CLEVELAND — The Memorial Day weekend guest list at Sen. John McCain's Arizona retreat runs to at least three Republicans mentioned as potential vice presidential running mates, but a top aide said Wednesday that vetting possible veeps is not on the agenda.

"It's purely social," said Mark Salter, a senior adviser to McCain.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a McCain rival in the primary, were invited to a weekend gathering at the senator's place in Sedona.

They were among the estimated two dozen people _ including some 10 couples _ invited. McCain often hosts friends and political acquaintances at his compound.

The Republican nominee-in-waiting said more than a month ago that he was in the "embryonic stages" of selecting a running mate for the fall campaign, but neither he nor aides have disclosed additional information in the weeks since.

It will be the first visit to Sedona, Ariz., for all three.

Romney dropped out of the race in February after it became apparent it would be near impossible to topple McCain in the convention delegate race. He endorsed McCain a week later and pledged to help him win the nomination.

Since then, McCain has praised Romney repeatedly as someone who is certain to continue playing a large role in the GOP. Romney, for his part, has suggested that he'd accept a vice presidential slot, though some Republicans privately speculate that he's looking ahead to a possible repeat run in 2012.

Crist, 51, provided a major boost to McCain before Florida's Jan. 29 primary with a well-timed endorsement.

Elected governor in 2006, he has been seen as a moderate Republican. He has championed efforts to curb climate change, and former President Clinton praised him for his efforts to restore voting rights of felons who have completed their sentences. Crist also pushed for a law that requires a paper trail in state elections.

Jindal, 36, son of Indian immigrants, was elected governor of Louisiana in October 2007, three years after being elected to the House, where he was credited with playing an important role as his state recovered from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Previously, he was secretary of Louisiana's health department, and an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Jindal's spokeswoman, Melissa Sellers, downplayed the visit and did not mention the vice presidential search. She said the governor and his wife were going to Arizona to "spend time" with McCain and his wife, Cindy, and noted that that two lawmakers have met several times before.

Among other guests expected were Sens. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., close confidantes of McCain.

I've often wondered if Huckabee stayed in the campaign for as long as he did just in case McBush keeled over.

Now I'm wondering if Romney is supporting the ol' guy for the same reason.

Jindal has only been Gov. for a second. He promised to "FIX" Louisiana and hasn't really done anything.

Keep your promise to Louisiana Jindal or I can see the Rethugs losing LA come November from a bunch of bitter abandoned people in LA!!!!

Sorta sounds like the empty suit O-bama who has only been in the senate for about a MINUTE. He's done absolutely nothing for Illinois or the country...you can rant and rave about Jindal but you ignore O-bama who has done nothing himself...gee what a forked tongue statement ...

You OBVIOUSLY have NO CLUE how desperately the people of Louisiana need his leadership. We need someone to fast track us from the bottom of every bad list in the country....

worst in education, worst in corruption, worst in pollution, worst natrual disaster etc... you name it we are the worst at it.

Bobby got elected because he was going to help now he's considering another job.

I love this picture of McCain! I think all Democrats should have it blown up and printed and placed on yard signs and stuck in their yards.

It's so Strangelovean.

I seriously wonder if any rising star in the Republican party would accept a VP slot. Crist and Jindal fall into that category. As for Mr. Flip Flop Romney, he sure has been sucking up to McCain since he dropped out, but, Romney is Mormon and there are evangelicals like Hagee and Parsley, to name two, and Falwell followers who think Mormonism is a cult, a la FDSM. Both Romney and McCain ran badly in the Deep South.

He might as well choose Lieberman, since Joe Judas' career is dead anyhow. They can be mutual sacrificial lambs.

Do not be surprised to see the name Jeb Bu$h. McCain has just begun to sell out. LIEberman was a clue.

Given the other Bush's record and approval rating, that would be really stupid. McCain just might do it.

After Larry Craig, the Repubs aren't about to pick a closet case like Crist for a high level national position.

Its going to be someone that is going to agree with McCain with less conflict and Fmr Gov George Pataki of New York could even pull the tri-state. Mitt Romney would of drilled in ANWAR and Huckabee might be unnecessary because the south is sowed up for the GOP.

As a New Orleans area resident, if Bobby Jindal goes for VP I'm gonna be pissed. Not because I like Jindal, because I don't, but because we're only just now starting to get back on our feet and the last thing we need is another absentee elected official. I'm so sick and tired of these golden boy Republicans staying in office here for a whopping ten minutes and then moving out and up.

He didn't even finish a full term as congressman, either. The special election to replace him was last week.

Bobby Jindal is the GOP future

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:34 PM on 05/21/2008

Jindal represents a dead end by representing the social conservative wing of the GOP. He is a regional candidate who will have no appeal outside of the South. The snake handlers are incapable of winning any elections outside of Dixie. Santorum is a good example. The Revival Tent Republicans, as represented by its hero GWBush, is going to go down in history as what ripped the last remnants of the Reagana coalition apart.

Bobby Jindal is, in effect, the last dinosaur left on the planet.

He won't be accepted as a VP choice for McCain. If a hypothetical President McCain keels over Jindal will become president with less experience than Obama or Harry Truman, the least experienced President in modern history. Jindal looks like a good matchup in for a cosmetic comparison, but that won't float. It's gonna be Romney, and Obama will eat him alive.

I don't think he will be the VP pick either. On a national level he is unknown. The republicans realize how important he is in LA and how that state needs to clean up their "governmental" house.

We lived in Long Beach, MS while stationed in Gulfport. Sold our duplex 3 months before the hurricane hit. It was 2 blocks from the beach. It was.

Wishing you well in New Orleans.

Remember, the Repukes are going to go racial big-time in the general election. The Rove slime machine cannot tar and feather Obama if they have a brown-skinned ex-Hindu on the ticket. The righties would stay home in droves and sulk for 4 years.
