WASHINGTON — Likely Democratic nominee Barack Obama has begun a top-secret search for a running mate, fresh signs that the general election campaign is well under way and the primary race against Hillary Rodham Clinton is basically over.

Obama has asked former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson to begin vetting potential vice presidential picks, Democratic officials said Thursday. Johnson did the same job for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984.

Obama refused to acknowledge Johnson's role when The Associated Press asked the Illinois senator about it in the Captiol Thursday.

"I haven't hired him. He's not on retainer. I'm not paying him any money. He is a friend of mine. I know him," Obama said. "I am not commenting on vice presidential matters because I have not won this nomination."

The Democratic officials spoke on a condition of anonymity about a process that the campaign wants to keep quiet.

Vice presidential searches are usually closely held secrets, but Obama campaign officials say the effort is being handled by a particularly tight circle of advisers.

The campaign did not want to discuss the effort because they are still engaged in a fading primary campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton, with three primaries left in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana. The voting ends June 3. Obama has repeatedly declined to discuss possible running mates while the primary is ongoing.

"We're not commenting about this process," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

But they are taking behind-the-scenes steps to move toward the general election campaign, with just 61 delegates needed to clinch the nomination according to the latest Associated Press count. Obama has 1,965 delegates to Clinton's 1,780, with 2,026 required to secure the party's nod under Democratic National Committee rules.

The Obama campaign is rapidly adding to its campaign staff, both at the headquarters and in general election swing states. Obama has been traveling to some of those battlegrounds _ Missouri, Michigan, Iowa and Florida in the last nine days _ while the campaign is registering voters across the country for the November vote. And top Obama organizer Paul Tewes is in discussions to take over the Democratic National Committee.

It's all part of an effort to lay the groundwork for an aggressive kickoff to a general election campaign. Republican John McCain has a head start and has been building his effort for several months since the GOP primary race wrapped up in early March.

McCain is hosting at least three Republicans mentioned as potential vice presidential running mates at his Sedona, Ariz., home this weekend _ Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. A top aide said it's a social event with more than two dozen guests not meant for veep vetting.

Obama's campaign refused to talk about who was being considered, but some in the party are calling for him to pick Clinton. Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said Thursday, "There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign about Senator Clinton being the V.P."

Other possible options are governors such as Arizona's Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Tim Kaine of Virginia; foreign policy experts like former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd or Delaware Sen. Joe Biden; or other senators such as Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Virginia's Jim Webb.

He could look outside the party to people such as war critic and Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel or independent New York mayor Mike Bloomberg. Or he could look to one of his early prominent supporters such as former Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota or 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards. Or he could try to bring on a Clinton supporter like Indiana's Evan Bayh.

Johnson's role running the veep process was first reported on TheAtlantic.com.

That's right. Please pick one, like NOW, before Billary tries to blackmail the DNC into seating Hillary as VP.

Webb is the most likely choice. Obama and Web’s views seem to complement each other very well. Plus they both know a thing or two about tough election runs. The republicans can’t match that.

The VP slot is all about bring in the vote. If Obama determines that his chances of winning Virginia's 13 electoral votes will be improved and if he thinks he needs those votes to win the election, he'll pick Webb.

Considering the electoral map, it is certainly possible. Kerry won 255 electoral votes. Obama will take those states and he needs an additional 15 electoral votes for the win. VA's 13 would certainly put him within striking distance. Then add New Mexico's 5 or Nevada's 4 or Colorado's 8 (most likely) and the deal is cinched, welcome to the White House, President Obama.

The one problem I have with Hagel as a VP is the message that will be sent to America that Democrats can only sniff the White House if we run alongside Republicans. Come on, Dems get your head in the game. Perception is reality!

I would argue it's a signal that Obama is serious about bipartisanship, like Lincoln. It would be a refreshing change to bring the best of both parties to the leadership of the country...

Hagel a decent guy, but he is very conservative. The war/foreign policy/diplomacy is the only areas of agreement with Obama. Webb has it all.

Yeah but the real difference between Dems and Repubs are their economic policies. A successful Obama Administration would almost assure the WH to Hagel. Would he then choose a Dem on his ticket? I've always been told that you dance with the one who brought you. He didn't get to Congress as a Democrat.

You can be serious about bipartisanship by just doing what's right for the country. Obama himself said "no party has a monopoly on wisdom." Bring Republicans to the table and compromise. Given Bush's lack of bipartisanship, it wouldn't take much to even appear to be a change from that old model.

Kansas only has 6 electoral votes. She might be a terrific lady, but she won't add enough to the electoral map.

Obama Hagel is a winning combination, and a thought provoking one. Obama Webb won't upset me either.

Obama Clinton? Seriously, if this happens, once Obama is president he'll have two worries not related to governing:

1) keeping Hillary from whacking him like she did Vince Foster
2) keeping Bill Cliinton's hands and worse off of Michele.

Who needs that?

jeffp26: "....2) keeping Bill Cliinton's hands and worse off of Michele"

I have to chuckle....I raised point #2 on another thread yesterday.
The general consensus is there would not be enough left of Bill if he put the moves on Michelle. And that's before Barack entered the picture.
That woman is close to 6 ft tall.
If her own husband acknowledge and respect her strength, Bill does not have a fighting chance.

Sam Nunn, just might be a good choice as well.

Obama Hagel this is the uniting ticket and consistent with Obama's message of uniting the country.

Absolutely not. If Obama were to die in office, we'd have a Republican president. Do you really want that?

I totally agree. Imagine the turmoil in the republican party if Obama crosses lines so early?

Phenomenal choice. Plus, obviously, Hagel is a bulldog.

Ideally I want Tim Kaine but politically it might be best to have Webb or the governor of Ohio Strickland.

At this point, I would love an Obama-Edwards combination. And after the past few days, while I had been thinking it would be cool if Clinton got a cabinet appointment, her behaviour makes me wonder the degree to which she is actually ready for public service, as harsh as that sounds. She is too Machiavellian for my tastes which is not strength but when combined with whining about who ELSE is responsible for her ongoing losses, is more a fundamental weakness.
