If there ever is a person born a man and unaltered from being a man becomes pregnant, that will be "a pregnant man". This is different and too hard to convey in a headline so the media just throws out "pregnant man" cause this person is got elements of both and wants to be a man in most respects.

I'm all for having people define themselves and not letting society do it for them. I also know that as much as I would like to fly, I don't have wings so I can't call myself a bird. Would I be a bird if I was a man with wings?

This is really a false analogy: every human brain starts out with the capacity to develop into either a 'male' or 'female' one, it's dependent on certain developmental triggers which usually, more or less, match one's gross physical biology, but don't always. When they don't, this can turn out to be a really uncomfortable experience for a transgendered person, for which changing the body provides some relief and a chance at a whole life:

It's not like wishing you were a penguin or something, it's more like if you, reader, took your sense of the sex and gender you are right now, and suddenly found yourself with the wrong sort of body, but kept your present instincts and self-image: all joking aside, you'd want to get that situation rectified pretty quickly, too.

If you start out presuming that transpeople are crazy, or sexually-deviant, then that's all you'll see in it. But having known quite a few, trust me, no one goes through that on a whim.

one thing I find amazing... all the right wing religious conservatives, who constantly trumpet the need for procreation, and profess the sanctity of life, should have no reason to comment about this.
This PERSON is doing exactly what they consider normal - the choice to bring a child into the world and care for it.

The press are not stupid they are smart because they know that controversy sells. Even though they know this is a woman artificially changed into a man they continually refer to her as a man just to sell their newspapers. And since a lot of people are so dumb and easy to fool they continue to sell this story.

I too consider myself an open-minded person, but this is too freaky looking and disturbing to me. If she wanted to have a baby, why didn't she have one while she was a woman, then have the surgery?

As open minded as I am, this is distubing...The hormones can't be good for the child.
How the hell do you explain to the child the situation of it's existance. I wonder if the kid will be traumatized!

He stopped taking the hormones and that's why he was able to get pregnant. This baby will most likely be healthy and the couple said they will take on the traditional roles. So he will be the daddy and the woman will be the mother. I guess there are many different ways these days of bringing a child into the world, right?

Look, I'm straight and I know we straights think in terms of genitals but these people seem kind and loving. I'd rather see them with a baby then some single mother with dead beat B/F's hanging around their kids doing drugs or worse. Some children live in a war zone. At least this kid will be loved.

He's got to have been off the hormones a while even to get pregnant, and probably can't have been on them too long, either. I've known a number of transmen, and still, this would be considered a pretty weird move by most.

Though the story is pretty simple, a transman marries an infertile woman who really wants a kid, and decides to basically back off on transition for a while. The media circus about it is....probably unfortunate for acceptance of transgendered people in society, but it's all a pretty understandable motivation.

Children really aren't confused by sex changes unless someone *confuses* them, or lies to them, say, by saying they don't or aren't supposed to happen. If the adults around aren't conflicted or confused or distressed by it, neither are they. If the kid ends up traumatized, it would be by people who are bigoted toward them or their parents.
