing the "crying."

"Why, oh why won't Hillary just go away" is one perspective.

Why, oh why don't 49.9% of the Democrats drink the Barry-flavored Kool-Aid is another.

If Obama and company are going to talk about uniting the country, they can start by uniting the party. Demanding Hillary get lost -- and having done that expecting to pick up all her supporters -- is simply offensive, and at best naive.

Hillary has wayyyy to much baggage to be viable in a general election either as Prez or VP. If she somehow finagles her way on, I will turn into an anti-abortion activist.

Since Hillary will lose tonight after the Oregon primary, can we then ask Hillary to do the right thing and concede? If the roles were reversed, Obama would have conceded a long time ago and thrown his support behind Hillary.

Also your assumption that all Hillary supporters will oppose Obama is pure bunk. I know a lot of people who voted for Hillary who will be just as happy to vote for Obama. Some voted for Hillary because she is a woman, some because they thought she was the best candidate. But none of them think Obama is unqualified and none of them would even consider voting for McCain or not voting at all. I think the people I know are representative of most of the Hillary supporters out there.

But, if you don't want to vote for "Barry", that's your problem. And if you don't, you will have to live with the consequences of your actions.

Golly, look what you did there! You started out saying Obama's supporters are crying for her to get out, and a few sentences later, you say "Obama and company" are "demanding Hillary get lost."

As I'm sure you're aware, Obama has never called for Hillary to concede. In fact he has repeatedly said she should stay in as long as she likes. And she should. He's already moved on to McCain regardless.

One wonders what you would be left with if you gave up the lazy lie of lumping Obama and all Obama supporters into one giant mouthpiece.

When is someone going to say - NO, you have NOT won more votes; more people have gone out to vote for Obama than you, you power hungry egomaniac.

The only reason Hillary is in Kentucky is because she likes whiskey.

Also, when she was little, her dad taught her how to kill a rattlesnake with tobacco spit when they went duck hunting together, right before they went cross burning with local church people in Louisville, which is where Hillary is originally from.
