We should be growing HEMP for bio-fuel- it grows like a weed and needs no chemicals and you can grow several crops a year.And for paper and fabric.

And why is it that marijuana's illegal when it has no known side effects, and it has never killed anyone?
It has been studied for many years and most of the people who have studied it , even though they were paid by the government, have testified saying it should be legal. So why isn't it?

Its not because the FDA cares about people because if I see one more add for a drug that the side affect is - DEATH- WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE ?

i like the increased use of the word cannabis. the word "marijuana" was invented in the 1930's anti-cannabis propaganda era to bring about racist associations with Hispanics.

I can't believe that I'd be sayin' this after all these years, but marijuana is STILL not legal. It's not the drug that keeps it illegal, those who profit from its illegality do. The major drug companies and all the money moochers in between. I've seen people die of violence and accidents while under the influence of alcohol. Never have seen anyone beat their spouse, kids, kill behind the wheel, or create all the other problems associated with alcohol use

It's all right to get drunk out of your mind because it's legal, but you can't smoke some pot because it's illegal? What a crock. It's time we legalized pot.

Marijuana is nature's (or God's if you're the religious type) gift to humankind. So many benefits, no ill effects. It was initially made illegal as part of William Randolph Hearst's drive to demonize Hispanics and African-Americans; it remains illegal today simply because it would put most of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry out of business. While the government continues to claim there are no medical benefits to pot, the FDA recently approved a giant pharmaceutical company's plan to manufacture a drug for cancer sufferers whose active ingredient will be THC, the active ingredient in.... pot. So it only has a use if corporations can make billions off it, not if you grow it yourself. The pinnacle of hypocrisy.

And industrial hemp is much more cost effective than traditional paper mills and much less harmful to the environment. One can also manufacture clothing from industrial hemp. The reason it's not being used industrially is nothing more than a result of neoconservative fear, not to mention all the dollars the government would lose from the timber industry.

The medication is called Sativex, it is being prescribed in England and Canada. Sativex is pure cannabis extract used in a tincture you spray under your tongue.

This is right down the street from where I work. There was a piece in the SF Chron on the guy who started this; he is quadrilegic or partially paralyzed and he is a poster child for the need for medical marijuana. He's a great guy here in Oakland and well-respected. If he says it's a good thing, I don't doubt it.
