WASHINGTON — Likely Democratic nominee Barack Obama has begun a top-secret search for a running mate, fresh signs that the general election campaign is well under way and the primary race against Hillary Rodham Clinton is basically over.

Obama has asked former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson to begin vetting potential vice presidential picks, Democratic officials said Thursday. Johnson did the same job for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984.

Obama refused to acknowledge Johnson's role when The Associated Press asked the Illinois senator about it in the Captiol Thursday.

"I haven't hired him. He's not on retainer. I'm not paying him any money. He is a friend of mine. I know him," Obama said. "I am not commenting on vice presidential matters because I have not won this nomination."

The Democratic officials spoke on a condition of anonymity about a process that the campaign wants to keep quiet.

Vice presidential searches are usually closely held secrets, but Obama campaign officials say the effort is being handled by a particularly tight circle of advisers.

The campaign did not want to discuss the effort because they are still engaged in a fading primary campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton, with three primaries left in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana. The voting ends June 3. Obama has repeatedly declined to discuss possible running mates while the primary is ongoing.

"We're not commenting about this process," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

But they are taking behind-the-scenes steps to move toward the general election campaign, with just 61 delegates needed to clinch the nomination according to the latest Associated Press count. Obama has 1,965 delegates to Clinton's 1,780, with 2,026 required to secure the party's nod under Democratic National Committee rules.

The Obama campaign is rapidly adding to its campaign staff, both at the headquarters and in general election swing states. Obama has been traveling to some of those battlegrounds _ Missouri, Michigan, Iowa and Florida in the last nine days _ while the campaign is registering voters across the country for the November vote. And top Obama organizer Paul Tewes is in discussions to take over the Democratic National Committee.

It's all part of an effort to lay the groundwork for an aggressive kickoff to a general election campaign. Republican John McCain has a head start and has been building his effort for several months since the GOP primary race wrapped up in early March.

McCain is hosting at least three Republicans mentioned as potential vice presidential running mates at his Sedona, Ariz., home this weekend _ Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. A top aide said it's a social event with more than two dozen guests not meant for veep vetting.

Obama's campaign refused to talk about who was being considered, but some in the party are calling for him to pick Clinton. Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said Thursday, "There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign about Senator Clinton being the V.P."

Other possible options are governors such as Arizona's Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Tim Kaine of Virginia; foreign policy experts like former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd or Delaware Sen. Joe Biden; or other senators such as Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Virginia's Jim Webb.

He could look outside the party to people such as war critic and Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel or independent New York mayor Mike Bloomberg. Or he could look to one of his early prominent supporters such as former Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota or 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards. Or he could try to bring on a Clinton supporter like Indiana's Evan Bayh.

Johnson's role running the veep process was first reported on TheAtlantic.com.

Mr Webb would be a fantastic VP choice and I would thoroughly enjoy watching him in the VP debates but I think he would be much more effective right where he is. Similarly with Mrs Clinton. She would be much more valuable to the Democratic Party staying in New York.

I think Edwards would be a great choice and having him on the ticket polls well (though I don't hold that in much esteem, it can be seen as a good indicator).

Hillary Clinton can probably give Obama: Florida and Ohio.

No she can't.

She probably couldn't even give HERSELF Florida and Ohio.

The baggage Clinton brings is too much. Having her on the ticket is like chaining yourself to a 5 ton iron ball.

Someone please tell me WHY, WHY, WHY is Hillary Clinton even considered?

Hillary must be considered.

Recall Glen Close in the movie, Fatal Attraction?" "I will not be ignored!"

You get my drift, right? LoL!

It's political politesse, nothing more.

She's the opposite of what Obama wants and needs in a running mate.

Political Correctness.
But Barack dont do political correctness. He only does what is right.
And Hillary in his view is wrong for America.

What's so "Top Secret" about it? Just about anybody that pays any attention could come up witha short list of ~10 people and have at least half of those people on the "Top Secret" search's list as well.

Any List is going to have to (at least initially) include:

Senator Clinton (whether I like it or not - she should be on the intial list)
Senator Webb
General Clark
Senator Biden
Gov. Sebelius (KS)
Gov. Strickland (OH)
Gov. Bredesen (TN)
Gov. Rendell (PA)
Gov. Schweitzer (MT - a bit outside of the box - but I love this guy)
Gov. Richardson (a better choice for Sec. of State to my mind)
Fmr. Senator Edwards (a better choice for AG to my mind)

And several others could be picked depending on what aspects of Obama's percieved weaknesses they wanted to try and shore up. My first choice would likely be Clark, closely followed by Webb and Sebelius

I say no to Hillary. She brings anger to the party. We need a clear mind that will not cut the throats of people they dont agree with. But will sit and listen and possible find if it make sense a mending of the thoughts on which ever issue.

I agree about Clinton thetiger - but she should still be on the initial list.

She is just not (to my mind) the best choice to get Obama elected this fall.

Clarke is a weak VP choice. He is not on the list and with good reason.

Apparenlty on this point we differ in opinon BeyondG&E.

He brings good foreign policy credentials, he has the military background that Obama is lacking, he is from an area (OK/AR) that could be swung Democrat (maybe), and he is smart and generally eloquent.

As an ardent Clinton supporter, he also throws a bone in the direction of Hillary's camp as far as getting one of 'her' supporters on the ticket without actually having to add Senator Clinton.

These are the reasons he should at least be on the vetting list. Others on the list would bring some of the same plusses - so he may not be 'the' best choice out there for Obama.

Wesley Clark was on MSNBC last week; intensely arguing that Hillary Clinton still could (and should) win the nomination. Not accepting reality - that should disqualify him.

I just hope that, among all the strategic criteria (having to do with electoral-geography, demographic appeal, "absolute trust" etc.), one priority be at the top of the list -

Would be best suited to step in as President should this be necessary.

Hillary for Clinton Library Custodian.

Hagel is a hard-right conservative and a poor choice.

Edwards is a legal advocate, not a jurist, and he isn't qualified at this time for the Supreme Court.

Hillary is under-qualified for that position, although she does know the boss, but she doesn't sleep with him.

I am sorry, I have to refer to race and gender - but in this case, it does matter: There's a high probability, that Sen. Obama will pick a white woman for the position of Vice-President.

Why? Because he MUST find a decent way to appeal to all the foaming "hillary chicks" out there, who are all threatening to abandon the DNC-bandwagon in the upcoming election - while avoiding to overload the bandwagon with "the real McCoy". Sen. Clinton as VP? No freaking way.

Therefore: I suppose, President Obama's VP will be an experienced, white woman.

(Oh, how I HATE to write something like that! But it's NECCESSARY!)

Those same foaming "hillary chicks" will be in an uproar over why Obama did not choose Hillary. If they all thought she could be President, why doesn't Obama think she is good enough to be VP? that is what they will all ask.

I shall say this to all those people threatening to vote for McCain. If you really do believe the economy is just fine the way it is,Iran needs to be attacked,There has to be long term millitary combat engagement in Iraq, then we dont need their votes any way as they wont be getting any of those from Obama.

This isnt about moving in the white house.this is about doing what is right. We shall not bend-over should the GOP say we will vote Obama so long as he promise to attack Iran, not reinstate habeas corpus, etc.

We dont need people who reason like that.

I agree but even in this beginning era of bipartisanship, we cannot afford to lose our Democratic soul in the interest of "working together". The only time Republicans wanna hear about bipartisanship is when they lose their power. Stay sharp, Dems!

3) Wesley Clark
4) Bill Richardson

And the long-shots: Arlen Specter and Chuck Hagel
