WASHINGTON — Barack Obama will reach a significant milestone Tuesday as he marches toward the Democratic nomination for president _ a majority of pledged delegates at stake in all the primaries and caucuses.

Obama will still be short of the overall number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination, unless he were to suddenly receive an avalanche of endorsements from the party and elected officials known as superdelegates. But the Illinois senator's campaign is touting the delegate milestone as a big step in defeating his rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"A clear majority of elected delegates will send an unmistakable message _ the people have spoken, and they are ready for change," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in a memo to supporters Monday.

"As we near victory in one contest, the next challenge is already heating up," Plouffe wrote. "President Bush and Senator McCain have begun coordinating their attacks on Barack Obama in an effort to extend their failed policies for a third term."

Obama picked up the endorsement of Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia Monday, less than a week after Clinton overwhelmingly won the state's primary. Byrd is the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate.

Obama has led in pledged delegates since he won the first caucuses in Iowa on Jan. 3. The two candidates stayed close through Super Tuesday, when Democrats voted in 22 states and American Samoa. Obama won 13 more delegates than Clinton that day _ out of nearly 1,700 at stake.

Obama built an imposing lead the following two weeks, winning 11 straight contests in states such as Louisiana, Maryland, Washington and Virginia. He led by 161 pledged delegates on Feb. 19, after victories in Wisconsin and Hawaii. The lead has been relatively unchanged ever since as the candidates spent the past three months trading victories.

Obama goes into Tuesday's contests with 1,610.5 pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses. He needs 17 more to reach a majority of the 3,253 pledged delegates available. Clinton has 1,443.5 pledged delegates, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press.

Story continues below

Clinton's campaign played down the significance of the milestone, accusing Obama of declaring victory without reaching the required number of overall delegates.

"Premature victory laps and false declarations of victory are unwarranted. Declaring 'mission accomplished' does not make it so," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said in a memo to supporters.

Obama has a total of 1,915 delegates overall, including endorsements from superdelegates. Clinton has 1,721, according to the latest AP count.

Obama is a little more than 100 delegates short of the 2,026 needed to clinch the nomination. He cannot make up that ground in the Kentucky and Oregon primaries because of the proportional way in which Democrats award delegates. The two states have a total of 103 delegates at stake Tuesday.

But winning a majority of pledged delegates could help his case with undecided superdelegates, who are free to support whomever they choose at the party's national convention in August. Obama argues that superdelegates should support the candidate who wins the most delegates in the primaries and caucuses. Otherwise, he says, they would be overturning the will of the voters.

Obama, who overtook Clinton in superdelegate endorsements a little more than a week ago, picked up six more Monday. Clinton added none.

Clinton argues that superdelegates should exercise independent judgment.

Her campaign is also trying to change the math by getting the delegates seated from the Michigan and Florida primaries. Clinton won both primaries, but the states had been stripped of their delegates for violating party rules by holding their primaries before Feb. 5.

The Democratic National Committee's rules panel is scheduled to address the issue May 31. If any of the delegates are reinstated, it would increase the number needed to clinch the nomination.

Perhaps Wolfson should follow his own advice in saying, "Declaring 'mission accomplished' doesn't make it so". I.e. declaring Hillary still has a chance doesn't make it so.

Just posted in, and found the impermissible statement, "Hillary won both primaries" in Michigan and
Florida. Just rememberin'; NO-ONE ELSE CAMPAIGNED IN THOSE STATES. Obama's folks actually followed the afore-mentioned rules...and acted like honorable people. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you. Show some respect. Florida & Michigan CHOSE not to count. Now they want to play?

Not entirely true. Obama took his name off the Michigan ballot for 2 reasons. One was that he didn't want to offend Iowa and New Hampshire(a political calculation) and the other was that he was going to get beaten badly in Michigan. I'm not saying count the votes, but at least know the facts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:57 AM on 05/20/2008

Every other candidate - Edwards, Richardson, etc, etc - not just Obama - removed their names from the MI ballot because they were following the rules that everyone had agreed to - this includes HRC who even made a public statement that MI and FL votes (hence, delegates) WOULD NOT count. You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about as far as Obama is concerned. Learn the facts of what really happened. All the candidates knew the ruling and signed off on it.

These are not facts. These are opinions. You have no clue what reasons Obama used for taking his name off the ballot. Nor do you know why EVERYONE ELSE but Hillary took their names off the ballot. Do you know the reason why Hillary left her name on the ballot? Of course not. Please stop making up stories and claiming them as facts.

If you gave us facts we'd listen. To say he'd have been beaten in MI is your OPINION - not a fact.

Doubtful that he would have been beaten.

Clinton running as the only candidate only got 55%. Hardly the sort of numbers the only person on the ballot should get. It was well known in Michigan that the vote didn't count and that only Clinton votes would be counted. Some election.

Clinton signed an agreement that the delegates wouldn't count. She now seems to have foorgotten that.
She has vetoed new delegate selections, she wanted her original vote with no one else getting any votes. I actually think Michigan and Florida should have the right to have delegates seated when they follow the rules. They can have another election or caucus if they prefer.

This is wonderful. Now we just have to wait 8 months, and then Barack will get Mitch McConnell, Joe Lieberman and John Boehner into a room and tell them stories from the South Side, informing them that we are the ones we've been waiting for. When faced with this inspirational unifier, the Republicans will take a hard look at their politics of division They'll see that it works. And when the knives come out, Barack will turn the other cheek. Because 'the fierce urgency of now' means ackowledging, y'know, Holy Joe is a person too.

If Obama really stood for anything, he'd fight with moral imperative. Right now he's just another politician trying to be all things to all people -- he just says it better than the rest.

By the way, this is all hypothetical. He has to beat Mondale first. But feel good about yourselves, Democrats. Picking the kid who backs down from a street fight makes you better, smarter, more enlightened. But the bullies stick around until you hit harder.

I'd say he beat Bush and McCain like a drum over the Knesset speech. I don't see the man backing down from anything.

His moral imperative is certainly much more powerful and clear than Clinton's. She can't make up her mind if she's for gun control (a position she's espoused for 20 years) or if she's Annie Oakley (which she just discovered this year on the campaign trail).

Tomorrow, Obama will secure the majority of pledged delegates. Any Super D that endorses Hillary, with this milestone reached, will be attempting to overturn the will of the voters.

What this all comes down to for me, and for millions who voted for Obama, is this:

How a person runs his/her campaign is a reflection of what kind of chief executive he will be, and after all, the President of the United States IS the chief executive.

On that score, he far outshines Hillary Clinton or John McCain.

Choice of personnel, sound strategies, relevant mission statement, calm demeanor, not panicking in the face of crisis, never changing persona or focus, astonishing grass roots campaign that raised a record amount of money from an unprecedented amount of people......those are qualities that make this voter reassured that HE will be the most qualified to answer that phone call at 3am.

And I will be confident he will choose a better running mate than Al Gore did.

Amen, brother. Too many people look at one person and one person only . . . the candidate. But it's not just about the candidate; it's about the organization and how well it organizes and mobilizes the people. Barack"s team is far superior to the team Hillary put together. Also, Hillary's team's approach was old style; Obama's team kicked it up a notch and employed tactics that utilized the power of the Internet far better. He's got the organization folks . . . and it shows!

I've been looking at Obama's use of the word 'unity' and the exact opposite happening with what his supporters do and say. I don't know how he does it but he says one thing and the opposite happens. There was a Seinfeld episode where George kept doing the opposite of what he would normally do and it worked. Sound familiar. Keep reading the Obama comments if you don't believe me.

I found it interesting that tonight on FOX news that Dick Morris is questionably a supporter of McCain. For the last many months, Mr. Morris has attacked Hillary Clinton.

Now. . .being a FOX news contributor. . .he is attacking Barack Obama.

I ask voters to think about this turn around. What a joke Mr. Morris is in changing his attacks in order to stay on FOX news. . .an "unbiased" news network.

Shame on you, Mr. Morris!!!!!!!!!
